Huge Silver Haul Found On WWII Shipwreck

The SS Gairsoppa was carrying seven million ounces of silver when it was sunk during World War II. The 412-foot steel-hulled ship was torpedoed while in the service of the Military of War Transport.

On Monday, Odyssey Marine Exploration of Tampa, FL, announced it had confirmed the identity and location of the shipwreck site in the North Atlantic, about 300 miles off the coast of Ireland in international waters. It is the largest shipwreck ever found with precious metals on board.

In 2010, the UK Department for Transport awarded Odyssey Marine the exclusive salvage for the cargo of the ship through a competitive tender process.

Odyssey has begun the process of bringing up the find. Under the salvage agreement, Odyssey Marine will retain 80 percent of the net value of the silver bullion recovered.

Indiana UFO landing...looked like campfire

(Unedited) - I drove a Ford cargo van for an overnite delivery company in Indianapolis in 2006. My route had 50 stops and I drove the same route each night travelling about 400 miles each evening. As I was heading west from US 31 to the town of Culver on a two lane country road around 1:00 am when I came over the top of a hill and down the hill I witnessed something out of the ordinary. What was normally a farm field pasture littered with some implements and a few head of cattle, now appeared to have the orange glow of a campfire. I thought to myself, that is kind of unusual because it was quite some distance from any residence. As I approached the area, I rolled down the window of the van and stopped to see if this was a campfire or perhaps an accidental fire. My eye level was about the top of the wire fence and the weeds that had grown up along the fencerow. What I witnessed about twenty feet away gave me chills and caused me a great deal of anxiety. What I saw was a highly reflective dome just over the top of the weeds about 20'-35'in diameter reflecting the color of the night sky with just the faintest sliver of an outline that defined its shape. But the weirdest thing about it was, it was mimicking a fire, soft orange and reddish undulations were reflecting off its surface but even stranger were the spark embers that normally float off a fire, they were recreated in a pixel type format, very quick dashes of light that floated in a zigzag geometric pattern making sharp right angles in a multi-sized square track across the surface of the dome. The light even dimmed as to copy an ember burning out. It was semi-convincing in reproducing a campfire but it was not natural. When I saw that it scared me and I immediately drove off. I was so close to it that I thought if lingered there any longer who knows what might happen. - MUFON CMS

Piranhas attack around 100 beachgoers in Brazil

Authorities in a state in Brazil's northeast are scrambling to take the fright and the bite off the beach after piranhas sunk their teeth into about 100 beachgoers, UOL Noticias reported.

The problem -- rather fearsome given piranhas' horror-movie teeth and ability to sink them into human flesh -- has been the biggest at the main beach area in Piaui state; authorities said they need to act fast to reduce a piranha overpopulation situation.

Last weekend, at least 100 bathers were treated at the hospital in Jose de Freitas not far from Terezina, Piaui's capital, after being bitten on the heels or toes at the local beach.

"Since they have no predators, piranhas have started attacking people on the beach," said Romildo Mafra, a local environment official.

Environmental officials so far have added tilapia to the piranhas' local food chain hoping to quell some of the predators' hunger. - AFP

Glowing orbs over F.E. Warren AFB

Cheyenne, WY - 8/5/11: I observed five round brightly colored objects moving SW to me quietly at great speed. On August 5, 2011, at about 18:10 to 18:15 MDT, I was facing east (nearly 90 degrees true). I just happened to be looking for the Moon which I observed south (nearly 180 true), when I observed two objects approximately 3 degrees east of the Moon and the same south.They were moving at about a course of (nearly 15 true). The first seemed to be moving ahead a little faster and opening the distance between them that I adjudged to be several degrees at first. They appeared to have some color in the setting sun. I watched them as they continued to separate a little and then slowly veer to the east to a heading between 15 true and maybe 45 true. As they now moved away from me they appeared closer together, that is less separation.Shortly another object appeared from the same location, so I went to get binoculars. With the binoculars I could not resolve anything but a ball-like object. That is no wings. The third object had bright red markings and some black. The fourth object appeared out of the same location and followed the same path except these seemed not to veer off to the east as much. The forth object was a brilliant green, and could only be resolved to be round. The fifth object seemed to be as the first three; bright red with some markings. Since I had only a 45 degree field of view, blocked by a tree, my estimates of speed and altitudes are just that, estimates. Speed I adjudge to be greater that Mach 1. I first thought greater than 500 nm. Altitude I adjudge to have been greater than 50,000 ft. There was no sonic boom. There was no sound of propulsion system. NOTE: The above image is a rendering. I received the following anecdote from Will, a longtime resident of northern New Hampshire:

Hello - I enjoy reading your daily newsletter. I thought I'd write to you about an experience I had back in 1991. I enjoy photographing the outdoors and try to get out at least once during each season. It was the Fall of the year and I had seen several moose along the Pontook Reservoir and the Androscoggin River, so I decided to try and get a few photographs.

I parked off of Berlin Rd and walked into the woods east of the dam. I walked about 1000 feet or so. It was very dense and the light was low so I decided to get closer to the lake where I could pick up some better light. As I turned north I heard a cracking sound behind me. I turned to see what it was but saw nothing so I started to walk toward the area where the sound came from. I hadn't walked far when I saw something tall and thin dart from behind a sugar maple tree and quickly disappear. I stood for a minute and again this thing came from behind a large maple tree and then vanished again. I tried to get a photograph but the darn thing was fast and nothing every showed up on the shot. It didn't show itself anymore that day.

I went back to the location a couple more times but never witnessed this thing again. There are a lot of legends my father would tell us as kids but I really never gave it much thought. Some of the people around here used to talk about wood devils in the White Mountains but I've never heard about anybody seeing one or anything similar to what I saw.

The thing was about 7 foot tall, dark thick fur or hair and thin. Much thinner than a normal man at that height. Like I said it was very fast and nimble. I never heard a sound other than the footsteps it made when moving.

That's really all I have to say on this. I've seen many unusual things in my 76 years but this thing was the strangest. What do you think I saw? Will W.

Some of the old men would talk about things called "wood devils" that live in the woods. There apparently were a lot more of these creatures back in the 1930's than there are now.

These Wood Devils were tall and very skinny. They are gray colored and very hairy. I guess that people saw them mostly when they didn't expect to. They stay in the deep woods. They can move very fast. When a person walked through the woods he would nearly walk into one before he spotted it. They hide by standing upright and still against a tree. As a person approaches it, the creature will stand against the opposite side of the tree. As the person passes it will move so that the tree is always between the person and the tree. If it cannot hide it will still stay perfectly still until it knows the person sees it. They make awful screams. They have a semi human shape, but their faces don't look at all human. I have never seen one, but the people who said they did were regular churchgoers and would strap their kids for lying. I don't think they would carry on discussions of things they made up.

Wood devils (Eastern United States NA): A major part of Appalacian folklore, wood devils are tall, skinny humanoids with an almost "stick-man" appearence, due to their gracile build. Are considered hostile by the locals, and are much feared. Possibly a modern descendant of the gracile Au stralopithecines, or perhaps a race of the other eastern hominid.

Karl Shuker explained: According to the settlers inhabiting Coos County in New Hampshire, the deep woodlands of this New England state harboured elusive, fleet-footed beings known as wood devils. Although superficially humanoid in appearance, they were very tall, hairy, and thin, with grey skin. They were able to emit piercing screams, and their faces were not those of humans at all. Occasionally, a human would unexpectedly encounter one of these mysterious man-beasts, but if a wood devil became aware of a human's approach, it would conceal itself by standing upright and perfectly still against a tree, moving slightly to one side if necessary in order to keep the tree's trunk between itself and the oncoming person. All of these details are consistent with modern-day reports of the bigfoot.

Argentina: Possible Meteor Strike Kills One; Destroys Homes

One woman died and six other people were injured as a result of the event. A local resident told Radio 10 that the explosion was caused by a flaming object that fell from the sky and completely destroyed a house and several cars. "It was a veritable earthquake," she said.

The event took place a few minutes before 2 a.m. in a property located at the intersection Luis Vernet and Los Andes streets in Monte Grande, municipality of Esteban Echeverria.

The causes of the explosion remain unknown, but local residents claim "a fireball fell from the sky."

There was an overpowering smell like gunpowder," recalled one of the people living in the area, in statements made to C5N. "There is no explanation for what took place," added Cayetano, another resident, to Radio 10. He then added: "A neighbor woman came out running because she could see a blue fireball falling from above."

Guillermo Perez, commander of the local fire brigade, remarked that the causes of the incident remain unknown, while acknowledging that the first story points to "an object that fell from the sky."

"I heard that version, but can't confirm it at first instance. It is necessary to go by an expert investigation to see what really happened," he told Radio 10. Perez confirmed that two houses and a business were "completely destroyed."

As a result of the event, an elderly woman trapped under the debris perished while another six were rescued. Firefighters told C5N that these were subsequently taken to a local hospital.

The fatality is among the victims living in the house where the explosion took place. Three of the injured are members of the household and the other three are from the adjacent house, affected by the explosion. The injured parties are out of danger, C5N explained.

According to neighbors, the explosion was even heard in such neighboring communities as Ezeiza and Temperley, to the south of Greater Buenos Aires.

UPDATE:

Information continues to come in on the possible meteor impact in Argentina. The following is from www.perfil.com:

[...] The Monte Grande explosion, which caused dozens of families in this Buenos Aires community to wake up, and caused a woman's death, was not caused by a gas cylinder explosion, as confirmed by initial investigations performed by the fire department.

"It was shown that there was no explosion resulting from a gas cylinder," stated Guillermo Pérez, the head of the fire department.

Only minutes before the explosion, a local resident took a photo of a burning object that fell from the night sky. The image shows a spherical object with a tail similar to that of a comet. Testimony by local residents suggests that this could be the "fireball" that they saw falling on the destroyed homes.

Meteor or something else?

I was driving home on highway 90 west from Lafayette La, to New Iberia, returning from my daughters baseball practice and like any 12 yr old, she was mad at me for no reason other than I'm her dad. All of a sudden she says "dad I just saw something very strange," and I could tell something had really startled her. I tried to act calm so she would tell me the details. She knows how I'm into anything going on in the sky, and she is a bit spooked by it. She told me she saw a yellow streak of light coming down like a meteor of sorts. When it came close to the ground it sort of disintegrated. For her to say this, it must have been really amazing.

I tried to get more out of her but I could tell she was alarmed and scared,and she is really embarrassed by my interest in this stuff.

I then stopped at the nearest gas station, got down and was looking for something to drink as I was approached by a man with a cane in his 60's who was sober as a Judge. He said, "did you see that thing in the sky,"?

He then explained what he saw which was similar to my daughters. I could tell he was amazed by it and wanted more of an explanation. He also thought it was more of a blueish color if I remember right. I was so shocked that he had witnessed it too. I think he sensed that I was sort of a UFO BUFF. It's almost like he knew I was. He said it looked like he saw 2 orbs when it disintegrated, which I then asked if he saw 3. He replied no.

I then brought him outside to talk with my daughter. I asked him if it was sort of like a fireball, and he said he didn't think so. But while my daughter downplayed it, I know she was alarmed and saw something very peculiar. The man validated it too. We were near an airport but, by their reaction, it was either a meteor, or a UFO. It did break up or as I said disintegrated and they were both very amazed and I could tell it was a once in a lifetime sight for the both of them. There is no doubt that something is going on in our sky's and I don't think it will be long before we REALLY find out.

A year or 2 ago, a good friend of mine saw something similar to this in the same area, and one of the local TV channels reported a meteor sighting at the beginning of the month.

800-year-old remains of witch discovered in Italian graveyard… with seven nails driven through her jaw

These are the 800 year old remains of what archaeologists believe was a witch from the Middle Ages after seven nails were found driven through her jaw bone.

The grim discovery was made during a dig on what is thought to be a 'witches graveyard' after another woman's skeleton was found surrounded by 17 dice - a game which women were forbidden from playing 800 years ago.

Experts say they believe the women are aged around 25 - 30 years old and were found buried in a simple shallow grave in the ground with no coffin or shroud.

The macabre remains were found during a dig close to the sea at Piombino near Lucca in Italy's Tuscany region and the woman had seven nails through her jaw as well as another 13 nails surrounding her skeleton.

Archaeologist Alfonso Forgione, from L'Aquila University, who is leading the dig, is convinced that the women were suspected witches because of the circumstances in which they were buried.

He said: 'It's a very unusual discovery and at the same time fascinating. I have never seen anything like this before. I'm convinced because of the nails found in the jaw and around the skeleton the woman was a witch.

'She was buried in bare earth, not in a coffin and she had no shroud around her either, intriguingly other nails were hammered around her to pin down her clothes.

'This indicates to me that it was an attempt to make sure the woman even though she was dead did not rise from the dead and unnerve the locals who were no doubt convinced she was a witch with evil powers.

'The second skeleton we have found was buried in a similar fashion but this time we found 17 dice around her - 17 is an unlucky number in Italy and also dice was a game that women were forbidden to play.

'The way the bodies were buried would seem to indicate some form of exorcist ritual and the remains will be examined to see if we can establish a cause of death for them.'

One puzzle that the archaeologists have been unable to explain is why the women if they were evil witches were buried in consecrated ground as the area is the site of an 800 year old church.

He said: 'The only possible explanation is that perhaps both women came from influential families and were not peasant class and so because of their class and connections were able to secure burial in consecrated Christian ground.'

The team is trying to find the burial place of the St Cerbonius, a bishop who died more than 1,500 years ago and who is the local patron saint of the area.

Pictures traditionally show him having his feet licked by a bear after legend has it the animal refused to eat him after he was condemned to death for sheltering Roman soldiers by the Barbarians who had invaded Tuscany.

French woman suing Opus Dei for years of alleged enslavement

A French woman is suing two followers of Opus Dei for enslavement , saying she was trapped for a decade working without pay at a school with ties to the powerful conservative Roman Catholic group.

Catherine Tissier said that, from the age of 14 until 27, she was forced to clean, wash and serve from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., including weekends, with no holidays or proper pay in establishments run by Opus Dei. She said she was forced to take vows of obedience, poverty and chastity and was cut off from the outside world. Now 40, she began a court action on Thursday on charges of "concealed work" and "payment contrary to dignity."

Defence lawyers insisted that the trial, believed to be the first of its kind in Europe, was a simple labour dispute, but lawyers for Tissier alleged that the enigmatic group's practices were physically and psychologically damaging to their client. Opus Dei looms large in the Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown's bestseller, where the group is depicted as a ruthless, even murderous sect bent on global power. It is a portrayal that the group, which in Latin means "Work of God," rejects.

In 1985, Tissier joined the Dosnon hotel school in eastern France and the adjoining Couvrelles château international meeting centre.

Officially, the school and centre are run by Acut, the University and Technical Culture Association. Tissier alleges that she discovered their link to Opus Dei only at the end of her first year.

One of the accused, Francis Baer, Acut's treasurer, acknowledged on Thursday that there was a link between his association and Opus Dei, but said it was limited to pastoral activities. Tissier alleged that its influence went far deeper. Chaperoned by what she calls a "spiritual director," she said she became a "numeracy assistant" for the group.

"I wasn't allowed to tell my parents I was in Opus Dei," she said.

"They had become the devil. When they tried to contact me, they were told, 'Your daughter is ours, she doesn't belong to you anymore, you can see her once a year.' "

She said she was sent to see a doctor, whom she said was an Opus Dei follower and who told her she was depressed and put her on heavy medication. At age 29, she weighed little more than 38 kilograms.

She alleged she was given high doses of an antipsychotic drug.

She said her parents rescued her from the organization in January 2001 and claimed that it took her two and half years to recover.

During her time at the institution, she said she received monthly wages, but was asked to sign blank cheques by her employers, who took the money back.

"At the end of 15 years, I had 10 euros in my account," she said, standing frail and stooped in a grey cardigan.

Agnes Duhail, the secretary of the château and the other accused, said Tissier "always did what she wanted. If she wanted to sign a blank cheque, she did it."

Tissier's claims were supported by four witnesses. "I feel guilty for having been exploited for several years," said one woman who claimed to have been forced to wash floors every day for no pay.

"The aim of Opus Dei was to be sanctified through work. We were pawns. We never had time for ourselves."

Baer said the meetings centre had passed a number of inspections.

Tissier first filed a lawsuit in 2001, accusing Opus Dei of "mental manipulation." The charges were later dismissed.

There could be no doubt: someone had broken into my flat. Three months after arriving in Russia as the Guardian's new Moscow bureau chief, I returned home late from a dinner party. Everything appeared normal. Children's clothes lying in the corridor, books piled horizontally in the living room, the comforting debris of family life. And then I saw it. The window of my son's bedroom was wide open...
It wasn't open when I left five hours earlier, taking my children, Ruskin, six, and Tilly, nine, with me. We lived on the 10th floor of one of Moscow's post-communist-era apartment blocks, an ugly, orange-brick tower in the Moscow suburb of Voikovskaya. We kept our windows shut. The danger of a child falling out was too obvious.

To open the window, you had to twist the white plastic handle downwards 90 degrees. This was possible only from the inside; it couldn't have blown open. But the window was open, almost provocatively, defiantly so.

"Has there been a burglar?" my son asked, peering down at the frozen courtyard below. "I don't know. Perhaps someone managed to climb up the outside. Maybe it was Spiderman," I said weakly.

In the spare room I discovered a tape hissing in a music player. I hadn't put it on and my wife Phoebe had spent the night away with friends. Several hours later, while trying to suppress a feeling of horror, alarm, incredulity, bafflement and a kind of cold rational rage, I woke up. An unknown alarm clock had gone off somewhere in the flat. I went into the living room and turned on the lights. A clock was beeping loudly. I hadn't set it. But someone else had – to go off at 4.10am. I looked at the date; it was Sunday 29 April 2007.

It was clear that this was no orthodox burglary. They had apparently entered through the front door – the locks didn't seem to have troubled them. Nothing had been stolen; nothing damaged. The intruders' apparent aim had been merely to demonstrate that they had been there, and presumably to show that they could come back. Planet-X, Comet Elenin, Nibiru...or What?

There's been 'a buzz' the past week over a video from the Mawson Australian Antarctic Station. I'm not going to guess as to the identity of the anomaly seen in the video...but there are many claiming that this is proof of the Planet-X or a doomsday comet. The claims, to this point, are that Comet Elenin is everything from an elaborate hoax, to a piloted alien spacecraft, to a stray neutron star, to Planet-X itself, and on and on. The speculation began when Laura Knight-Jadczyk posted Comet Elenin is Coming!. She discussed the theories of J.M. McCanney - Planet-X, Comets and Earth Changes - and his predictions of Earth changes due to alignments between the Earth, Comet Elenin and the Sun. At the same time there was increased speculation about an impending 'pole shift' and the consequences because of it.

I don't know what your thoughts are on this subject but I'm not buying into it just yet. NASA is saying 'nothing to see here, folks!' Not that I believe everything the space agency comments on...but in this instance, I think there needs to be time for a sanity check. Lon

Esoterica: From Beyond the Grave, Residual Hauntings and 19th Century Ghost Ships

Do loved ones bid farewell from beyond the grave?

Nina De Santo was about to close her New Jersey hair salon one winter's night when she saw him standing outside the shop's glass front door.

It was Michael. He was a soft-spoken customer who'd been going through a brutal patch in his life. His wife had divorced him after having an affair with his stepbrother, and he had lost custody of his boy and girl in the ensuing battle.

He was emotionally shattered, but De Santo had tried to help. She'd listened to his problems, given him pep talks, taken him out for drinks.

When De Santo opened the door that Saturday night, Michael was smiling.

"Nina, I can't stay long," he said, pausing in the doorway. "I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for everything."

They chatted a bit more before Michael left and De Santo went home. On Sunday she received a strange call from a salon employee. Michael's body had been found the previous morning -- at least nine hours before she talked to him at her shop. He had committed suicide.

If Michael was dead, who, or what, did she talk to that night?

"It was very bizarre," she said of the 2001 encounter. "I went through a period of disbelief. How can you tell someone that you saw this man, solid as ever, walk in and talk to you, but he's dead?"

Today, De Santo has a name for what happened that night: "crisis apparition." She stumbled onto the term while reading about paranormal activities after the incident. According to paranormal investigators, a crisis apparition is the spirit of a recently deceased person who visits someone they had a close emotional connection with, usually to say goodbye.

Reports of these eerie encounters are materializing in online discussion groups, books such as "Messages" -- which features stories of people making contact with loved ones lost on September 11 -- and local ghost hunting groups that have sprung up across the country amid a surge of interest in the paranormal.

Although such encounters are chilling, they can also be comforting, witnesses and paranormal investigators say. These encounters suggest the bond that exists between loved ones is not erased by death.

"We don't know what to do with these stories. Some people say that they are proof that there's life after death," said Steve Volk, author of Fringe-ology: How I Tried to Explain Away the Unexplainable-And Couldn't, a book on paranormal experiences such as telepathy, psychics and house hauntings.

Scientific research on crisis apparitions is scant, but theories abound.

One theory: A person in crisis -- someone who is critically ill or dying -- telepathically transmits an image of themselves to someone they have a close relationship with, but they're usually unaware they're sending a message.
Sometimes you just sense the presence of someone close to you, and it seemingly comes out of nowhere.

Others suggest crisis apparitions are guardian angels sent to comfort the grieving. Another theory says it's all a trick of the brain -- that people in mourning unconsciously produce apparitions to console themselves after losing a loved one.

A telepathic link between loved ones

Whatever the source for these apparitions, they often leave people shaken.

Nor are apparitions limited to visions. The spirit of a dead person can communicate with a loved one through something as subtle as the sudden whiff of a favorite perfume, Volk says.

"Sometimes you just sense the presence of someone close to you, and it seemingly comes out of nowhere," Volk said. "And afterward, you find out that person was in some kind of crisis at the time of the vision."

Many people who don't even believe in ghosts still experience a mini-version of a crisis-apparition encounter, paranormal investigators say.

Did you ever hear a story of a mother who somehow knows before anyone told her that something awful has happened to her child? Have you ever met a set of twins who seem to be able to read each other's minds?

People who are extremely close develop a virtual telepathic link that exists in, and beyond, this world, said Jeff Belanger, a journalist who collected ghost stories for his book, Our Haunted Lives: True Life Ghost Encounters.

"People have these experiences all the time," Belanger said. "There's an interconnectedness between people. Do you know how you're close to someone, and you just know they're sick or something is wrong?"

An eerie phone call at night

Simma Lieberman said she's experienced that ominous feeling and has never forgotten it -- though it took place more than 40 years ago.

Today, Lieberman is a workplace diversity consultant based in Albany, California. In the late 1960s though, she was a young woman in love.

Her boyfriend, Johnny, was a mellow hippie "who loved everybody," a guy so nice that friends called him a pushover, she said. She loved Johnny, and they purchased an apartment together and decided to marry.

Then one night, while Lieberman was at her mother's home in the Bronx, the phone rang and she answered. Johnny was on the line, sounding rushed and far away. Static crackled.

"I just want you to know that I love you, and I'll never be mean to anybody again," he said.

There was more static, and then the line went dead. Lieberman was left with just a dial tone.

She tried to call him back to no avail. When she awoke the next morning, an unsettled feeling came over her. She said it's hard to put into words, but she could no longer feel Johnny's presence.

Then she found out why.

"Several hours later, I got a call from his mother that he had been murdered the night before," she said.

Johnny was shot in the head as he sat in a car that night. Lieberman thinks Johnny somehow contacted her after his death -- a crisis apparition reaching out not through a vision or a whiff of perfume, but across telephone lines.

She's sorted through the alternatives over the years. Could he have called before or during his murder? Lieberman doesn't think so.

This was the era before cell phones. She said the murderer wasn't likely to let him use a pay phone, and he couldn't have called after he was shot because he died instantly.

Only years later, when she read an article about other static-filled calls people claimed to have received from beyond the grave, did it make sense, she said.

Johnny was calling to say goodbye.

"The whole thing was so bizarre," she said. "I could never understand it."

He had a 'whitish glow'

Josh Harris' experience baffled him as well. It involved his grandfather, Raymond Harris.

Josh was Raymond's first grandchild. They spent countless hours together fishing and doing yardwork in their hometown of Hackleburg, Alabama. You saw one, you saw the other.

Those days came to an end in 1997 when Raymond Harris was diagnosed with lung cancer. The doctors gave him weeks to live. Josh, 12 at the time, visited his grandfather's house one night to keep vigil as his "pa-pa" weakened, but his family ordered him to return home, about two miles away.

Josh said he was asleep on the couch in his home around 2 a.m. when he snapped awake. He looked up. His grandfather was standing over him.

"At first, it kind of took me by surprise," said Harris, a maintenance worker with a gravelly Southern accent. "I wondered why he was standing in the hallway and not in his house with everyone else."

His grandfather then spoke, Harris said.

"He just looked at me, smiled and said, 'Everything will be OK.' "

His grandfather then turned around and started walking toward the kitchen. Harris rose to follow but spun around when the phone rang. An aunt who was in another room answered.

"When I turned back around to look, he was gone," Harris said.

As if on cue, his aunt came out of the room crying, "Josh, your pa-pa is gone."

"No, he was just here," Harris told his aunt, insisting that his grandfather had just stopped by to say everything was OK. He said it took him a day to accept that his grandfather had died.

"Honestly, before that, I never believed in the paranormal," he said. "I thought it was all fake and made up. But I just woke up and I saw him. It couldn't be my mind playing a trick. He looked solid."

Fourteen years after his grandfather's death, there's another detail from that night that's still lodged in Harris' memory.

As he watched his grandfather walk to the kitchen, he said he noticed something unusual.

"It looked like there was a whitish glow around him."

I never believed in the paranormal ... but I just woke up and saw him.

'Can you come out and play?'

Childhood is supposed to be a time of innocence, a time when thoughts of death are far away. But crisis apparition stories aren't confined to adults and teens.

Donna Stewart was 6 years old and growing up in Coos Bay, Oregon. One of her best friends was Danny. One day, Danny had to go to the hospital to have his tonsils removed. Stewart played with him on the morning of the surgery before saying goodbye.

She said she was in her bedroom the next day when she looked up and saw Danny standing there. He wanted to know if she wanted to go out and play.

Stewart trotted to her mother's bedroom to ask her if she could play with Danny. Her mother froze.

"She went white," Stewart said. "She told me that wasn't possible."

Her mother broke the news. Danny had an allergic reaction during surgery and died, Stewart said.

"When I went back to my room, he was gone," she said.

Stewart, now an Oregon homemaker and a member of PSI of Oregon, a paranormal investigative team, said the encounter changed the way she looked at death.

"These experiences have made me believe that those we love are really not that far away at all and know when we are not doing as well as we could," she said. "Just as they did in life, they offer comfort during crisis.''

Still, Stewart often replays the encounter in her mind. She asks the same questions others who've had such encounters ask: Did my mind play tricks on me? Could he have been alive? Did it all really happen after he died?

De Santo, the former New Jersey hair salon owner, has taken the same self-inventory. The experience affected her so much she later joined the Eastern Pennsylvania Paranormal Society, which investigates the paranormal.

She said she checked with Michael's relatives and poured through a coroner's report to confirm the time of his death, which was put at Friday night -- almost 24 hours before she saw him at her salon on Saturday night.

She said Michael's body had been discovered by his cousin around 11 Saturday morning. Michael was slumped over his kitchen table, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

De Santo was baffled at first, but now she has a theory.

Michael started off as a customer, but she became his confidant. Once, after one of her pep talks, Michael told her, "You make me feel as if I can conquer the world."

Maybe Michael had to settle affairs in this world before he could move on to the next, De Santo said.

"A lot of times when a person dies tragically, there's a certain amount of guilt or turmoil," she said. "I don't think they leave this Earth. They stay here. I think he kind of felt he had unfinished business. He needed to say goodbye."

And so he did, she said. This is how she described their last conversation:

As they chatted face to face in the doorway of her shop, De Santo said they never touched, never even shook hands. But she didn't remember anything unusual about him -- no disembodied voice, no translucent body, no "I see dead people" vibe as in the movie "The Sixth Sense."

"I'm in a really good place now," she recalled him saying.

There were, however, two odd details she noticed at the time but couldn't put together until later, she said.

When she first opened the door to greet Michael, she said she felt an unsettling chill. Then she noticed his face -- it was grayish and pale.

And when she held the door open for him, he refused to come in. He just chatted before finally saying, "Thanks again, Nina."

Michael then smiled at her, turned and walked away into the winter's night. - CNN

Residual hauntings (maybe) explained

I am (or was) a restoration architect. Old buildings are my domain. Having been on a ghost hunt or two, I believe I have a plausible way to explain what are called "residual haunts" – events that play over and over, with no apparent reason for occurring in an endless loop that is mistaken for paranormal activity. Some of these are captured as EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) – sounds to faint for the human ear.

Many ghost hunters will tell you that an entity needs electricity to manifest. Then, residual activity has been described as like an audio or a film reel that just plays and plays. Well, let's look at that.

The basic components necessary for a simple tape recorder are an energy source, magnetic film, and small electromagnets. Tiny electromagnets add a magnetic flux, or charge, to the surface of the metal-coated tape as it slides over the electromagnets, which are iron cores wrapped in wire. An audio signal is sent through the wire, creating a magnetic field in the core that magnetizes the metal coating on the tape. During playback, the tape creates a magnetic field in the core and a signal in the coil is amplified through speakers.

Old buildings contain all of these items.

Before 1977, almost all paint contained lead. Thus, every surface of an old or historic structure, unless it has been gutted or abated, contains a thin metallic film on almost every surface except its floors. We have a film source to record on.

Iron was a staple material used in buildings for centuries. With the advent of basic electricity, many electrical circuit loops were grounded to something fixed and metallic – like iron – by wrapping the grounding wire around it. Thus, we have the core of an electromagnet.

Electricity can be achieved numerous ways. First, many historic homes still contain bare knob and tube wiring. It has been my experience that if you find knob and tube, there is often a good chance that you will find a charge in the bare wire. But even in buildings with no electricity, there can be a positive charge. Many old buildings have metal roofs, usually made of tin or an alloy called terne. The problem is, these materials can be mistaken for one another. If one then needs a repair made, a skylight trimmed, or a plumbing vent stack to penetrate the roof, craftsmen use a soft metal, like copper. Copper + tin + water = a chemical galvanic action that corrodes your roof material. It also forms a simple battery everytime it rains. Consider that most ghost hunters find that stormy, rainy nights are the best times to capture paranormal activity.

Simple microphones and speakers can be made from numerous objects, as the mode to transfer sound to or from the recording tape is essentially vibration. The explanation for many EVP might be that the "speaker" or delivery system for the recorded sound is unamplified and simple.

Essentially then, most buildings built prior to 1977 are, in effect, giant tape recorders. If the conditions were just right in the past, sounds of that age were recorded right onto the house, itself. When the conditions are just so in the present, the house plays back the sounds it recorded.

This is but one simple explanation. Assuming this to be correct, might it be possible for a structure to record a faint, "ghostly" image, as well? Theoretically, sure – every building also contains the rudiments of a glass lens, too. There are other similar scenarios involving certain rock formations and other materials that could be "recording" history, and playing it back as what we commonly refer to as residual paranormal activity. In no way does this explain "active" hauntings or other unexplained phenomenon.

It just shows how if something happens repeatedly, "Like a recording playing over and over," that just might be exactly what you are experiencing. - heraldparis

Mystery of lost 19th century ghost ships

It's been described as one of the greatest Victorian gothic horror stories of all time. Two ships with 129 men on board and fitted with the latest technology, vanish with barely a trace left behind. One hundred and sixty years of searching -- one attempt as recent as last month -- have failed to find "HMS Erebus" and her sister ship, the somewhat appropriately named "HMS Terror" -- the two vessels lost in the Arctic.

In 1845 British Royal Navy captain Sir John Franklin set out with some of the finest sailors of the time on a mission to map the Northwest Passage. Franklin's expedition wasn't the first to the region, but it is the most infamous.

"Why did this fail when all the others didn't," asks author William Battersby. "There was something jinxed about the expedition." Battersby is one of many to be transfixed by the mystery of Franklin's last voyage. "We love adventure stories, of derring-do, win against all odds, but in this story they don't and we still don't know why."

The environment of the Northwest Passage is unforgiving. The landscape is vast and deserted, comparable only to Jupiter's moons. The winters are unrelenting and bleak. Franklin's men were faced with particularly brutally harsh temperatures and blizzards when they reached the region.

Despite the ships being reinforced with steel and holding three years worth or provisions, it appears the environment got the better of the crew. "Man proposes, God disposes," says Bob Headland from the Scott Polar Research Institute, who regularly visits the region. '"And the ice gods are a fickle lot."

The disappearance of the Erebus and the Terror has prompted the longest search mission in history: Although there have been numerous attempts to find the ships, there has been no sign of them.

Ryan Harris from Parks Canada led the most recent mission to try to locate the shipwrecks. Last month, his crews spent hours scouring the ocean floor, searching waters up to 50 meters deep. "It's an incredible story. It's got shipwrecks, the remoteness of the Arctic, putting the might of English industrialism against Mother Nature," says Harris.

Since 1997 Parks Canada has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attempting to locate the "Erebus" and "Terror." The tale of the Franklin expedition has enthralled Canadians -- the wreckage has the dubious honor of being the only national historic site in Canada that hasn't been found yet.

"Once Franklin received his orders that sealed his fate," Harris explains. "In directing them south-west into ultimately the Victoria Strait it took them to the ice choke point. Once they fell into the clutch of that area, their fate was sealed. There's not much wildlife there and it is isolated."

The last known account of the "Erebus" and "Terror" came in 1848. A rock cairn with a message on it indicated that the harsh conditions had already claimed their first lives, with only 105 men left alive.

Franklin was one of the first casualties of his own expedition. That same year the men abandoned their ships, archaeologists believing they began making their way south in a desperate bid to find food.

However the harsh environment supported little, and with few animals to hunt and over 100 men to feed, the chance of survival was low. It's been suggested that the men may have resorted to cannibalism in their last-ditch efforts to survive. "There were far too many men to live off the environment. What man plans and what nature allows are two different things," says Headland.

Archaeologists have relied heavily upon oral Inuit history to try to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Based on their accounts it is thought some of the men lived for another three or four years after abandoning ship.

But questions remain over exactly what happened to them. In 160 years only two skeletons and three perfectly preserved bodies have been uncovered. It is likely diseases such as scurvy claimed many lives but Battersby believes it may have been the ships themselves that killed the sailors.

His theory is that the men succumbed to lead poisoning derived from the internal pipe system used to melt ice into drinking water. It's hoped the discovery of the ships will provide answers.

'"There's a charm to the story," acknowledges Harris. "By solving a mystery it takes the allure away." But having said that, Harris is determined the search will go on until the "Erebus" and the "Terror" are found. Parks Canada insists that their searches have not been futile and they'll continue to gather information to help with future efforts. "I hope we're the last," says Harris.

But after 160 years it's possible that this tale may be frozen in time forever. "These are the last of the ghost ships," says Battersby. "It is the world's biggest ghost story." - CNN

Crescent Hotel Says a Celebrity Ghost Discovered

Spirits from various places and various eras make up the "guest register" of those "guests who checked out but never left" what many consider America's most haunted hotel," the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa.

This five-story mountaintop spa resort each year seems to discover yet another one of those famous "guests" by name. This year it was dancing legend of the early to mid twentieth century, Irene Castle.

"We were thrilled to find out that Ms. Castle still visits the hotel as she did during her final years here as a resident of Eureka Springs (AR)," stated Bill Ott, marketing director of this Historic Hotel of America, "and it was only as we linked casual references of a young girl describing a paranormal encounter were we able to piece together that her encounter was with someone who once frequented our property."

Irene Castle and husband Vernon were the best-known ballroom dancers of the early twentieth century. They operated ballroom dancing clubs and would travel the country charging as much as a thousand dollars an hour for lessons. She appeared in a Broadway show and several movies. Her popularization of social dancing with her husband was portrayed in a movie starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire entitled "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle."

"It was after the death of her fourth husband when Irene moved to Eureka Springs in 1959 to be near her son from her third marriage," Ott explained. "She bought a house on a small parcel of land just blocks from the Crescent, a place she called Destiny Farm. She died in 1969 while living here in Eureka."

Ott said that locals have told him that it was her love of the social life in her latter years that brought her to the Crescent on numerous occasions. It is said of Irene that even in her sixties that she was still "trim, lovely and fashionable lady with nothing to do but embrace the social scene of Eureka Springs" for whom the Crescent was the epicenter.

"It was a family that vacations annually at the Crescent who were part of the encounter where links to Irene came to the fore," Ott said. "This story, which was recounted on a recent episode of the Biography's Channel My Ghost Story, takes place when the mother was giving her daughter a bath in their room and the young girl began talking as if she was having a conversation with someone.

"The young girl said there was a princess standing right behind her mother but the mother saw no one. The mother thought it was unusual because her daughter was using such words as pirouette, ballerina, tango, princess, castle and bob.

"It wasn't until the girl's father read about Irene Castle's connection to the Crescent on our hotel blog was he able to the puzzle pieces of that encounter together. He writes, 'the strange words my daughter had said that we had made note of began to make sense. The princess was someone in a costume. That princess did not live in a castle; she was Castle. Bob was a hairstyle popularized by Ms. Castle. Those dancing terms were words commonly used by a professional dancer. It was clear, my daughter had been talking to Irene Castle.'"

Ms. Castle is only one of many paranormal guests who have been named at the Crescent. "Two of the better-known nom de spirits are Michael, the Irish stonemason who fell to his death during construction of the hotel in the footprint of Room 218; and Theodora, the cancer patient who fumbles for her key outside Room 419," Ott noted.

Whether named or nameless the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa has become a haven for those wanting to encounter the shadow, the whisper, the tingling touch of someone, something who stealthily walks the halls of the hotel proper. Nightly ghost tours have been selling out for years. Crescent Hotel and Spa: Possibly America's Most Haunted Hotel

Ken Fugate and Carroll Heath are mediums.

No, not shirt size. They're clairvoyants. They talk to ghosts.

Specifically, the two communicate with the spirits that roam the halls of the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa, which is billed as America's "most haunted hotel," making it a dandy place to spend Halloween or any other dark and stormy night.

Fugate and Heath offer evening ghost tours of the hotel, which they prefer to say is "visited" rather than haunted. The hotel's ghosts are sensitive souls, the two men explain, and those from the Victorian era are particularly spooked by what they see today.

"In their time, women didn't even bare an ankle," Heath said. "They see female hotel guests in shorts and are shocked."

To understand the hotel's ghosts, you must understand the history of the Crescent, which stands on the highest hill overlooking Eureka Springs and is affectionately referred to as the "Grand Old Lady of the Ozarks."

When the Crescent opened in 1886, the local newspaper hailed it as "America's most luxurious resort hotel." For the next 15 years, the hotel was a destination for the country's carriage set. Ladies in long skirts, hats and veils and gentlemen in top hats enjoyed morning horseback rides, afternoon tea parties and evening dances with the in-house orchestra.

The Golden Age was short-lived. Because business was slow in the winter, Crescent College and Conservatory for Women opened in the hotel in 1908, but both the college and hotel closed in 1934 during the Depression.

The darkest hour came in 1937, when the hotel was purchased by Dr. Norman Baker, a flamboyant quack who dressed in lavender colors and claimed he could cure cancer with injections of a mixture that included glycerine, alcohol and a tea brewed from watermelon seeds and clover leaves. The hotel became the Baker Cancer Hospital, until the doctor's arrest in 1939. One investigator estimated Baker defrauded cancer patients out of $4 million and hastened their death.

The Crescent went through a series of owners, and restorations, over the next several decades until its present saviors, Marty and Elise Roenigk, purchased it in 1997. The Roenigks are antique lovers and historic preservationists from Connecticut, and the Crescent became their largest project.

They also bought the town's other historic hotel, the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, and recently added War Eagle Mill, a working, turn-of-the-century grist mill with shop and restaurant, to their collection.

In their first year, the Roenigks remodeled the top floor of the five-story Crescent for their own residence and began restoration of the hotel rooms, which was completed by 2003.

The Roenigks are not into ghosts, although Elise has noted that their old Irish setter, Jazz, refused to stay alone in the north penthouse, one of the hot spots for ghostly sightings. Marty has emphasized that the hotel's ghosts "have been at best friendly, at worst mischievous."

Which brings us to the hotel's ethereal residents, who have attracted the curious from all over the world, including shows like the Sci-Fi Channel's "Ghost Hunters," which used infrared photography to film a shadowy figure in a section of the hotel Baker used as a morgue. The invasion of the TV crews, with their equipment, terrified the ghosts, the clairvoyants said.

Five familiar spirits are said to be living in the Crescent: Michael was a red-haired, Irish stone mason who fell to his death when the Crescent was under construction in 1886. He landed in what today is Room 218, a popular spot for spirit seekers. There's also a nurse seen pushing a gurney after 11:30 p.m., when Baker removed the dead. A gentleman in a top hat usually leaves behind the smell of his cigar. A female student who either fell or was pushed over a railing has been seen re-creating her deadly plunge. Whiffs of perfume means Theodora, a matronly cancer patient, is near.

Fugate and Heath speak fondly of them all. Like Casper, these are friendly ghosts.

"Michael has a wonderful sense of humor," Heath said. In the summer, he'll turn up the heat in Room 218 to tease its residents; in the winter, they'll find the air conditioner on full blast. Occupants wake up to find the window and door wide open.

Like many of the other spirits, Heath said, Michael "doesn't realize he's out of body." Dead, that is.

"The cancer patients came here to be cured," Heath added. "They're still hanging around, waiting."

Fugate and Heath came to the Crescent from San Francisco in 1995, and bought a Victorian home near the hotel that once was owned by Dr. C.F. Ellis, who was the staff physician when the Crescent opened. When they got the contract to do the ghost tours, they wanted to open a headquarters in a hotel room that formerly was the doctor's office. When negotiations with the hotel bogged down, they sought help -- from Dr. Ellis, who they said is the cigar-smoking ghost in the stovepipe hat.

"He told us not to worry, it would work out," Fugate said. "The next day, they offered us the space."

The Crescent has 72 rooms in the hotel proper and I was in 319, one of the rooms that got a recent makeover. The room was spacious, with dark wood furniture, some antique and some reproduction. There was a flat-screen TV and a large combination shower and jetted tub for two in the bathroom.

A pair of French doors opened onto a veranda with a panoramic view of the wooded valley that holds the town of Eureka Springs. Below were the gardens that surround the hotel, and the red-tiled roof of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, which celebrates two Masses a week and attracts another sort of spiritual seeker.

Hotel spokesman Bill Ott said the busiest month is October, when the surrounding forest glows. "October usually lasts six weeks here -- we still have good color into November," he said.

Most guests like the hotel because of its rich history, Ott said. "The ghost tour is just a lagniappe -- a little something extra," he said.

The hotel is popular for weddings, and the grounds are landscaped for their parties. The hotel has a gourmet restaurant with crystal chandeliers and an extensive wine list, a cocktail lounge, an outdoor pool and the New Moon Spa. The glassed-in conservatory and gazebo have been restored to their Victorian elegance. As is the case in most century-old structures, something could always use a little updating.

"The creed we live by is, first, protect the irreplaceable," Ott said. "We run a hotel so we can keep this building going. There's been a couple of times when it was about to be razed, and the Roenigks don't want that, and we don't want to let it happen to them."

Most of the spooky "evidence" from the Crescent consists of shadowy images and orbs of light in videos or photos taken by guests and ghost hunters. They can be seen at www.eureka-springs-ghost.com, the site operated by Fugate and Heath, and at www.americasmosthauntedhotel.com.

The mediums said my room, 319, has had its share of reported sightings.

"A woman who stayed there saw the image of a man in the bathroom mirror and screamed," Heath said. "Then, she came out on the balcony about 10:30 that night and witnessed the girl falling over the railing. She took our tour and was so relieved to hear the stories. She said, 'Thank you, I thought I was losing my mind.'"

My three nights in Room 319 went by without incident. I did hear what sounded like a shuddering at the foot of my bed, but I'm pretty sure it was the window air conditioner. And while my room was directly below Theodora's, I couldn't be sure that the occasional sweet smell was, in fact, her matronly perfume.

In fact, the scariest thing about my entire stay was the creaky old hotel elevator, which appeared to be original equipment and had a mind of its own.

Since the newsletter and feed readers rarely come to the blog site those people do not use the advertising offerings that are posted there. In other words, they receive the posts by email or feed reader and are not subjected to the product advertisements that create revenue.

According to the person who administered the analytics, I am losing about $4400 each year in lost advertising revenue including other out-of-pocket expenses.

Though I do not want to stop the newsletter or charge a fee for this service, I am left with only one option...limit the amount of subscribers.

Those subscribers who are currently receiving the newsletter will continue to do so. I will continue to allow new subscriptions...but there will be an eventual cut-off point in order to maintain a maximum number of subscribers. UFO Seen From US Navy Ship

While in the US Navy in the summer of 1986, I was standing lookout aboard the USS Edenton ATS 1 (currently decommissioned). The lookout watch, stood outside on top the bridge of the ship, and was responsible for reporting all contacts seen both in the water and sky. It was around eleven p.m. one clear night at sea, located about fifty miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, NC.

During one of my scans of the night sky, out of know where, four red circular lights appeared. The lights where hundreds of yards apart from each other and formed a square. At first, I thought it was four separate air craft, such as, military helicopters because the lights were stationary; however, due to the distance from the ship, the lights where too large to be aircraft running lights.

There were also no other normal running lights like green and white, which make-up the normal outline of an aircraft seen at night. The lights where located about twenty degrees above the horizon and about a mile away from the ship. Again, these four red lights were each about the size of a small plane, which were very bright and visible in the night sky. The night sky was also clear, moon lit, and a moderate amount of stars were visible, which also aided in calculating the distance and size of these lights.

As stated, when I first saw these lights they were all stationary in the sky and appeared out of know where. Once I noticed that these were not normal lights, grouped in a square and not moving, I called down to the bridge over a salt and pepper line informing the conning officer of a possible UFO sighting. This brought laughter across the wire at first, but I relayed the contact again in a stern but excited voice, which succeeded in getting the bridge officers attention. After relaying the contact information a second time, the four lights, in a flash, darted towards the horizon amazingly fast. The lower two lights in the square went first, with the top two lights following directly behind them in a curved swooshing motion and there was no sound.

Then all four shot straight up into outer-space and out of sight, all within a split second. At this point, I felt very excited and shocked, and was personally praying someone on the bridge had seen what I just saw. Having been an avid watcher of the night sky, seen shooting stars and a believer in that life has to exist somewhere out there, I become even more excited because I knew, I just saw my first unidentified flying object(s).

To my amazement, when I returned to the bridge after my watch, I was very pleased to learn that the conning officer and everyone else on the bridge had seen this sighting and logged it into the ship's log as a UFO sighting.

Next, after a half hour had passed since the sighting, the radiation detection system (gamma roentgen meter) on the bridge started making a loud clicking sound. At first, no one seemed to know what was making this sound then a very loud bell went off notifying us as to what was going on, we were being radiated.

When the instrument stopped clicking, it indicated we had taken a hit of 385 roentgens in the period of about one minute. At this point, the captain of the ship was awoken and called to the bridge, as well as the chief in charge of the radiation metering equipment onboard ship.

The captain was not impressed with an entry of a UFO sighting being placed in the ship's log, and at first, took the roentgen meter as being defective. However, the chief informed the captain that the meter had been serviced and calibrated the day before and that other like meters throughout the ship had just gone off indicating the same amount of roentgens received as the bridge.

The captain stated not to log the instance concerning the radiation exposure and left the bridge. During the rest of my watch duty that night, no officer or enlisted person spoke of what happened, and also acted liked nothing happened. This experience, however, was etched into my memory as if it happened yesterday and I have told this story to only a few people, people who I thought would believe me. This is also the first time I have documented the events of this night.

In conclusion, as an indication of the strength of gamma radiation, I and others received that night; all the personnel during the Project Trinity experiments conducted in 1945 at ground zero, only received between 1 and 6 total roentgens of gamma radiation. This leads me to believe, we traveled through the wake of radiation produced by the UFOs seen thirty minutes earlier. - MUFON CMS

Large 'V' Shaped UFO Encounter With US Navy Nuclear Submarine

A sailor reports about the UFO sighting he had while in the Navy. "I was assigned to USS Memphis (SSN-698), Homeport - Titusville, FL. (Cape Canaveral.) Our mission was Special Assignments which meant we protected the Space Program. We would go to sea and patrol while the shuttle was on the pad. Nine years ago, on October 24 and 25, my ship was on patrol about 150 miles of the Florida coast. We were cruising at about 500 feet when the submarine started experiencing electronics problems. The ship was malfunctioning, our tanks were blowing out of control, we were losing navigation ability and the communications area was totally lost. We went to all stop and tried to access what was happening. The controls in the reactor area started to malfunction. This presented a serious danger to our safety, so the captain ordered us to shut down the reactor, surface and go to diesel motors. When the ship surfaced I went to my watch station. The ship was still experiencing electronic difficulties but the mechanical devices such as diesel engines, cook stoves, and turbines were fine. It was raining and the entire sky was red like a red neon sign. I saw a large inverted V-shaped UFO off the port side. The executive officer told me to stand fast and he would speak to the captain. In a minute, the captain appeared on the tower and asked me for a distance to the craft. The laser range finder determined the closest point was 200 meters and the farthest point was 1,000 meters off the port. The UFO was not perpendicular to our ship but at about a 45' angle. This huge vessel was over a half mile across. The UFO made a half circle around our ship then passed across the stern causing our electronics systems to go crazy. We had permanent damage in communications and the sonar room. As the craft flew over the stern, I could see the rain stop under its red glow. The water seemed to rise almost a foot as the UFO passed over silently. When the UFO finished its swing across the stern it paused - the sky got brighter red and it simply moved off at tremendous speed inside 15 seconds. When the UFO left our boat returned to normal with the exception of the radio and sonar. We did a quick system check and the captain ordered us to return to reactor power and get underway.

The captain took two petty officers, the executive officer, and myself into the wardroom. He told us to not spread any rumors until we had a chance to talk to Commander Submarine Fleet - Atlantic. We reached port in about 7 hours where I was taken into "protective custody." Two enlisted men and myself agreed we had witnessed a real UFO. I was the one who shot it with a laser range finder so I was the only one that had its exact sizes. I shot that vessel as it hovered and I got solid readings not spotty like I would on debris. We were in holding for about three hours when an officer from the Air Force arrived and gave us a line of bull about an exploding weather satellite. The Navy then transferred virtually everyone on the crew to new assignments. This included the her captain, the executive officer and the entire crew. They were split up which almost never happens unless one of them gets a promotion or a new command, neither of which happened. The military just split up a 4 year team. Squid invade California coast

The ocean off Orange County has become alive with two- to three-foot squid, to the delight of anglers who don't mind being squirted with water and ink, and of landing operators who had been enduring a slow period of sportfishing.

Boats from Long Beach to Dana Point began targeting Humboldt, or jumbo squid after an image surfaced last week showing hundreds of the deep-water denizens washed ashore at Blacks Beach in San Diego County. (Hundreds more washed ashore Thursday at San Clemente.)

Humboldt squid, which can measure 7 feet and weigh more than 100 pounds, appear off Southern California every four or five years, spurred by a warm current or some other anomaly. Their historic range was off South America, but for years they've been entrenched in the Sea of Cortez off Mexico.

Recent invasions off California and even beyond, off the Pacific Northwest, caused scientists to become concerned that the voracious squid, which could be harmful to other fisheries, are expanding their territory to include West Coast waters.

Strandings of squid on beaches have historically preceded infestations in localized areas, and it's apparent that such an infestation is occurring off Orange County. This might have something to do with a considerable decrease in blue whale sightings in the same areas during the past two days.

The crew of the Freedom out of Davey's Locker in Newport Beach reported the capture of 1,300 squid on Thursday night alone.

Blacksbeachsquid Anglers aboard the Sum Fun out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing had trouble locating the squid, which typically inhabit depths of 650-3,000 feet, until about 9:45 p.m.

"Then all of a sudden they just attacked the boat," said Donna Kalez, who manages the landing. "They bit for 45 minutes and the anglers caught over 400 squid."

While Humboldt squid are easier to locate at night, by using bright lights to lure them upward, anglers aboard day boats have been getting them, too.

There are even reports that fishermen off the Dana Point breakwater have seen squid chase game fish as they're being reeled in.

Kalez said the last time squid were off Orange County they stayed for three weeks, allowing anglers to load up on calamari steaks.

She's billing her nighttime trips, which cost $25, as family-friendly. After all, what kid wouldn't appreciate a creature with slithering arms and tentacles, capable of squirting ink the width of a boat?

As for crew members who have to clean the boat, they might be of a different opinion. - petethomasoutdoors

Boy attacked by bizarre 'clawed man'

A 15-year-old boy was scratched in a bizarre 'claw' attack as he walked to school.

The attack happened in an alleyway in Quedgeley off Church Drive at around 7.55am on Tuesday, September 20.

The boy, a pupil at Severn Vale school, reported that he was walking towards School Lane when he turned around and saw a man lash out with his hand and use an unknown implement to inflict five scratch marks on his right cheek.

The offender lashed out again and scratched the boy's forearm before the boy managed to run away.

The offender is described as white, between 50 and 60 years old, 6ft to 6ft 4ins tall and with grey hair.

Patrols are being increased in the area as a result of the incident and police are urging anyone with information to call the new non-emergency number 101, quoting incident 161 of September 20.

Severn Vale School headteacher Peter Rowland said: "I was shocked to hear his report, and was happy to liaise closely and quickly with the local police and repeat the warnings about stranger danger we regularly give our students. It's a highly unusual situation which we must take most seriously." - thisisgloucestershire

Croc turns orange

Owner Tracey Sandstrom, who runs Roaming Reptiles, In Victoria, Australia, said Snappy the crocodile made a meal out of the filter in his water tank. "I think it caused the pH levels in his water to soar which has led to the change in colour."

She was stunned when her prized pet turned bright orange. "Snappy's pretty territorial and he attacked the filter one day and a few weeks after that, I noticed he was orange," she said.

The 2.5m croc stays warm at night in his heated indoor tank before moving outside through his "croc flap" to bask in sunshine by day. "It doesn't seem to have affected him at all. He's still got a healthy appetite, he is normally aggro and doing everything he always does," Ms Sandstrom said.

Darwin croc expert Grahame Webb examined the photos and confirmed Snappy was a picture of health.

Obama's Denver Visit Creates Conspiracy Speculation

A disturbing report prepared by General Alexey Maslov, the Senior Military Representative of the Permanent Mission of Russia to NATO, states that he has been notified by the Americans of their plan to hold a DEFCON 1 "Cocked Pistol" maximum readiness alert drill on 27 September which will be overseen by President Obama at one the United States most secure bunkers located beneath the Denver International Airport.

Under the SALT I Strategic Nuclear Arms Control Agreement signed between Russia and the US, both parties are required to notify the other in all cases of such maximum readiness drills occurring, but are not required to state their reasons for doing so.

General Maslov states in his report, though, his concern over this drill is "heightened" due to last months nuclear attack on the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) branch of the intercontinental military tunnel complex between Washington D.C. and Denver, and which we reported on in our 24 August report Russia Reports Nuclear Explosions Hit Vast US Military Tunnel Network.

Important to note is that shortly after the devastating attacks on American on 11 September 2001, the Bush regime moved to completely militarize the CIA by placing as its Director former US Air Force General Michael Hayden who served in that capacity until February, 2009 when Obama then put in place the former US Army intelligence officer Leon Panetta to run this most powerful of spy agencies. After Panetta, Obama put Americas top general David Petraeus in charge of the CIA barely a week after the aforementioned nuclear attack upon it.

The fears of both the Bush and Obama regimes regarding the CIA were due to their complicity in the 11 September 2001 attacks upon America utilizing their al Qaeda terror network headed by their main asset Osama bin Laden, otherwise known by his code name of "Tim Osman," that was run jointly with Pakistan's Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and funded by the Saudi royal family.

Important to note is that Russian intelligence services were long aware of the CIA-ISI "Tim Osman" operation after it had been infiltrated by top FSB agent Viktor Bout who delivered to Marvin Bush, President George Bush's younger brother, and Wirt Walker III, George Bush's cousin the approximately 15 tonnes of Russian military PVV-5A Plastic Explosive plastic explosives used to bring down the World Trade Center buildings.

In our 1 September 2010 report US-Russia Bidding War For 9/11 "Merchant Of Death" Reaches $20 Billion we detailed this sordid plot and, in part, stated:

"Important to note about Marvin Bush and Wirt Walker III is that at the time of the 9/11 attacks they were both directors of the American security company named Stratesec (formally known as Securacom) which was given a $8.3 million contract to help provide security at the World Trade Center and which the weekend prior to the attacks completely closed this massive skyscraper complex for 36 hours to "upgrade" its security system.

Now Bout in being curious, to say the least, as to why the Bush Family needed so much Russian explosives for their "upgrade" of the World Trade Center complex was "invited" by Marvin Bush to come to New York City to watch "the big show", an offer Bout did not refuse. And so the night prior to 9/11 Bout traveled to New York City where he was met by Bush "operatives" working for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), who "coincidentally" had scheduled an emergency exercise for the morning of September 11, 2001 that all too soon became real.

Bout was given a FEMA security pass that gave him unhindered access to the aftermath of the catastrophic attacks upon the World Trade Center complex which these reports document he took full advantage of. Unfortunately for the Americans though was that Bout's "visit" wearing his FEMA "credentials" was filmed by FEMA's official videographer Kurt Sonnenfeld, who was the only film maker given unrestricted access to the 9/11 site."

The "main conduit" for Saudi Arabian cash used to finance the "Tim Osman" operation was identified by Bout in his FSB reports as being Abdulaziz al-Hijji and his wife Anoud (a grand niece of Saudi King Abdullah ) who lived in Sarasota, Florida, and who just days prior to the 11 September 2011 attacks suddenly left all of their possessions and returned home. Though the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was quick to state that the Hijji's had no connection with the Saudi hijackers it is more than curious to note that nearly all of them were recorded visiting them in the days prior to the attacks.

The importance of noting the CIA-ISI-Saudi connection to the attacks upon America on 11 September 2001 with the Obama's planned 27 September "Cocked Pistol" alert is due to General Maslov warning in his report that this unprecedented drill occurring in Denver on that date could very well likely be related to threats made against the United States by both Saudi Arabia and Israel over the upcoming UN General Assembly vote to declare Palestinian statehood.

Where Israel commands vast resources within the United States to elect government officials, including Presidents, and who have fallen out of favor with Obama over his polices towards Israel, former Saudi ambassador to the United States, Prince Turki al-Faisal warned yesterday that unless the Obama regime voted for Palestinian statehood, "Saudi Arabia would no longer be able to cooperate with America in the same way it historically has" and the "chances of another war in the region" would be assured.

As we had warned about in our 28 May report Obama Vows War On Saudi Arabia, Orders Thousands Of US Troops To Region, and our 23 June report Nuclear Attack On US Warned Imminent As Saudi War Nears, the United States plans for all-out global war are well in place and are now awaiting the "spark" that will set it off.

To if the date of 27 September when Obama will be in Denver will be the date this "spark" is set off it is not in our knowing. What is in our knowing, though, is that since the CIA transferred their headquarters to Denver in 2005 under the mysterious airport [second photo right] with bizarre murals depicting [3rd and 4th photos right] picturing mass global death, particularly between Israelis and Palestinians, the questions as to who, or what, actually controls the United States today remains in question.

And when this information is coupled with the fact that 27 September is one of the most significant dates in American history because on that date, in 1777, after British troops captured Philadelphia, Lancaster, Pennsylvania became the United States capitol for that single day, the first time such a thing occurred in all of that nations history, and it is, also, the date that Comet Elenin enters into its feared alignment with the Earth, Sun and Moon with many believing these conjunctions are responsible for catastrophic earthquakes and tsunamis, and nearly all of NASA's top officials and scientists will be in Denver on that date too, one can be justifiably perplexed as to the many meanings these events have.

But, to the greater meaning of all of these things it has been best stated by Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, who warned the American people about the future to come:

"Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the U.S., in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it."

The Varginha Alien Entity Incident

In 1996 in Varginha, Brazil, during the course of several weeks at least two and perhaps as many as six alien creatures were captured or killed and turned over to American authorities, and a UFO may have crashed. Eyewitnesses described the creatures as humanoid and 3 to 4 feet tall. They had dark brown, hairless skin, big triangular heads with three short "horns" on top, and huge red eyes that were vertically oval.

On January 20, Military forces captured two extraterrestrial creatures still alive in Brazil. The capture occurred in neighboring areas of city of Varginha, State of Minas Gerais, Central Brazil. The fact is to be considered one of the most significant ever registered in this country and in the entire world. Military authorities are keeping secret all details of the operation, but some information has already leaked to the UFO community due to the investigative job of Dr., Ubiraja Franco Rodrigues and Vitorio Paccaccini who lives nearby and recognized as serious and dedicated researchers.

On the afternoon of January 20, about 3.30 PM local time, 3 young girls named Liliane, Valquiria and Katia observed a strange creature in a field of small bushes a few blocks from where they live. It was Saturday and they were coming back from their jobs when, crossing an empty area their attention was attracted by a strange being a few meters away. The ET was kneeling and looked like it was hurt, suffering some sort of pain. No UFO was ever seen. The girls observed it for a few minutes and run away, afraid that they had just encountered the devil....

The three girls were extensively interrogated by above mentioned researchers, leaving no doubt whatsoever about what happened. Very simple kids, they described the ET's as being a dark brown creature, with a small body of 4 - 5 feet in height, no hair at all, big brown head, small neck. It also seemed to have some greasy, dark oil on its skin. A strange odor was noticed by the mother of the girls, when she went to the site. The head of the creature had 2 big red eyes, no pupils, very small mouth and nose and - what is interesting - 3 protuberances in the head. The girls described such protuberances as horns.

Following the leads, researcher Rodrigues and Pacaccini started making inquiries everywhere in the town of Varginha, in order to know if anybody else had seen the same creature. They found several other people who also observed the ET's in the same location and maybe other ET's in different locations. While conducting their own investigations, both discovered that different witnesses has seen army trucks and other military vehicle and personnel that very morning of that day, a few blocks from the place the girls saw the ET's.

In trying to find out what the military were doing, Rodrigues and Pacaccini came to meet a few soldiers and sergeants. One of them decided to talk secretly about their mission, in a confidential taped interview. This Sergeant confirmed that, about 9:00 AM, January 20. the Fire Department of Varginha was required to capture a strange animal in the area. When four fireman arrived in a truck in the place, they noticed that it was not any strange animal at all, and reported the fact to the Army Sergeant School Commander in neighboring city of Tres Coracoes (about 10 miles east of Varginha)

Army truck was sent to the place and both forces captured the creature using nets and equipment regularly used to capture wild animals. The ET was placed till alive in a box that was then covered by resistant fabric. The box was placed on top of the truck, the vehicle headed to the Army Sergeant School and all personnel involved was ordered not to talk about it with anyone else "It was a Secret Operation" told them the lieutenant-colonel Wanderley, who commanded the operation. After such unusual, confidential report a few other military decided to come forward and speak about the captures as long as their identities were totally kept secret. They all confirmed, on taped interviews, that a second creature (possibly the same one seen by the girls that afternoon) was captured on the night of January 20, by personnel from the Army and the Fire Department. Details of such operation is fully known. This creature identical to the first one, was taken to the Regional General Hospital of Varginha that same night, stayed there for a few hours and then was transferred to a better equipped facility, the Humanitas Hospital.

A few nurses and personnel from Regional General Hospital had confirmed some facts and they were all suppressed. Individuals who had contacts with the second creature were advised to avoid press and UFO Researchers and not to talk about it with anyone, not ever their families or relations. AT the Humanities Hospital the second creature was kept at least for 2 days and on the second night on January 22nd a huge military operation took place to remove the creature already dead.

Interviews with some of the military who participated in this new operation, removing the creature from the Humanitas Hospital, declared that 3 Army trucks were used, each one driven by 2 different soldiers. It is believed that 3 trucks were used to remove only one body in order to avoid the soldiers to know in which truck would it be transported. The drivers and their follows couldn't see the details of the operations, as they were kept outside the hospital area. Military personnel from the Army Internal Intelligence (called "S-2" in Brazil and extremely violent and repressive) were responsible for getting the corpse from the interior of the hospital, placing it in a box and then in one of the trucks.

All 3 trucks then were taken to a military facility in Campinas, State of Sao Paulo, about 200 miles from Varginha, in the middle of the night. There, the corpse was removed to the University of Campinas , one of the best institutions in the country. It is believed - and we already have detailed information to be soon released that the ET body was autopsied by Dr. Badan Palhares, worldwide acclaimed as one of the best professionals in that area alive (he was the one who autopsied German Nazi Mengele, about ten years ago) Palhares, as well as any other authority involved, denied he was involved in any such operations.

UFO researchers from all over the country have been helping closely Rodrigues and Pacaccini, in order to discover each and every detail of the capture of the two ET's, Media in Brazil has never been so active and great majority of population believes that the case is real and that the military and civil authorities involved are keeping the facts secret. Many strange facts are happening simultaneously, such as prison of soldiers, Sergeants being transferred at short notice etc. The phones of many UFO researchers involved in the case are confirmed to be tapped and a few threats have been made anonymously.

Up to now, almost all details of the whole operation are known to the UFO researchers and a few can already been released. In a matter of weeks, all information will be fully disclosed by the UFO researchers involved, throughout the UFO Magazine, to the entire world.

Everyday new pieces of this fantastic puzzle are being received by researchers in many cities and more and more military personnel have agreed to talk. VARGINHA REVELATIONS

The Varginha Case is, without any doubt, the most important case in Brazilian ufology and, possibly, worldwide. It started with the testifying of three girls that had a sighting, but already has reached proportions beyond this. Associated to this case, UFOs over the south region of Minas Gerais State, became more constant since a few days ago. We have conclusive witnesses evidence of sightings in four different towns, apart from each other about 80 Km. One of the witnesses is the Mayor of Monsenhor Paulo. Because of these happenings, people from the region stayed alert and interested in everything that occurred.

From them, we had the opportunity to contact Fire Corps representatives and also Military Police in Varginha, and from Escola de Sargento das Armas (ESA = Sargeants Arms School) in Tres Coracoes, which increase the unnumbered details to the investigations, being possible to affirm with tranquility the truthfullness of the fact. It is extremely pleasant for me and for Ubirajara - ufologist who also commands the investigation - to be able to be involved in this research. We always read and heard talks about the cover up by the Arms forces, but it is something distant of what is happening in this case. We are here, living the facts and feeling on our skin all the cover up that is being done, all the counter-information that the Army's Secret Service and also Military Police are doing to disturb the investigations.

COMPLETE PROOF - We are feeling on our skins all the intimidation those authorities are exerting over the involved people in the operations and over the population. There are proofs that there exists an international intention to cover up the Varginha episode. This is not only a Brazilian authorities thing: we have the knowledge that, in other countries, this also occurs. But here it is in an extremely violent form. Even though we are fighting against those military forces - in the sense of taking the facts to the public -, what has been valuable so far were the contacts that we maintained with military people, which allowed us to find out how the captures of extraterrestrial beings occurred in Minas Gerais.

Liliane Fatima Silva, her sister Valquiria and Katia Andrade Xavier - the girls point to the spot where they saw the "terrifying creature".

It were those military people who, asking to be anonymous (and we guaranteeing them this {NT: they mean they would keep it secret}), informed us in detail how the Army took these creatures, who commanded and who were the involved people in this operation. We also found out who ordered everyone to shut up, what hospitals and hours in which the beings were in, et cetera. There are only missing now photographs and films of the fact, because, in what refers to Varginha, everything is practically uncovered. It is a great honor to take part in this research, because when I first knew the facts, in past January, the Centro de Investigacoes Civil de Objetos Aereos Nao Identificados (CICOANI- Unidentifyed Aerial Objects Investigation Civil Center), in Belo Horizonte, and we decided that it was necessary a detailed investigation. As I was raised in the south of Minas Gerais State, knowing well the region, I was indicated to support the research. As soon as I arrived, asking questions and collecting information to know the veracity of the fact, I had contact with a military witness, whose identity is still kept secret, and that was the beginning of everything.

I was frightened with what I heard from that person, because what I found out was only the tip of the iceberg. I installed myself definitely there, in the South of Minas, because the subject is of such a gravity(NT: such importance) that I could not leave Ubirajara alone, such is the volume of things to be investigated. We established a partnership since the beginning, even though I only came to meet him there. We are working on this everyday, because we believe in the importance of the elucidation to the Mankind.

If we had not taken seriously the testifying of the girls, that was what originated all and that gave enough reason for us to ascertain the veracity of their witnesses, we would not continue the investigation and would not get to where we are. Ubirajara and I are involved here in this research to try to prove definitely the visits of extraterrestrial to our planet.

The officials at Escola de Sargentos das Armas (ESA), in Tres Coracoes, are professionals that follow superior orders and that, obviously, will not reveal anything about it, because it is not the interest of the Army Forces that this happens. For us, it doesn't change anything the fact of them denying everything, including accusing the investigation of ridiculous and inconsiderate, in an official note. We continue to respect the institution, because we know of the relevant services done to the community and to the country. The process of ufology cover up is worldwide - and in Brazil it would not be different.

The Brazilian government is under strong international pressures. It is not a surprise for me, because I already expected this negative conduct, but it will not change, in no hypothesis, the rhythm of the investigation.

SOURCES IDENTIFICATION - What was revealed from us to the public is limited only to what can be the truth, to what is verifiable, because there are information that, in case it comes to public, we will end up involving and identifying our information sources, which need to stay occult for obvious reasons. These people have access to the knowledge of the operation, what is restrict and highly reserved. With the intention of preserving the identities of the sources, we are being very careful when we speak to the media about our investigation. The quantity of information is a lot bigger the one can think of, but we can't disclose them now, because the proofs that we have are only testimonials.

And the witnesses - civil and military - will not show up to the public because they fear a series of retaliations, and with all the reason. The only substantial proof that we would have for this case, that would be the creatures, was removed from the scene by the Army. Whoever did this operation wanted me, and any other person, to know nothing. It is clear that the captured extraterrestrials aren't in the south of Minas, but were transferred to places of maximum security. Possibly, similar cases to the Varginha have already happened throughout Brasil, only that they were controlled in such a way that it was not possible for us to know about them. [Editor's note: for the luck of Brazilian Ufology, the case occurred in a town where there are serious active ufologists. What if it had happened in a village in the interior of the Amazon, where there are no ufologists? Would we know about the happenings?].

Nothing impends that intelligent beings have already found us. This impact will be very strong and the Human Race will have to be ready for it. We are not alone in the Universe. Perhaps all this serves to man to think better about a series of things and to take care of his planet. It is unavoidable, that later on it will bring benefits to all the population. We believe that what we are revealing now will be a consciousness reconquest in relation to the possibility of intelligent life in other planets. Big Cat Mauls Dog in Wales

A family pet dog may never bark again after it was viciously attacked — by what experts fear was a wild panther.

Vets had to battle to save four-year-old Dusk after he was horrifically mauled outside his home in the Welsh countryside.

The dog miraculously survived despite severe neck injuries, but it is feared he will not "speak" again.

Experts say the dog's injuries are typical of a strike by a panther.

Police are investigating the attack, which happened close to the scene of other mysterious big cat sightings.

Owner Chris O'Mahoney, 35, said: "I knew straight away that it was a big cat attack.

"It's a trait of theirs to attack the neck and face, and this one ripped Dusk's windpipe out."

Dusk, an Alaskan malamute, was attacked late at night on September 7 in Chris' back garden in Brecon, Powys.

Brazen

The businessman said: "There is a big cat in the area — I've seen it myself twice and local farmers have had their sheep attacked.

"The first time it pounced on to a wall like it was on springs which was amazing because it is quite a large animal.

"The second time it walked straight past my van, it was extremely brazen."

Dusk underwent a life-saving operation on his bite wound at the Victoria Veterinary Practice in Merthyr Tydfil.

A spokesman said after the op: "Dusk was definitely attacked by something very big and powerful."

Wildlife expert Danny Nineham, who has been studying big cats sightings in Britain, said: "Dusk is lucky to have survived.

"Big cats are not domestic animals, they live every day by killing. If they don't kill on a daily basis they cannot survive.

"Dusk's injuries are consistent with a wild panther attack."

Dyfed Powys Police wildlife officer Matthew Howells said: "There are some simple guidelines people should follow in these circumstances.

"Don't approach the animal and don't leave any food out for it as this could encourage it to come closer to your home." - thesun

'First Irish case' of death by spontaneous combustion

A man who burned to death in his home died as a result of spontaneous combustion, an Irish coroner has ruled.

It is believed to be the first case of its kind in Ireland.

West Galway coroner Dr Ciaran McLoughlin said it was the first time in 25 years of investigating deaths that he had recorded such a verdict.

Michael Faherty, 76, died at his home at Clareview Park, Ballybane, Galway on 22 December 2010.

Deaths attributed by some to "spontaneous combustion" occur when a living human body is burned without an apparent external source of ignition.

Typically police or fire investigators find burned corpses but no burned furniture.

An inquest in Galway on Thursday heard how investigators had been baffled as to the cause of Mr Faherty's death.

Forensic experts found that a fire in the fireplace of the sitting room where the badly burnt body was found, had not been the cause of the blaze that killed Mr Faherty.

The court was told that no trace of an accelerant had been found and there had been nothing to suggest foul play.

The court heard Mr Faherty had been found lying on his back with his head closest to an open fireplace.

The fire had been confined to the sitting room. The only damage was to the body, which was totally burnt, the ceiling above him and the floor underneath him.

Dr McLoughlin said he had consulted medical textbooks and carried out other research in an attempt to find an explanation.

He said Professor Bernard Knight, in his book on forensic pathology, had written about spontaneous combustion and noted that such reported cases were almost always near an open fireplace or chimney.

"This fire was thoroughly investigated and I'm left with the conclusion that this fits into the category of spontaneous human combustion, for which there is no adequate explanation," he said.

'Sharp intake of breath'

Retired professor of pathology Mike Green said he had examined one suspected case in his career.

He said he would not use the term spontaneous combustion, as there had to be some source of ignition, possibly a lit match or cigarette.

"There is a source of ignition somewhere, but because the body is so badly destroyed the source can't be found," he said.

He said the circumstances in the Galway case were very similar to other possible cases.

"This is the picture which is described time and time again," he said.

"Even the most experienced rescue worker or forensic scientist takes a sharp intake of breath (when they come across the scene)."

Mr Green said he doubted explanations centred on divine intervention.

"I think if the heavens were striking in cases of spontaneous combustion then there would be a lot more cases. I go for the practical, the mundane explanation," he said. - BBC

Fulford has worked for Forbes Magazine as the editor for the Asia-Pacific region. People have tried to attack his credibility on this before, but it is documented. I have checked the references myself.

He was mentioned by Stephen Colbert in one show discussing the so-called Illuminati.

I will also say that Fulford has contact with an incredible number of different sources. He does seem to back up who these sources as much as humanly possible.

NUCLEAR STRIKES AGAINST UNDERGROUND BASES

Recently, these sources informed him that the earthquakes that occurred in Colorado and the Washington DC area, surrounding August 22nd and 23rd, were, in fact, apparently nuclear strikes against underground military facilities.

[These underground bases] have been built by the US government, ostensibly since the early 1960s, at the cost of trillions of dollars of undocumented taxpayer money that is going into these"black projects."

The reason why I contacted Benjamin Fulford is I had [first] read this on his blog [and was amazed.]

Then I started to contact my own sources, which have been built up over being a public figure on the Internet since 1999—and gaining the trust of many people in various classified programs.

I was absolutely astonished when I started to ask around and found out that everyone I know, with one exception who probably wasn't on a need-to-know basis, confirmed that this attack did happen.

THEY NEVER IMAGINED IT COULD HAPPEN

Now again. I'm going to turn it over to Ben in just a second. One more setup thing I want to say here is this.

If you haven't understood the gravity or the implications of what I'm telling you right now, it's important to point [one thing] out.

These guys never imagined that these underground facilities could have been attacked. Ever.

So what has happened here is a seismic shift in this insider war—that is arguably as significant as the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II.

And in fact, it may very well be the workings of the Universe, in terms of karma, that the people responsible for those attacks have now had it happen to them.

So the only thing we know is that the powers that were, as I like to call them, have been putting out stories on the Internet about this event.

What they're actually doing is they are trying to mine for information. They want to find out who knows what.

And I am astonished that my own sources lack the knowledge that Benjamin Fulford has been putting out as to who is responsible for this… and why [it was done].

My intelligence suggests it is possible that as many as 30,000 people were in each of these two underground cities at the time that [the explosions] went off. So we're talking about the potential of 60,000 deaths.

We're also talking about the potential that anyone else working for these programs who is in one of these facilities, which could either be underground or possibly off-world, such as in a space station, on the Moon or elsewhere… is now totally alone and unguarded.

They are not going to be protected. They are not safe. And their superiors are not informing them of the risk they are now in by being in those locations.

Kangaroo Attacks Man in Ohio

An 80-year-old man is in fair condition after a kangaroo attacked him for 15 minutes at an exotic-animal farm in central Ohio.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Marion County sheriff's office received a 911 call Tuesday from a woman saying her father-in-law was hurt. Maj. Jeff Cline says the injury happened at Kokas Exotics in Green Camp.

The Advocate of Newark reports the man was in fair condition Wednesday at a Columbus hospital.

The farm owner's son told WCMH-TV the man was attacked by a 6-foot-tall, 200-pound male kangaroo. The station reports the attack came at breeding time when males can be aggressive.

The son says the kangaroo will be euthanized.

Ohio's lax pet laws came under scrutiny last year when a bear killed its caretaker near Cleveland. - AP

Pittsburgh's new Terror Town may have some real ghosts

A new Strip District haunted-house attraction features a cast of cannibals living in their underground world, although the nearly century-old building that houses them comes with a ghostly cast of its own, say paranormal investigators and people who have businesses in the mammoth structure.

"Everybody hears voices. Everybody hears footsteps, and there's no one in the building," says Bernie Firman, who owns Club Zoo in the building on Smallman Street between 16th and 17th streets.

He and his brother, Sam Firman, open Terror Town on Friday after six months of work.

"The truth is, this building is spooky," says Sam Firman, who owns Sammy's Famous Corned Beef, Downtown.

Standard American Cable constructed the industrial building in 1921, and it has more than 186,000 square feet of space across four floors. Each floor, including the basement that houses the haunted attraction, is 30,000 square feet or more.

The building was home to KML Sales, a discount grocer, and the popular nightclubs Rosebud and Metropol.

The Pennsylvania Department of Paranormal Investigations (not a state agency) explored the building in February.

"This building is loaded with entities," says founder Barb King, 52, of the North Side. "This place is charged."

King and three members of her group say they heard footsteps on upper floors, knocks on walls and watched a shadow dart from behind a tall shelf. Something knocked over a rack of poster paper in the front of the building during their investigation, which also video documented an elevator open and close twice without being prompted.

"This whole building is connected paranormally," King says.

The theme of the haunted house is a cannibal world that sank into the earth, inspired by stories of homeless communities in abandoned subway tunnels in New York City, says Michael "MagGot" Schneider, who designed the haunted house and supervises its 40 to 50 paid actors.

"It just oozes creep," says Schneider, 32, a Garfield resident and filmmaker-actor who has worked at haunted houses for a decade, including Gateway Clipper's former U.S.S. Nightmare at Station Square.

The tour through the cannibal world can take about 45 minutes. It starts in a funeral-home chapel and winds through the deranged home of a cannibal family before continuing into Terror Town. Scenes include an insane asylum, strip bar and gore-filled grocery store, among others.

King believes the building's entities have become more active with the activity surrounding the haunted house. She and her group again reported witnessing a number of aberrations last week during a walk-through.

"We could see them peaking around from behind the walls, watching," King says.

The entities include a group of young kids and indigent people and an old man, she says.

Bernie Firman says an employee was alone cleaning Club Zoo on a weekend day. He looked into a mop bucket and saw a young boy's reflection from the balcony above. He looked up and no one was there. As he went upstairs, stacks of plastic cups toppled to the floor behind a bar. The boy could not be found, Firman says.

"That little boy has been spotted in several places in the building," Firman says.

Julian Smith needs no convincing when it comes to the building being haunted.

"There is definitely some paranormal activity there. I'm sure of it," says Smith, 57, of Shaler, who owned a paintball business on the third floor from 1997 to 2002.

Smith and his employees often heard footsteps walking behind them, and sensed that someone was there as they crossed the cavernous playing field alone in the dark, he says. After he installed video cameras with monitors in the staging area, he and others often saw a male figure standing in the middle of the playing field, always in the same spot and always staring into the same lens.

"It was clearly a person," Smith says.

Only it wasn't. No one was there when they went in to look.

Chairs moved at night. Locked doors unlocked. An unplugged speaker mysteriously caught fire in 2001, and neither the fire department nor other experts could explain how it started, Smith says.

A manager once saw a group of people in the observation deck as he exited the dark playing field at closing time. A few seconds later, he discovered the building was empty except for himself. He left and never returned, Smith says.

"I used to have some serious nightmares about being there," Smith says. "I would wake up in cold sweats. So, do I ever really want to go back in that building? No, not really." - pittsburghlive

Well...this is something a bit different though, maybe not for this blog in particular. Anyway, I stumbled on a small passage about pig-faced beings and it resulted in the following:

"The incident concerned a gentleman who was staying at Markham Square, Chelsea in order to visit his two sons. On the first night of his stay in a dingy room, only escaping the grip of full darkness by the hue of a lamp, the man awoke with a sudden nightmarish jerk, and found himself face to face with a ghastly creature.

He commented, "It was a dwarfed tubby figure, with a face like a pig, perfectly naked, in a strong light. The whole figure resembled in appearance the scalded body of a pig, but the legs and arms were those of a human being brutalized; male or female, I could not say."

Within fifteen seconds the awful beast vanished, leaving the witness huddled and shaking under his sheets, hypnotized by fear as the sweat dripped profusely from his brow. The occasional bout of slumber provided no respite from the memory of the presence, and only the morning light erased what the witness believed was no nightmare.

Only a picture which had fallen from a connecting door provided any answer. Maybe after hitting the floor in the night it had awoken the sleeping man, but no explanation was forthcoming on the pig-faced humanoid which had mortified the man. No other such haunting was ever reported from the area, and the tale of the pig-faced spectre was long forgotten...until now." - Haunted Britain

There have been stories of pig-faced women (and occasionally men) that originated in Holland, England and France in the 15th century. The majority of these tales told of a wealthy woman whose body was of normal human appearance, but who had the face of a pig.

In the earliest forms of the story, the woman's pig-like appearance was the result of witchcraft. Following her wedding day, the pig-faced woman's new husband was granted the choice of having her appear beautiful to him but pig-like to others, or pig-like to him and beautiful to others. When her husband told her that the choice was hers, the enchantment was broken and her pig-like appearance vanished. These stories became particularly popular in England, and later in Ireland.

The magical elements gradually vanished from the story, and the existence of pig-faced women began to be treated as fact. The story became particularly widespread in Dublin in the early 19th century, where it became widely believed that reclusive 18th-century philanthropist Griselda Steevens had kept herself hidden from view because she had the face of a pig. In late 1814 and early 1815, rumour swept London that a pig-faced woman was living in Marylebone. Her existence was widely reported as fact, and numerous alleged portraits of her were published. With belief in pig-faced women commonplace, unscrupulous showmen exhibited living "pig-faced women" at fairs. These were not genuine women, but shaven bears dressed in women's clothing. - The Pig-Faced Lady of Manchester Square: And Other London Medical Marvels

Dr. Jan Bondeson wrote at least four books on the bizarre, and the Pig-faced Lady is a tour de force and highly researched.

Was the early-nineteenth-century pig-faced lady in the title real or just a hoax? The author's meticulous research cannot find the answer. Her predecessor Tannakin Skinker from Holland, who made her first appearance in London in 1639 where she was hoping to find a husband, was much featured in ballads and songs but she too may have been more legend than fact.

Tannakin Skinker was born to Joachim and Parnel Skinker in 1618 in "Wirkham, a neuter towne betweene the Emperour and the Hollander, scituate on the river Rhyne". Joachim Skinker is described as "a man of good revenue, but of a great estate in money and cattle." During Parnel's pregnancy, an elderly woman had begged her for money. Parnel was busy and refused to pay, and the old woman had left, "muttering to her selfe the Divells pater noster, and was heard to say 'As the Mother is Hoggish, so Swinish shall be the Child shee goeth withall'". At Tannakin's birth her body and limbs were correctly proportioned, but her face had a pig's snout, "not only a stain and blemish, but a deformed uglinesse, making all the rest loathsome, contemptible and odious to all that lookt upon her in her infancie." The midwife who had delivered the baby was sworn to secrecy, and the Skinkers raised her in a private room. She ate from a silver trough, "to which she stooped and ate, just like a Swine doth in his swilling tub".

Tannakin's deformity was soon discovered, and many locals came to hear her pig-like speech or to watch her feed from the trough. The old woman was located, tried and convicted for witchcraft, but even at the stake refused or was unable to reverse the enchantment.

When Tannakin was between 16 and 17 years old, her father consulted Vandermast, "a famous Artist, who was both a Mathematician, and an Astrologian a man who was suspected to have been well versed in blacke and hidden Arts", as to how the curse might be undone. Vandermast concluded that as long as Tannakin remained a virgin she would retain her pig's face, but were she married, and not to "a Clowne, Bore or Pesant", she might be cured.

The Skinker family announced that any gentleman who "would take her to his bed after loyall Matrimony" would receive a dowry of £40,000. The dowry, a huge sum for the time, prompted a large number of would-be husbands. A Scottish captain arrived, having spent the greater part of a month's pay on a new suit, and was taken by Tannakin's figure and deportment. On lifting the veil to view her face, however, "hee would stay no other conference, but ran away without further answer, saying; they must pardon him, for hee could indure no Porke." An English sow-man (pig farmer) assured the family that his familiarity with pigs meant he would accept Tannakin's appearance, but after meeting her he left the building, saying that "so long as I have known Rumford, I never saw such a Hogsnout".

Several further would-be suitors visited the Skinkers, but all were repulsed by Tannakin's face and she remained unmarried. Despairing of finding a suitable husband in Wirkham, the Skinker family moved to London, and took up residence in either Blackfriars or Covent Garden. Many who met her were taken by her elegant dress and excellent demeanour.

Eventually, the Skinkers found a man in London willing to marry Tannakin. On the day of the wedding, and despite all efforts to improve her appearance, her face was as pig-like as ever. With the wedding service concluded, the newly-wed couple retired to the bedroom. When they lay in bed together for the first time, Tannakin reached for her husband's arm, saying that she would release him from his vows provided that he would look at her in the face. He turned to look at her, and saw "a sweet young Lady of incomparable beauty and feature, the like to whom to his imagination he never had in his whole life time beheld". He reached to kiss her, but she refused, saying:

Sir, I am indeed no other than I now seeme unto you; and of these two things I give you free choice, whether I shall appeare to you thus as you now see me, young, faire, and lovely in your bed, and all the daytime, and abroad, of my former deformity: or thus beautifull in the day, to the sight of your friends, but in your armes every night of my former Age and Uglinesse: of these two things I give you free choice of, which till you have resolv'd me, there can be no other familiarity betwixt in: therefore without pause give me a speedy answer.

A man bows before an elegantly-dressed woman with a pig's head. The man says "God save you sweet mistress"; the woman replies "Ough".

Torn between the choice of a wife who would appear beautiful to him but hideous to all his friends, or hideous to him but beautiful to all his friends, he could not reach a decision but instead said to her "into you owne hands and choyse I give the full power and soveraignty to make election of which you best please." On hearing this, Tannakin turned to him and said:

Now Sir, you have given me that which all women most desire, my Will, and Soveraignty; and know I, was by a wicked and sorcerous step-dame inchanted, never to returne to my pristine shape, till I was first married, and after had received such power from my Husband · And now from henceforth I shall be the same to you night and day, of that youth and lively-hood which you now see mee; till Time and Age breed new alteration, even to the last period of my life. - A Certaine Relation

This account of Tannakin Skinker is no doubt a fable, but the next tale may be more truth than fiction:

Steevens Hospital, Dublin, Ireland

Griselda Steevens (1653–1746), sometimes written as "Grizel Steevens", was the twin sister of Dr Richard Steevens (1653–1710), a Dublin physician. Dr Steevens died in 1710, bequeathing an estate with an income of £606 per year to Griselda. A clause in Dr Steevens' will stipulated that on Griselda's death, the income was to be used to provide a hospital for the poor of Dublin.

Although the terms of Dr Steevens' will were that work on the hospital would not begin until after Griselda Steevens' death, she decided to begin work on the hospital in 1720. Reserving only £120 per year for her own use, she used the remaining funds to buy a plot of land near Kilmainham and to build the new hospital, with the sole condition being that she be granted a suite of apartments in the building.

As a youth Griselda had suffered a disorder of the eyes, and since then had worn a veil while in sunlight. Shy and reclusive, while conducting her charitable works in the Dublin slums she would remain in her carriage while servants gave out alms to the poor. By 1723 a sufficient portion of the new Dr Steevens' Hospital was completed to accommodate 40 patients, in addition to Griselda's apartments. The remainder of the hospital, with space for 200 patients, opened in 1733. Griselda lived in the hospital from 1723 until her death.

At some point, it became a common belief in Dublin that Griselda Steevens had a pig's face. It is unclear when the rumour arose. Robert Chambers and Irish Georgian Society founder Desmond Guinness claim that the rumour was current in her lifetime, but Thomas Kirkpatrick, author of History of Dr Steevens' Hospital Dublin, says that "There is absolutely no evidence of this story in contemporary records, nor indeed does it appear to have been connected with the good lady until the nineteenth century. It is not quite certain when this story first gained circulation. Croker-King, who wrote a history of the hospital in 1785, makes no mention of it, nor is there any suggestion of it in the newspaper accounts of the death of Madam Steevens, or the published account of the hospital in the eighteenth century."

The rumour was that Griselda Steevens' reclusiveness and always being veiled were owing to her having been born with a pig's head. Chambers speculates that her unusual name may have contributed to the legend, and notes the common belief that she was named "Grisly" on account of her appearance when born. It was claimed that while pregnant with Richard and Griselda, Steevens' mother had said "take away your litter of pigs!" to a woman beggar asking for money to feed her children, and Griselda had then been born with the head and face of a pig. Dismayed by the popular belief that she had a pig's head, Griselda took to sitting on an open balcony to allow the public to see her face. This failed to stem the spread of the rumour, and she commissioned a portrait of herself to be hung in the main hall of the hospital. The portrait failed to have the desired effect; many of the public chose instead to believe a portrait in a pub neighbouring the hospital, which showed Steevens with a pig's head; the pub also displayed a silver trough alleged to have belonged to her. She eventually withdrew from public view completely before her death on 18 March 1746.

Surgeon and historian William Wilde recollected that as a medical student at Dr Steevens' Hospital in 1832 he was shown a silver trough, alleged to have belonged to Griselda Steevens, and accounts suggest that in the early 19th century a plaster cast of a human face with a pig's snout was on display at the hospital. Although the hospital authorities later forbade the display of alleged Steevens memorabilia on pain of dismissal, in the later half of the 19th century the belief that Steevens had a pig's face remained common. In the 1860s, a Dublin woman recollected that in her youth a large silver punchbowl, embossed with a family crest of a boar's head, was shown to visitors and was claimed to have been the Pig-faced Lady's trough. - The History of Mercer's Charitable Hospital in Dublin

Jerusalem Temple Mount UFO Videos Confirmed As Hoax

Israeli TV Channel 10 investigator Nitay Elboim has uncovered new information about the popular Jerusalem UFO videos taken in January of this year. The videos made headlines around the world, and many in the UFO community still talk about these controversial videos. However, this new information sheds further doubt on their authenticity. You can watch Nitay's report in the YouTube video below.

The first video was taken by Eligael Gadliovich, and soon after three teenagers posted another video of what appears to be the same object. In these videos a light can be seen descending over the famous Dome of the Rock. It then flashes and speeds straight up and out of sight. The videos are very shocking and immediately became a hit. They were featured on news programs throughout the world.

During his investigation, Nitay discovered that Eligael is a filmmaker and actor with his own film production company. Nitay also found Golan Ardiv, a film teacher, among the actors in one of Eligael's movies, and it just so happens that the teenagers who took the second video attend the school where Golan teaches. Although the makers of each video claimed not to know each other, this evidence made Nitay have doubts. He called Eligael to ask about his association with the teenagers.

Eligael was very cryptic in the call. When asked if this was all a coincidence, Eligael said he did not believe in coincidences and suggested that these connections may not be a coincidence. He then also mentions that he wanted to investigate the incident from a cinematic point of view. Nitay appeared confused by his statements and asked if Eligael felt there was a base for what Nitay was suggesting. At this point Eligael said he was too busy and he would have to go, but before ending the call he said that everything everyone was saying about the video was true. What he meant by that is unknown. Was this a confession of sorts? Either way, Eligael did seem to be caught off guard by Nitay's discoveries.

Nitay was unable to reach Eligael again to get further clarification, but he was able to reach the film teacher, Golan. Golan said he was present when Eligael filmed the UFO, but that he didn't know the teenagers. When asked if the teenagers went to the school where he taught, Golan changed his story and admitted that he did know them. Nitay then asked Golan if he had a chance to talk to the students about their UFO video. Golan said it has been busy since they are approaching final exams, so he hasn't talked with them yet.

In summary, Nitay uncovered that Eligael is a filmmaker, the teenagers in the second video are film students and Golan not only knows them, but lied about his association with them. To Channel 10 this was enough for them to determine that the videos were not authentic, although they admit the motive behind the hoax is still not clear. They speculated that perhaps Eligael is going to use the video to help promote an upcoming film. - openminds.tv

Strange Encounter in Gulf Breeze, Florida

(Unedited) - I fell asleep in my recliner aprox. 9 p.m. Both of my dogs slept on both sides of my chair on the floor. My boyfriend was on the couch next to my recliner and he was asleep also. Aproximately 3 a.m. i awoke to a horrific jabbing pain im my mid-lower back right on my spinal column. Upon awakening i can vividly remember sitting up and grabbing my back at the same time..as i turned to sit all the way up i saw a "large human like figure" turn away from me and proceeded to walk toward my front door with some sort of very large clear syringe he placed on his right hip like a gun would be placed for carrying purposes. I remember trying to scream out and pointed at the same time but "nothing" would come out of my mouth no matter how hard i attempted to shout i could not produce even a whisper. It was as if he possessed some sort of immortal power over my actions until he was out of my sight. He never once turned around where i could see his face but he was all "black" and "soldier like in his walk...like on a mission he needed to complete?"..."very muscular and strong in appearance". I remember immediately grabbing my arms and saying to myself, "Oh my God...i am not dreaming...this really did happen and this alien creature just inserted something into my back...or took something out."...I had no further pain from that episode and could not bring myself to even tell my boyfriend about it for aproximately 6 months thinking my family would think i was insane..

One of the wierdest things about the situation was that both my dogs never even budged....nor did my boyfriend wake up during the incident...I was in total disbelief. Not scared for some odd reason...maybe because he never showed his face...i dont know. However, to this day...i don't know if he possibly abducted me during the night and had just finished bringing me back consciously by inserting some sort of medication to awaken me or not. I "do know" for a fact that he had just finished using that large syringe on me because i watched his motions intently and he was walking away and at the same time placing that syringe to his hip "holster". The last thing i saw was him walking towards the front door but right before he got to it he veered to the airconditioning vent as if he had come from "it". Possibly from underground i wondered? I then faded out for aprox. 30 minutes and awoke with a very clear vivid rememberance of this event. I never believed or even thought something like this could be true but I now KNOW they are out there and in OUR homes at their own leisure!! They are "quiet", "meticulous", "strong", "unafraid", and i think "curious" in nature. They seem to be in a "time zone" that only they are familiar with and seem to have that mastered so well as to quietly appear as they "need or want to" then disappear without a trace. Things are still happening here in Gulf Breeze and now in my new residence as "glowing type" foot prints are appearing continually everywhere on my carpet during the night!! I am not a story teller and would LOVE to take a polygraph so badly..People believe me...i do not know if there has been some sort of government cover up about this UFO issue but why would we have full grown aliens walking around right now in our homes of all places??? They had to grow to get that big so there has to be many many more of them...right? OMG! I do not know why "I" am being targeted as an "experiment" to "him" or "them" but it is not ending for me...i really am not scared because i have never lost faith in my God above..he has his hand on me...but i really really need some help on this other issue...If there is some sort of alien specialist out there feel free to call...a.m. preferably...and only serious inquiries...I am not a gossipist or yapper....and would not be writing this if it were not true...but heed my words now...we ARE being watched and experimented on...i just dont know why or what they want...Be safe and please believe this is no joke folks..i now know they DO exists. - MUFON CMS

French boy finds 30-year-old human fingers in jar

A French schoolboy has dug up a glass jar containing severed human fingers preserved in alcohol which police believe may belong to a local carpenter who lost four digits in an accident 30 years ago.

The boy, aged seven, made the gruesome discovery on Monday when he was playing behind the gymnasium of his school in Chilly-Mazarin, just south of Paris, and noticed a jar poking out of the earth, a police spokeswoman said.

He dug out the liquid-filled jar and saw the partially decomposed fingers inside.

"With time the jar must have risen to the surface and the fingers were found in well-preserved condition," the police spokeswoman said.

The boy's father called local police, who set out to track down the origin of the severed digits.

Following local media reports on the story, police received a telephone a call from a person whose grandfather, a woodworker, used to live near the gymnasium and lost four of his fingers 30 years ago in a work accident.

At the time, his fingers could not be surgically reattached so the carpenter put them in a jar full of alcohol and buried them near his home, the police spokeswoman said.

The carpenter, who is still alive, has since moved away, and police were trying to contact him on Wednesday. - reuters

Hong Kong girls taken to hospital after seeing ghosts

Two Hong Kong schoolgirls were taken to hospital after collapsing in terror claiming they had seen the ghosts of Japanese soldiers from World War II, a news report said Tuesday.

The girls were among a party of 12 exploring the site of an abandoned school in the New Territories, which is rumoured to be haunted, when they claim they saw an apparition of a marching army.

The South China Morning Post reported that the girls fled in terror and fainted.

The school, which closed in 1998, is believed to have been used by Japanese troops during the occupation of Hong Kong in World War II. - monstersandcritics

Chasing Down The 'Min Min Lights' Phenomenon

If you ever visit Eastern Australia, there's a rare chance you may encounter the Min Min light, a spectral luminescence that trails the viewer and is often mistaken for a UFO. But what causes this bizarre flickering pursuer?

As evinced by recent news reports, Min Min lights still bedevil motorists and are a fixture of Australia's paranormal culture. The town of Boulia has a particular affinity for the lights, which have been documented prior to European settlement of Australia.

Also — like any weird phenomenon worth its salt — Min Min lights have been the subject of overblown dramatization à la Unsolved Mysteries.

According to Dr. Jack Pettigrew of the University of Queensland, Min Min lights are a form of Fata Morgana, or a complex mirage that results when faraway light is distorted by temperature changes:

The Min Min light occurs when light, from a natural or man-made source, is refracted to an observer who is tens, or even hundreds, of kilometres away, by an inverted mirage, or Fata Morgana [...] Named after the Morgan fairy, who was reputed to be able to conjure cities on the surface of the sea ice, the Fata Morgana has a real physical phenomenon, being caused by a temperature inversion

A cold, dense layer of air next to the ground (or sea, or sea ice) carries light far over the horizon to a distant observer without the usual dissipation and radiation, to produce a vivid mirage that baffles and enchants because of its unfamiliar optical properties.

Personal experiences:

I was driving from Innamincka, which is not so far from Boulia, to Boulia and up to a place called Mount Isa, when I noticed a pair of "headlights", tailgating behind me. It was getting really annoying after five minutes and I was begging him/her to overtake, but he/she wouldn't. So I decided to slow down to piss him/her off. Then, all of a sudden, the so called "headlights" turned out to be "Min Min Lights". I stopped the car, hearing the screech of the tires behind me as the Min Min Lights flew around the car.

I was searching for my camera to take a photo when one of the Min Min Lights got closer to my car. It hovered closer and closer almost blinding me, then it just dissolved as the break of dawn was coming up.

I never ever want to go there again, and I'm sure you won't as soon as you seen the Min Min Light.

This is a story that my dad told me that happened to him many years ago. He was out Roo (Kangaroo) shooting with eight of his friends on a large property in South West corner of New South Wales, it was about one or two o'clock in the morning so still very dark when one of the guys gun seized up or something, so they stopped the ute so this guy could go around into the head light and try and fix it.

While the others were waiting they saw something that not one of them could explain a large ball of light appeared and bounced across the ground around them completely lighting up the whole area as bright as day then it just bounced off into the bush. Out of the nine there, eight of them saw it, the only one who didn't see it was the guy fixing his gun in the head light.

A day or to later the story of this strange light had got around town and from there ABC news found out about it and reported a story on it. Most people say that it was the Min Min* light but it had never been reported in this area before and never since but all I know is not one of the guys have been back to area since and not one of them will go again.

*Min Min light is mysterious Australian outback phenomenon best known manifestation of the Australian "ghost light" genre is the famous Min Min Light. Hundreds of people over the years have told of seeing the Min Min Light in the Boulia or Winton district (this is about 2000 kilometers from were my dad and his friends saw the light). It has been reported high in the sky, at times oscillating up and down like a yo-yo. A frequent feature is that, unlike a headlight, it lights its surrounds on all sides. It appears to be a curious, friendly light, often approaching but never threatening, although at times causing panic in the minds of the beholders.

If you talk to old timers out there who had seen it and they were terrified by it, it's a bit embarrassing for them because hardened outback men can be brought to tears by this thing. It really is quite alarming.

Rancher Henry Lamond told of an experience he had in the early 1900's:

...I did not leave the head station until about 2 am, expecting to get to Slasher's well before daylight… 8 or 10 miles out on the downs I saw the headlight of a car coming straight for me. Cars, though they were not common, were not rare. I took note of the thing, singing and trotting as I rode, and I even estimated the strength of the approaching light by the way it picked out individual hairs in the mare's mane.

Suddenly I realized it was not a car light — it remained in one bulbous ball instead of dividing into the 2 headlights, which it should have done as it came closer; it was too green-glary for an acetylene light; it floated too high for any car; there was something eerie about it.

The light came on, floating as airily as a bubble, moving with comparative slowness ... I should estimate now that it was moving at about 10 mph and anything from 5 to 10 feet above the ground ... Its size, I would say, at an approximate guess, would be about that of a new-risen moon. That light and I passed each other, going in opposite directions. I kept an eye on it while it was passing, and I'd say it was about 200 yards off when suddenly it just faded and died away. It did not go out with a snap -its vanishing was more like the gradual fading of the wires in an electric bulb.

The Thornton Heath Poltergeist Ordeal

The Thornton Heath poltergeist case is not to be confused with the 1938 case of the same name, which was investigated by Dr Nandor Fodor.

This later case started one night in late August 1972 in the south London district of Thornton Heath, Croydon. A family first experienced the poltergeist activity when they were woken in the middle of the night by a blaring bedside radio that had somehow turned itself on...tuned to a foreign-language station. This was the beginning of a string of events that lasted nearly four years.

A particular lampshade repeatedly fell to the floor by some unseen force. During the Christmas season of 1972, an ornament was hurled across the room, smashing into the husband's forehead. "As he flopped into an armchair, the Christmas tree began to shake violently. Come the New Year and there were footsteps in the bedroom when there was no one there, and one night the couple's son awoke to find a man in old fashioned dress staring threateningly at him. The family's fear grew when, as they entertained friends one night, there was a loud knocking at the front door, the living room door was then flung open and all the house's lights came on."

They contacted the local Church who in turn sent a priest to bless their home. Sadly this did little good as the phenomena continued unabated. "Objects flew through the air, loud noises were heard and the family would sometimes hear a noise which suggested some large piece of furniture...had crashed to floor. When they went to investigate, nothing would be disturbed."

A medium who was consulted told the family that the house was haunted by a farmer of the name Chatterton, who considered the family trespassers on his property. An investigation bore out the fact that had indeed lived in the house in the mid-18th century. "Chatterton's wife now joined in in causing mayhem, and often the tenant's wife would be followed up the stairs at night by an elderly gray-haired woman wearing a pinafore and with her hair tied back in a bun. If looked at, she would disappear back into the shadows. The family even reported seeing the farmer appear on their television screens, wearing a black jacket with wide, pointed lapels, high-necked shirt and black cravat."

After the family moved out of the house, the poltergeist activity ceased, and none have been reported by subsequent residents.

Croydon's Ghostly Past Diminishes

Whether or not the overall strange past had anything to do with this particular poltergeist, the Croydon area is known for it's macabre history.

Croydon is an ancient town and people have settled here since the 6th century. As such, the borough has a past rich in spooks.

Frances Stewart, who researched Croydon's ghostly past in the late 1980s, wrote in her book Around Haunted Croydon: "So many of Croydon's original buildings have been demolished that it is hardly surprising to find the centre becoming devoid of ghosts.

"An office block that scrapes the sky or an exhaust-filled multi-storey car park are not fitting habitats for self-respecting spirits."

Twenty years later the town centre is almost unrecognisable from what it once was and Croydon's spirits have been forced to haunt the borough's more rural outskirts.

One of the centre's lost ghosts was a distressed woman who used to appear at the top of a staircase in the Old Palace, originally the manor house of the Archbishop of Canterbury and now an exclusive girls' school.

The ghost appeared crying and wringing her hands in despair.

It has been suggested she was one of Elizabeth I's maids-in-waiting who committed suicide in the house when she had a baby out of wedlock.

According to Mrs Stewart, there have been many exorcisms in the building in the past.

More recent additions to the borough's ghostly population were the spooks that haunted the site of the Croydon Airport. Open from 1915 to 1959, this early icon to aviation was the site of many accidents and was also heavily bombed during the war.

The first spirit sighted there was a Dutch pilot in the 1930s.

His aircraft crashed in a fog that descended upon him suddenly, after he took off in favourable weather.

About a fortnight later, a pilot who was plotting his course when a voice behind him said: "You can't take off, the weather is just the same as when I did."

The pilot spun around to see a figure of the dead pilot standing behind him. Despite the clear day, he was in too much of a shock to take off and just a few hours later, a thick fog descended on the airfield as predicted.

The number of people killed during the war meant many ghosts were sighted in the borough in the 1940s and 50s. One sighting was in Thornton Heath.

A Scottish lady moved into a maisonette built on one of the old bomb sites in Princess Road. One evening she saw two strange children sitting at the top of the stairs in her house. They vanished and when the puzzled woman asked her own children if they had any friends over, they said that they had not.

The sightings continued and the woman soon discovered a brother and a sister had been killed when a bomb had fallen on their house in that exact same spot.

A haunting can take many forms and usually occur in places where there has been a violent or unusual death.

Whether violent, benign and helpful or merely sad, it would appear that Croydon's ghosts are vanishing along with much of Croydon's past. - croydonguardian.co.uk

Nicolas Cage...an Immortal?

The answer, of course, is no… well, probably not. For one thing he seems to be aging right before our eyes and for another he has never exhibited an inability to consume solid food, nor any signs of heliophobia for that matter. Nevertheless one e-Bay seller insists that he has unearthed a Civil War era photograph that proves that the ubiquitous actor was alive (or undead, as the case may be) way back in the 1870s.

The owner of the admittedly eerie photograph is an antiques dealer from Bristol, Tennessee, by the name of Jack Mord — which, in and of itself, sounds a bit creepy, like an old Mad Magazine spoof of Jack Lord that would come out around Halloween time. Regardless of his appellation, Mord claimed that he stumbled across the strange picture in back of an old photo album that was allegedly: "filled with an unusual number of Civil War death portraits." Dig reveals human skulls mounted on stakes

Several human skulls found mounted on wooden stakes have been uncovered from a Stone Age lake bed in central Sweden in what is believed to be the first discovery of its kind anywhere in the world.

"We found two skulls that still had wooden stakes sticking out of them through a whole at the base of the skull," archeologist Fredrik Hallgren, head of excavation with the Stiftelsen Kulturmiljövård Mälardalen ('Cultural Preservation Society of Mälardalen') told The Local.

The skulls and other artifacts, including bones of wild animals, were recovered at the Kanaljorden excavation site in the town of Motala in central Sweden.

According to results from carbon-14 dating techniques, the skulls and other items are estimated to be about 8,000-years-old.

"As far as we know, this discovery is unique in the world. Nothing has been found like this that is so old," said Hallgren.

The mounted skulls were found with the stakes inserted the full length from the base to the top of the skull.

In another case a temporal bone of one individual identified as a female was found placed inside the skull of another woman.

Altogether Hallgren and his colleagues have identified skulls or skull fragments from 11 individuals, including both men and women and ranging in age from infants to middle-age.

The bones were found in what was a shallow lake during the early Stone Age which appears to have served as a ceremonial burial site.

"Clearly this lake was some sort of holy place for the people who lived here at the time," said Hallgren.

Archaeologists are exploring two theories to explain why the human skulls were mounted on wooden stakes before being placed in the lake bed

"One thought is that it was part of some sort of secondary burial ritual where the skulls were removed from dead bodies that had initially been placed elsewhere," said Hallgren.

"After the soft tissue had rotted away, the skulls were removed and placed on the stakes before being placed in the shallow lake."

Another theory is that the mounted skulls are trophies brought back from battles with other settlers in the area.

"It may have been a way to prove one's success on the battlefield," Hallgren explained.

Further analysis is currently underway to determine if the bones are remains of locals or people with a distant geographic origin. Using DNA and other laboratory techniques, archaeologists will also try to find out if the remains found at the site belong to a single family group or persons unrelated to one another.

Hallgren said that, as far as he knew, the discovery of human skulls mounted on stakes from this period of history was unprecedented.

"There are other examples of human heads being mounted on stakes, but most of the finds are from the colonial period," he said.

The Kanaljorden settlement excavation site has been ongoing since 2009 and is located about 500 metres from Motala's central train station. The site dates from a part of the Stone Age known as the Mesolithic period, at which time the area around Motala was deemed an almost perfect place to live.

There was no agriculture in the area, however, with settlers instead surviving by fishing, hunting, and gathering. - thelocal

Holy Cows!

New figures show seventeen cases of attacks on people in the first half of this year – more than the total number of bites since 2004.

Animal rights groups blamed a sharp increase in the number of people bitten by cows and buffaloes in the capital New Delhi on a surge in building projects which have blocked their traditional grazing routes and left the creatures bewildered and panicked.

Campaigners said many of the cows and buffaloes wandering Delhi's roads are owned and neglected by illegal dairies who are concerned only about their milk production.

Vasanti Kumar, of Stray Relief and Animal Welfare (STRAW) said the situation had been created by the failure of local officials to keep cattle off the streets, and by a reverential public which feeds them.

"They are a cause for concern and cause many accidents, not just hurting humans but themselves. Many people feed the cows and other stray animals in public places as they are considered to be sacred. This has to stop," she said.

Uma Menon of the charity Friendicoes said the increase in traffic in the city had made the cows more aggressive. "Bovines are programmed with a map to reach back to their homes but with the fast-changing city landscape, they get strayed and panic," she said.

"Animals hear much higher frequency sounds than humans, there is too much noise produced by traffic. This can be a cause of animals turning violent in public places, although their instinctive behavior is not to hurt." - telegraph

UFO sightings in U.S. soared this summer...to more than DOUBLE national average

UFO sightings in the U.S. have more than doubled this summer, according to new research.

The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) - an organisation that tracks reports of unidentified flying objects - said some states doubled their numbers in the last six weeks.

According to MUFON, 1,013 sightings were reported in August, up from an average of about 500 per month nationwide.

MUFON international director Clifford Clift told Life's Little Mysteries: 'It's pretty exciting.

Mr Clift said the 'UFO flap', which occurs when a cluster of sightings happen in a short period of time, could be due to a psychological phenomenon called 'priming', in which people believe they see what they are told to look for, whether it exists or not.

A shift in focus in popular culture could have led to an increase in sightings, he said - with more books, movies and television shows focusing on the mystery of the UFO and alien invasion.

'It's likely that the media and (alien-themed) movies that are coming out, like Apollo 18 and Paul, are piquing people's interest in UFOs,' Mr Clift told Little Mysteries.

People are also more likely to go outdoors in the summer months, increasing the chance for sightings.

Numbers could also be inflated due to duplication in sightings.

Mr Clift also said MUFON has received reports of objects reported as UFOs, which the organisation has determined to be other objects, such as airplanes, shooting stars, satellites and weather balloons.

The organisation, he said, is still investigating data on UFO sighting reports from recent weeks. - dailymail

Billy Meier and the CIA

Whether you love or loathe Billy Meier his activities have been the subject of intensive monitoring by intelligence authorities including the CIA. Officialdom at a secret level take the man very seriously indeed. The extraordinary surveillance of the Swiss UFO contactee has been outlined in detail by the late American investigator, Wendelle Stevens, who spent eight years involved in an in-depth investigation of Meier and his followers at their farm near Hinterschmidruti. Stevens gives a detailed picture of the contact that he and fellow investigators Lee and Brit Elders were pressured into having with a range of intelligence agencies during their visits to Switzerland in the late 1970s and 1980s. These pre-briefings and debriefings, which took place mainly in London, could stretch for days and were dominated by discussions with a senior CIA officer who maintained a secure, sealed off section of a London hotel. The interviews were sometimes marked by anomalous phenomena that Stevens could only ascribe to the intervention of Meier's alleged Pleiadian visitors – in other words, while the CIA was monitoring Meier, the ET visitors appeared to be monitoring the CIA with technology that left no doubt about who was on top. The ET pranks included dematerializations of documents and shenanigans with a secure CIA telephone line. This cooperation by Stevens and the Elders with a range of interested government agents was frankly admitted by Stevens in anecdotes scattered through several of the six volumes of his investigation reports and contact notes of Meier. This huge output of investigative material totalling nearly 3,000 pages was published by Stevens between 1982 and 1996 and reflects the former US Air Force Lt Colonel's conviction that the Meier contacts, though bizarre and eccentric by conventional standards, were authentic. Dwayyo: Maryland Dogman

Back in May of this year I posted a narrative describing the Snallygaster, legendary beast from my neck of the woods in Maryland. Another cryptid from this region is the Dwayyo...not as well known as the Snallygaster, but just as terrifying to those who have encountered the creature.

The Dwayyo or Dewayo is a mammalian said to be hairy, have a bushy tail, and is sometimes bipedal. At times it has features similar to a wolf but with the arms, stance and stature of a human. The first mention of the name 'Dwayyo' comes from a sighting in 1944 from an area in Carroll County, Maryland. Witnesses heard the creature make 'frightful screams' and there were footprints attesting to the claims of the sighting.

The creature had first come to prominence after a story ran in the Fredrick News Post in November of 1965. Reporter George May wrote in the article, "Mysterious Dwayyo Loose in County" that a young man, named anonymously as 'John Becker' heard a strange noise in his backyard which was situated on the outskirts of Gambrill State Park. Upon going out to investigate the noise he initially saw nothing, so he headed back in. It was then that he caught site of the creature. Something was moving toward him in the dark, Becker was quoted that "It was as big as a bear, had long black hair, a bushy tail, and growled like a wolf or dog in anger." The thing quickly moved toward him on its hind legs and began to attack him. He fought off the creature and drove it back into the woods, later calling police to report the incident.

In the summer of 1966, the creature was again sighted on the outskirts of Gambrill State Park. A man only referred to as 'Jim A.' encountered the Dwayyo as he was heading toward a camp site. It was described as a shaggy two legged creature the size of a deer that had a triangle shaped head with pointed ears and chin. It was dark brown in color and when approached it made a horrid scream and backed away from the man. Jim described it as having an odd walk as it retreated, it's legs, "stuck out from the side of the trunk of the body making its movements appear almost spider-like as it backed away".

In the Fall of 1976 another sighting of the Dwayyo took place in Fredrick County near Thurmont, between Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain National Park. Two men drove off route 77 and unto a private road so they could 'spot deer' by their headlights in order to see how thick the native population had become before deer season. To their surprise, they did not catch a deer in their lights but instead a large animal ran across the front of their car. They described the creature as, "at least 6 ft tall but inclined forward since it was moving quickly. Its head was fairly large and similar to the profile of a wolf. The body was covered in brown or brindle colored fur but the lower half had a striped pattern of noticeable darker and lighter banding. The forelegs (or arms) were slimmer and held out in front as it moved. The back legs were very muscled and thick similar to perhaps a kangaroo. This was not a hominid type creature; it did not have the characteristics of an ape. It was much more similar to a wolf or ferocious dog however it was definitely moving upright and appeared to be adapted for that type of mobility. I was particularly impressed by the size and strength of the back legs, the stripes on the lower half of the body and the canine-wolf-like head." Later in 1978 two park rangers were near the Cunningham Falls area when they encountered "a large hairy creature running on two legs".

Paranormalist Robin Swope relates an anecdote from a witness who says she was driving on Coxey Brown Road near Myersville, Maryland late in the summer of 2009 when she had an strange feeling. It was as if she was being watched. The road was lined with trees, she was on the outer edge of Gambrill State Park, and the forest was beginning to grow thicker. According to her, as she turned on Hawbottom Road, where her friend lived, the feeling became overwhelming. The hairs on the back of her neck rose in terror as she sensed the unseen eyes upon her. She wanted to stop the car and take her breath, she was afraid that she would veer off the road and hit a tree because she her nerves were getting so unsteady that she began to shake. But she knew that whatever was watching her, and following her was out there, and she took what little comfort she had by being safer inside her rust rotted car. Still, to prevent a wreck, she slowed down as she headed south, and that was when she saw the creature.

At first it was a blur to the right of her periphery vision. Something that was moving through the trees, a shadow that flickered as it went in and out of sight on the edge of her vision. It was a brown smear of color that popped out in contrast to the dull dark grey trees that she passed.

Whatever it was, it bobbed through the underbrush and between the trees to keep pace with her car. She thinks at the time, she was going around 25 miles per hour. She then slowed down once more to take a good look to her right, and make sure that she was not seeing things. As her car slowed to a crawl, the brown blurry smear of color seemed to bound out of the woods closer to the road. With a massive leap the hazy color became flesh as a huge dog-like animal on two legs emerged from the foliage.

The fangs are burned into her memory. Huge fangs from a mouth grimaced in anger and hate. She could feel the fangs as if they were ripping her skin while the creature stood there panting on the side of the road. Drool dripped from its huge mouth as she heard a loud growl, and she looked into the dark eyes. Darkness took up its entire eye, there was no white at all. It was if she was staring death and hell head on in dizzying madness.

Then it leaped, arms outstretched with claws grasping the wind. Instinctively she stepped on her gas pedal with all her might. The squeal of her tires seemed as if her car too was screaming in horror at the thing that emerged from the dark looming forest.

She did not look back. She didn't want to know if the thing was following her. She didn't feel the eyes upon her anymore. She was too shaken to really feel anything at all. When she made it to her friends house, she sat in the driveway shaking as she looked around to make sure the creature had not followed her there. The house was also in the woods, at the opposite side of the State Park. When she felt safe, she made a mad dash for her friend's door, and banged on it frantically.

He did not know what to make of her story. The witness knew he did not believe her. He had lived in the woods all his life, and had never encountered what she had seen. He assured her that it must have just been a dog, perhaps a rabid one at that. Her mind was playing tricks on her. But the young woman knew what she had seen that late summer day. It was no dog. It was something out of a horror movie come to life before her eyes. Though she told nobody what she felt it really was, she called it a werewolf. That is until after she did some research in the local college library and came up with the name that others had called it when they too saw the forest come alive. She had encountered the Dwayyo.

The 1772 Stockwell Poltergeist

The case of the Stockwell poltergeist is not commonly told nowadays, mainly because it took place in 1772. But it is a terrifying tale that was told in great detail for the time. I have added some commentary to the witness accounts (which is written in 18th century King's English):

"An authentic, candid, and Circumstantial Narrative of the astonishing Transactions at Stock-well, in the County of Surrey, on Monday and Tuesday. the 6th and 7th days of January, 1772 ; containing a Series of the most surprising and unaccountable Events that ever happened, which continued, from first to last, upward of twenty hours, and at different places : published with the consent and approbation of the family and other parties concerned, to authenticate which the original copy is signed by them.

Before we enter upon a description of the most extraordinary transactions that perhaps ever happened, we shall begin with an account of the parties who were principally concerned, and, in justice to them, give their characters, by which means the impartial world may see what credit is due to the following narrative :

The events, indeed, are of so strange and singular a nature, that we can not be at all surprised the public should be doubtful of the truth of them, more especially as there have been too many impositions of this sort ; but, let us consider, here are no sinister ends to be answered, no contributions to be wished for, nor would be accepted, as the parties are in reputable situations and good circumstances, particularly Mrs. Golding, who is a lady of an independent fortune : Richard howler and his wife might be looked upon as an exception to this assertion ; but, as their loss was trivial, they must he left out of the question, except so far as they appear corroborating evidences. Mr. Pan's maid lost nothing.

How or by what means these transactions were brought about, has never transpired: we have only to rest our confidence on the veracity of the parties, whose descriptions have been most strictly attended to, without the least deviation: nothing here offered is either exaggerated or diminished—the whole stated in the clearest manner, just as they occurred : as such only we lay them before the candid and impartial public."

The phenomenon centered upon a Mrs Golding at her farmhouse. Mrs. Golding, an elderly lady at Stockwell, in Surrey, at whose house the transactions began, was born in the same parish (Landreth), has lived in it ever since, and has always been well known and respected as a gentlewoman of unblemished honor and character.

Although the beginnings of the case suggested nothing more than a nuisance spirit that occasionally threw plates from the wall, something sinister was on the cards one particular day when Mrs Golding fainted.

"On Monday, January the 6th, 1772, about ten o'clock in the forenoon, as Mrs. Golding was in her parlor, she heard the china and glasses in the back kitchen tumble down and break; her maid came to her and told her the stone plates were falling from the shelf; Mrs. Golding went into the kitchen and saw them broke. Presently after, a row of plates from the next shelf fell down likewise, while she was there, and nobody near them ; this astonished her much, and while she was thinking about it, other things in different places began to tumble about, some of them breaking, attended with violent noises all over the house ; a clock tumbled down and the case broke ; a lantern that hung on the staircase was thrown down and the glass broken to pieces ; an earthen pan of salted beef broke to pieces and the beef fell about : all this increased her surprise and brought several persons about her, among whom was Mr. Rowlidge, a carpenter, who gave it as his opinion that the foundation was giving way and that the house was tumbling clown, occasioned by the too great weight of an additional room erected above : so ready are we to discover natural causes for everything ! But no such thing happened, as the reader will find ; for whatever was the cause, that cause ceased almost as soon as Mrs. Golding and her maid left any place, and Ibilowed them wherever they went. Mrs. Golding ran into Mr. Gresham's house, a gentleman living next door to her, where she fainted.

In the interim, Mr. Rowlidge and other persons were removing Mrs. Golding's effects from her house, for fear of the consequences he had prognosticated. At this time all was quiet ; Mrs. Golding's maid, remaining in the house, was gone up stairs, and when called upon several times to come down, for fear of the dangerous situation she was thought to be in, she answered very coolly, and after some time came down as deliberately, without any seeming fearful apprehensions.

Mrs. Pain was sent for from Brixton Causeway, and desired to come directly, as her aunt was supposed to be dead : this was the message to her. When Mrs. Pain came, Mrs. Golding was come to herself, but very faint.

Among the persons who were present was Mr. Gardner, a surgeon, of Clapham, whom Mrs. Pain desired to bleed her aunt, which he did. Mrs. Pain asked him if the blood should be thrown away : he desired it might not, as he would examine it when cold. These minute particulars would not be taken notice of, but as a chain to what follows. For the next circumstance is of a more astonishing nature than anything that had preceded it : the blood that was just congealed, sprang out of the basin upon the floor, and presently after the basin broke to pieces! This china basin was the only thing broke belonging to Mr. Gresham; a bottle of rum that stood by it broke at the same time.

Among the things that were removed to Mr. Gresham's, was a tray full of china, a japan bread-basket, some mahogany waiters, with some bottles of liquors, jars of pickles, &c., and a pier-glass, which was taken down by Mr. Saville (a neighbor of Mrs. Golding's) ; he gave it to one Robert Hames, who laid it on the grass-plat at Mrs. Gresham's : but, before he could put it out of his hands, some parts of the frame on each side flew off! It rained at that time ; Mrs. Golding desired it might be brought into the parlor, where it was put under a sideboard, and a dressing-glass along with it. It had not been there long, before the glasses and china which stood on the sideboard began to tumble about and fall down, and broke both the glasses to pieces. Mr. Saville and others being asked to drink a glass of wine or rum, both the bottles broke in pieces before they were uncorked !

Mrs. Golding's surprise and fear increasing, she (lid not know what to do, or where to go. Wherever she and her maid were, these strange, destructive circumstances followed her and how to help or free herself from them was not in her power or any other person's present. Her mind was one confused chaos, lost to herself and everything about her—drove from her own home, and afraid there would be no other to receive her. At last she left Mr. Gresham's and went to Mr. Mayling's, a gentleman at the next door; here she stayed about three quarters of an hour, during which time nothing happened. Her maid stayed at Mr. Gresham's to put up what few things remained unbroken of her mistress's, in a back apartment, when a jar of pickles that stood upon a table turned upside down ; then a jar of raspberry jam broke to pieces ; next two mal3′ogany waiters and a quadrille-box likewise broke in pieces.

Mrs. Pain, not choosing her aunt should stay too long at Mr. Mayling's, for fear of being troublesome, persuaded her to go to her house at Rush Common, near Brixton Causeway, where she would endeavor to make her as happy as she could, hoping by this time all was over, as nothing had happened at that gentle-man's house while she was there. This was about two o'clock in the afternoon.

Mr. and Miss Gresham were at Mr. Pain's house when Mrs. Pain, Mrs. Golding, and her maid, went there. It being about dinner-time, they all dined together; in the interim, Mrs. Golding's servant was sent to her house to see how things remained. When she returned, she told them nothing had happened since they left it. Some time after, Mr. Gresham and miss went home, everything remaining quiet at Mr. Pain's; but about eight o'clock in the evening a fresh scene began. The first thing that happened was, a whole row of pewter dishes, except one, fell from off a shelf to the middle of the floor, rolled about a little while, then settled ; and, what is almost beyond belief, as soon as they were quiet, turned upside down ! They were then put on the dresser, and went through the same a second time. Next fell a whole row of pewter plates from off the second shelf over the dresser to the ground, and, being taken up and put on the dresser one in another, they were thrown down again.

The next thing was, two eggs that were upon one of the pewter shelves, one of them flew off, crossed the kitchen, struck a cat on the head, and then broke in pieces.

Next, Mary Martin, Mrs. Pain's servant, went to stir the kitchen fire ; she got to the right-hand side of it, being a large chimney, as is usual in farmhouses. A pestle and mortar that stood nearer the left-hand end of the chimney-shelf, jumped about six feet on the floor ! Then went candlesticks and other brasses, scarcely anything remaining in its place. After this, the glasses and china were put down on the floor for fear of undergoing the same fate : they presently began to dance and tumble about, and then broke to pieces. A teapot that was among them flew to Mrs. Golding's maid's foot, and struck it."

A glass tumbler that was put on the floor jumped about two feet and then broke. Another that stood by it jumped about at the same time, but did not break till some hours after, when it jumped again, and then broke. A china howl that stood in the parlor jumped from the floor to behind a table that stood there. This was most astonishing, as the distance from where it stood was between seven and eight feet, but was not broke. It was put back by Richard Fowler to its place, where it remained some time, and then flew to pieces.

The next thing that followed was a mustard-pot, that jumped out of a closet and was broke. A single cup that stood upon the table (almost the only thing remaining) jumped up, flew across the kitchen, ringing like a bell, and then was dashed to pieces against the dresser. A candlestick that stood on the chimney-shelf flew across the kitchen to the parlor-door, at about fifteen feet distance. A teakettle under the dresser was thrown out about two feet ; another kettle, that stood at one end of the range, was thrown against the iron that is fixed to pre-vent children from falling into the fire. A tumbler with ruinand-water in it, that stood upon a waiter upon a table in the parlor, jumped about ten feet, and was broke. The table then fell down, and along with it a silver tankard belonging to Mrs. Golding—the waiter in which stood the tumbler, and a candleitick. A case-bottle then flew to pieces.

The next circumstance was, a ham that hung in one side of the kitchen-chimney raised itself from the hook and fell down to the ground. Some time after, another ham, that hung on the other side of the chimney, likewise underwent the same fate. Then a flitch of bacon, which hung up in the same chimney, fell down.

All the family were eye-witnesses to these circumstances, as well as other persons, some of whom were so alarmed and shocked, that they could not bear to stay, and were happy in getting away, though the unhappy family were left in the midst of their distresses. Most of the genteel families around were continually sending to inquire after them, and whether all was over or not. Is it not surprising that some among them had not the inclination and resolution to try to unravel this most intricate affair, at a time when it would have been in their power to have done so? There certainly was sufficient time for so doing, as the whole, from first to last, continued upward of twenty hours.

At all the times of action, Mrs. Golding's servant was walking backward and forward, in either the kitchen or parlor, or wherever some of the family happened to be. Nor could they get her to sit down five minutes together, except at one time for about half an hour toward the morning, when the family were at prayers in the parlor ; then all was quiet: but in the midst of the greatest confusion, she was as much composed as at any other time, and with uncommon coolness of temper advised her mistress not to be alarmed or uneasy, as she said these things could not be helped. Thus she argued, as if they were common occurrences, which must happen in every family.

This advice surprised and startled her mistress almost as much as the circumstances that occasioned it. For how can we suppose that a girl of about twenty years old (an age when female timidity is too often assisted by superstition) could re-main in the midst of such calamitous circumstances (except they proceed from causes best known to herself), and not be struck with the same terror as every other person was who was present? These reflections led Mr. Pain (and, at the end of the transactions, likewise Mrs. Golding) to think that she was not altogether so unconcerned as she appeared to be ; but, hitherto, the whole remains mysterious and unrivalled."

About ten o'clock at night, they sent over the way to Rich and Fowler, to desire he would come and stay with them. He came and continued till one in the morning, and was so ten-i. fled that he could remain no longer.

"As Mrs. Golding could not be persuaded to go to bed, Mrs. Pain at that time (one o'clock) made an excuse to go up stairs to her youngest child, under pretence of getting it to sleep, but she really acknowledges it was through fear, as she declares she could not sit up to see such strange things going on, as everything, one after another, was broke, till there was not above two or three cups and saucers remaining out of a considerable quantity of china, &c., which was destroyed to the amount of some pounds.

About five o'clock on Tuesday morning, Mrs. Golding went up to her niece, and desired her to get up, as the noises and destruction were so great, she could continue in the house no longer. At this time all the tables, chairs, drawers, &c., were tumbling about. When Mrs. Pain came down, it was amazing beyond all description. Their only security then was to quit the house, for fear of the same catastrophe as had been expected the morning before at Mrs. Golding's. In consequence of this resolution, Mrs. Golding and her maid went over the way to Richard Fowler's. When Mrs. Golding's maid had seen her safe to Richard Fowler's, she came back to Mrs. Pain, to help her to dress the children in the barn, where she had carried them for fear of the house falling. At this time all was quiet. They then went to Fowler's, and then began the same scene as had happened at the other places. It must be re-marked, all was quiet here as well as elsewhere, till the maid returned.

When they got to Mr. Fowler's, he began to light a fire in his back room. When done, he put the candle and candlestick upon a table in the fore-room. This apartment Mrs. Golding and her maid had passed through. Another candlestick, with a tits lamp in it, that stood by it, were both dashed together, and fell to the ground. A lantern, with which Mrs. Golding was lighted across the road, sprang from a hook to the ground, and a quantity of oil spilled on the floor. The last thing was, the basket of coals tumbled over, the coals rolling about the room."

The maid then desired Richard Fowler not to let her mistress remain there, as she said wherever she was the same things would Mow. In consequence of this advice, and fearing greater losses to himself, he desired she would quit his house ; but first begged her to consider within herself, for her own and the public's sake, whether or not she had been guilty of some atrocious crime, for which Providence was determined to pursue her on this side of the grave : for he could not help think-mg she was the object that was to be made an example to posterity, by the all seeing eye of Providence, for crimes which but. too often none but that Providence can penetrate, and by such means as these bring to light.

Thus was the poor gentlewoman's measure of affliction complete, not only to have undergone all which has been related, but to have added to it the character of a bad and wicked woman, when till this time she was esteemed as a most deserving person. In candor to Fowler, he could not be blamed. What could he do ? what. would any man have done that was so circumstanced ? Mrs. Golding soon satisfied him : she told him she would not stay in his house or any other person's, as her conscience was quite clear, and she could as well wait the will of Providence in her own house as in any other place what-ever; upon which she and her maid went home. Mr. Pain went with them. After they had got to Mrs. Golding's the last time, the same transactions once more began upon the remains that were left.

A nine-gallon cask of beer, that was in the cellar, the door being open, and no person near it, turned upside down. A pail of water, that stood on the floor, boiled like a put ! A box of candles fell from a shelf in the kitchen to the floor; they rolled out, but none were broke : and a round mahogany table over-set in the parlor.

"Mr. Pain then desired Mrs. Golding to send her maid for his wife to come to them. When she was gone, all was quiet Upon her return she was immediately discharged, and no dis turbances have happened since. This was between six and seven o'clock on Tuesday morning.

At Mrs. Golding's were broke the quantity of three pail. fuls of glass, china, &c. At Mrs. Pain's they filled two pails.

Thus ends the narrrative—a true, circumstantial, and faithful account of which we have laid before the public ; and have endeavored as much as possible, throughout the whole, to state onl! facts, without presuming to obtrude any opinion on them, If we have in part hinted anything that may appear unfavorable to the girl, it is not from a determination to charge her with the cause, right or wrong, but only from a strict adherence to truth, most sincerely wishing this extraordinary affair may be unravelled.

The above narrative is absolutely and strictly true, iii witness whereof we have set our hands this eleventh day of January, 1772:

New sonar hits in Loch Ness

There is no sign of the trademark elongated neck, or the signature green humps. But the experts believe this almost unfathomable sonar image could be a breakthrough in the hint for Nessie that began in earnest in 1934.

Surrounded by fish, the 'blip' has a girth of about 5ft, though there is no way of estimating its length as it was moving. The image was captured by the quick thinking skipper of a pleasure boat who took a picture of the reading while waiting for his customers at Urquhart Castle, in Inverness-shire. Marcus Atkinson, 42, knows Loch Ness like the back of his hand and spends every day on its waters — but said he had never seen anything like this before.

He added: It's very weird. It was obvious it wasn't a shoal of fish and it just kept getting bigger and bigger. This thing is completely different from anything I've seen before.' Mr Atkinson, of Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire, was idling in the bay when he saw the unusual sonar image. He said: 'it's one of those moments where you just think, "What on earth is that?" I grabbed my mobile phone and took a picture before it disappeared of the screen. it's all very bizarre.' Mr Atkinson's picture shows a cross-section of the loch, with the boat itself at the top right of the picture.

The bright green area on the bottom right of the sonar screen is the bottom of the loch, which rises as the boat gets closer to shore. The small green ﬂashes scattered across the monitor are deepwater fish. But the part of the picture that is exciting interest is the long, thin streak - that looks a little bit like a propeller - between the 20 and 25 metre depth markers. The measurements show it is about 5ft thick - but there is no way of telling how long it is as, if the object was following the boat, it would show up on every 'blip' of the sonar.

Expert Nessie hunter Steve Feltham said: 'This is a sonar contact that defies all explanation — it's a huge object. 'it's fascinating, because the camera hasn't an imagination — it just shows what's there. - lochnessmystery

San Diego Co., California - 9/14/2011 - unedited: Twice in the last month as I have been driving North on Interstate-5 between the Del Mar Race Track & Encinitas, CA (San Diego county) I noticed a stationary object in the sky - I would say at first I thought it was a private jet heading west, just over land fall close to Solana Beach I would say it was also at a pretty high elevation. It was a sunny day with blue skies & some cloud.

As there are several marine bases in the county (specifically Coronado, Pendleton & Miramar) I then wondered if it was either some kind of military aircraft, blimp/balloon or a private plane from Carlsbad airport. As my Grandfather was in the RAF I have always liked spotting military planes & helicopters with my Mum & brother - and especially living close to Camp Pendleton when driving near Oceanside & the base you often see pilots in training with helicopters & jets running up and down the coast.

What caught my eye specifically about this one was that the object was completely white and looked almost like a paper plane at first glance (because of its white appearance), upon looking again the basic outline looked like two upside down, but connected pyramid-type shapes. The object on both occasions did not appear to be moving, as I kept expecting it to get smaller into the distance with perhaps a jet stream as it flew out over the ocean. I ascertained it was not a military craft because of its bright white appearance. I also then noticed it appeared to be 'hovering' or just suspended in the sky with no visible sign of any emissions or propulsion.

The traffic flow was reasonably light because it was around midday/1pm - so I kept an eye on it as best I could because I was confused as to why it wasn't moving & what it could be. I distinctly kept an eye on it for several miles and only after I passed a bluff (by Del Mar Heights Rd) I lost sight of it for a few seconds, and when I got a clear view of the coastline again the object disappeared from the sky. I thought nothing I know of in aviation can jet off that fast without leaving a trail surely??

Again last week on the 14th I saw the same shaped object again as I was driving north in I-5, I can't recall if I saw it in the same area of sky but it seemed to be in the sky around Del Mar/Solana Beach area... Again it was not moving and disappeared after a few miles. I know for 100% that it was not a cloud formation, as the outline was very clearly defined in my eyes. It was also a relatively nice day with blue skies, this is what caught my eye in the first place - the white shape outlined but the blue sky.

The first time I saw it I was curious and surprised, as it was very unusual to me - sadly I can't recall the exact date. The second time I was like NO WAY THERE IT IS AGAIN!! And tried not to take my eyes off it, but as I was driving on the freeway had to be careful also. I mentioned it over the phone to my brother also because I wanted to see what he thought it might of been.

It wasn't until I read on (url remove to FI box) CMS 09/20/11 00:19 cst flg about the Notre Dame game being disrupted by an almost identical object sighted & then again this article -

- that made me want to contribute what I have seen in this area recently. I have never before seen anything like this, and although I believe we cannot be the only intelligent life in the universe have never actively read or researched "UFO" sightings.

Unless this was some kind of secret military machine I know exactly what I saw was not normal. I am of sound mind, body & vision.

Similar to this video (which was also filmed in San Diego county) only what I witnessed was in the sky for longer period of time & the shape was more pronounced with the two triangular 'peaks' (not seen in this clip but wanted to portray the contrast of white/blue)-

Close encounter in Arkansas

10-15-1997: While camping on the Caddo River in Glenwood,Arkansas, I observed two lights on the other side of the river,coming down the hill toward the river.They appeared to be car or truck headlights,white and evenly spaced. As they got closer to the river, I observed the 2 lights change to 3 lights. As these lights approached the river,my view was slightly blocked by a row of trees,but I could still make out their direction very close to the river.As these lights appeared to enter the river,they changed from 3 bright lights to 6 much smaller lights and changed from white to red.The lights were coming down the river toward a bend in the river about 50 yards away from me. As the lights made the bend in the river, I observed these lights to be some sort headgear being worn by 3 small, maybe 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall beings.They were covered in a sort of silver suit and had helmets on which there lights were attached-1 on either side- to their helmets.They were walking 3 abreast, and the 1 in the middle had what appeared to be a sort of wane which, as he stuck it in the water would make a sort of buzzing sound.The 3 beings were talking but no language I could understand.As they came closer,I got up and approahed them,but when I got within maybe 20-30 yards from them,they turned back up the river and quickly disappeared. I have no explanation as to what these "things" were or what they were doing. - MUFON CMS

More naysayers questioning ancient astronauts

I find it incredible and frightening that a worldwide distributed television channel that bills itself as 'The History Channel' can broadcast such rubbish as Ancient Aliens. If it were an entertainment programme, I'd have fewer worries (although it would still make me cross); it is the implied authority of the channel ('The History Channel', not just any old 'History Channel') that makes the broadcast of this series so potentially damaging, as we saw in the reaction of the forum poster quoted above. A channel that is making claims for its authoritative status, which offers educational resources, has a responsibility not to mislead its viewers (no doubt its executives think of them as 'customers'). That responsibility is one that all makers and broadcasters of supposedly factual television have, but one that few of them take seriously: the responsibility to check facts.

Do read the whole post, as it's a nice one-stop shop for debunking the "ancient astronaut" nonsense that's been peddled around for as long as I can remember. And I'm in agreement that ideally, the History Channel shouldn't run stuff like this and instead devote itself to more stuff about, say, history. At least, the parts of history that don't involve alien visitors.

That said, I'm a little more sympathetic to the History Channel. The fact of the matter is, this is the kind of program that sells. People watch it (this is the second season) and so it makes money. Likewise, I'm sure the History Channel has taking to peddling its reality series for the same reason: they make more money than documentaries about history. It's not just the history channel, either. One of the SyFy Channels biggest hits is the laughable show Ghost Hunters. A&E has a number of quality shows, but they also have a big hit in the reality show Parking Wars (a show that apparently has lots of viewers, though I've never met one in real life).

Much as we might pine for more historical documentaries on the History Channel, the fact of the matter is that most historical documentaries are boring: Narrator narrates over photos, paintings and or video. Cut to talking head #1. Cut to talking head #2. Back to narrating over pictures. If the show has the budget, they might do some re-enactments of a battle scene. There – that's your standard historical documentary. And I'll bet when the History Channel was running more of those documentaries, you weren't watching it then, either – were you?

It doesn't have to be that way – since I got my Netflix streaming subscription, I've watched a lot of documentaries that are both fascinating and entertaining. I think there's a market for better educational programming. But I can imagine network executives during a recession being leery about experimental documentary programming. TV is a tough business, and it makes more sense to go with reality shows and paranormal crap because that's what sells.

When will that change? When a few documentary series that tell true facts and get people to watch come out. There are a few out there – Mythbusters, of course, is the best show about scientific principles out there. Plus it has explosions. Deadliest Warrior has a great hook for teaching about military history and weaponry. But off the top of my head I can't think of too many more, and what's more those two shows aren't that easily replicated.

What educational TV really needs is an entertaining, educational show that appeals to adults and whose format can be replicated. The Project Runway of educational TV, if you will. Then the copycats will come, and things will change. Until then, I can't fault TV studios too much for going with guaranteed moneymakers. Because frankly, if they didn't, they'd be fired and replaced with someone who would. - Forbes

A plant that sows its own seeds discovered

Scientists have discovered a tiny plant which they say bows down and sows its own seeds.

The dainty, inch-high plant with pink-and-white flowers was found growing in the backyard of a local plant collector in rural northeastern Bahia, Brazil, one of the world's most biologically diverse areas.

The strange behaviour of the plant caught the attention of a handyman working for the plant collector, Alex Popovkin, who believed it was a new species.

A team of scientists from Rutgers University, the State University at Feira de Santana in Bahia, and Western Carolina University then collaborated to confirm that the plant was indeed a new species, a website reported.

"It is very easy to think we have found and described most plant species of the world already, but this discovery shows that there are so [many] left out there without name and recognition," Lena Struwe, a Rutgers University specialist in plants of the Loganiaceae family, said.

The researchers found only a few minuscule plants in Popovkin's field during the first year. The plants died in the dry season, only to reappear in the same spots at the beginning of the rain season.

This was due to the plant's unique propagation trait, a characteristic known as geocarpy, the scientists said.

When the plant's fruits form, the plant slowly bends its small, fruiting branches down, depositing the seed capsules carefully onto the ground — and sometimes burying them in the soft cover of moss.

Geocarpy, which is also found with peanut plants, ensures that the seeds will grow into new plants near the mother plant during the following season, the researchers reported in the taxonomic journal PhytoKeys.

Due to the plant's dexterity, the team decided to name the new species Spigelia genuflexa. - discoveryon

Underwater UFO Base In Lake Erie?

There has been a recent UFO sighting near Erie, Pa and out over Lake Erie that has people asking if there is an underwater UFO base in the lake.

It was approximately 9-910pm. My neighbor and his friend knocked on my door and started to tell me about these abnormal lights they saw in the sky. Then we saw one orangeish light in the sky. It was North/North West from my house, so it appeared to be above Lake Erie.

The light was visible for about a minute. It appeared to be moving west(left in the sky) slightly, the light started to fade a little bit, then completely disappeared. During this time the light moved up and down slightly. The light was orange, but didn't appear to be a fireball. It was not making any sounds that we could hear.

My neighbor and his friend then told me that maybe 4-5 minutes before, they stepped outside their house to smoke. They saw 6 orange lights (like the one I saw). The lights appeared to be north/north west (again appearing to be above Lake Erie) They ran into their front yard to get a better look. The six lights appeared to be in some sort of formation, moving together. During this time multiple car alarms in our neighbor hood alarmed (I heard these while I was inside my house) The car alarms were on different streets. After about a minute or two, they came and knocked on my door, that is when I saw the one light I previously mentioned.

When I first saw the object, I wasn't sure what it was, planes usually appear higher in the sky. Also I've never seen a plane with an orange light like that. I really couldn't think of any logical explanations, especially after the story my neighbor and his friend told me of seeing six lights. We all found it to be slightly odd that there were a number of car alarms that had gone off as well. I have no clue what it was, but it was definitely out of the ordinary. - MUFON CMS

Our friend Pastor Robin Swope has posted details of a conversation he had with the witness at The Paranormal Pastor. Robin had discussed some of the previous sightings over nearby areas of Lake Erie during his most recent appearance on 'Beyond the Edge' radio. In fact, he devotes a chapter to this phenomena in his latest book Eerie Erie: Tales of the Unexplained from Northwest Pennsylvania

Robin states "Recently places on the western part of the lake such as Sandusky and Cleveland have been hotbeds of UFO activity and simular lights have been filmed, making them a Youtube sensation. These UFOs have been investigated by world famous UFO researchers and even the focus of such cable television shows such as "UFO Hunters" and "UFO Files". Cleveland ufologist Aaron Clark in the March 8, 2007 Cleveland Plain Dealer declares that "Some believe there's a UFO base on the bottom of the lake."

After compiling incidents from MUFON, eyewitnesses and other UFO databases, there has been an alarming amount of diverse UFO sightings above and below the surface of Lake Erie within the past decade. Does Lake Erie play host to some sort of underwater UFO/USO base? Something is happening below its murky waves, something unexplained."
