Searching For Ireland's Banshee Posted: 25 Feb 2011 12:12 PM PST The Destination Truth team will be searching for Ireland's infamous Banshee in a four-hour live event on St. Patrick's Day, Thursday March 17 at 7/6c. The Banshee, from the Irish bean-sídhe ("woman of the síde" or "woman of the fairy mounds") is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. Her Scottish counterpart is the bean shìth. According to tradition, the Banshee can only cry for five major Irish families: the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, the O'Gradys and the Kavanaghs. Intermarriage has since extended this select list. Individuals have described the Irish Banshee in numerous ways. Many describe this mythical creature as a young, beautiful woman. Then, there are some that describe the Banshee as a matron. In some tales, the figure who first appears to be a Banshee is later revealed to be the Irish battle goddess, the Morrígan. The hag may also appear as a washer-woman who cleans the blood stained clothes of those who are about to die. Although not always visible, her mourning call is heard, usually at night when someone is about to die and usually near woodlands. The Banshee may also appear in a variety of other forms, such as that of a crow, hare and weasel, most any animal associated in Ireland with witchcraft. Banshees are frequently described as dressed in white or grey, often having long, fair hair which they brush with a silver comb. In 1437, King James I of Scotland was approached by an Irish seeress or banshee who foretold his murder at the instigation of the Earl of Atholl. This is an example of the banshee in human form. There are records of several human banshees or prophetesses attending the great houses of Ireland and the courts of local Irish kings. The Irish Banshee, according to the people of Ireland, may come in the form of one of many different animals. This is partly due to the fact that the actual female version of the Banshee is not always seen in that form, however, several animals have been said to emit the same sounds as the mythical creature makes when forewarning of tragedy. This sound is called the "Mourning Call". In some cases, no animal or female figure is seen, but the call can be heard coming from the dark, mysterious depths of the forests located throughout Ireland. The Banshee of Ireland is a very interesting legend. All throughout history, there have been accounts regarding the sightings of this mythical creature. Is she real? There is no physical evidence apart from witness accounts and tales passed from one generation to another, but for those in Ireland, this is a very real mythical creature. For the rest of us, it is truly one of the world's greatest unsolved mysteries.
One of the Banshee Legends There was an Irish gentleman who had a beautiful daughter, strong and healthy, and a splendid horsewoman. She always followed the hounds, and her appearance at the hunt attracted unbounded admiration, as no one rode so well or looked so beautiful. One evening there was a ball after the hunt, and the young girl moved through the dance with the grace of a fairy queen. But that same night a voice came close to the father's window, as if the face were laid close to the glass, and he heard a mournful lamentation and a cry; and the words rang out on the air--"In three weeks death; in three weeks the grave--dead--dead--dead!" Three times the voice came, and three times he heard the words; but though it. was bright moonlight, and he looked from the window over all the park, no form was to be seen. Next day, his daughter showed symptoms of fever, and exactly in three weeks, as the Ban-Sidhe had prophesied, the beautiful girl lay dead. The night before her death soft music was heard outside the house, though no word was spoken by the spirit-voice, and the family said the form of a woman crouched beneath a tree, with a mantle covering her head, was distinctly visible. But on approaching, the phantom disappeared, though the soft, low music of the lamentation continued till dawn. Then the angel of death entered the house with soundless feet, and he breathed upon the beautiful face of the young girl, and she rested in the sleep of the dead, beneath the dark shadows of his wings. Thus the prophecy of the Banshee came true, according to the time foretold by the spirit-voice. The Scream of the Banshee Ireland's Infamous Banshee - Destination Truth Live : New Season Join Josh's team and special guests as they search for Ireland's infamous banshee in a four hour live event on St. Patrick's Day. Thursday March 17 at 7/6c. The Banshee - Pagan Ireland The Banshee "Who sits upon the heath forlorn, With robe so free and tresses torn? Anon she pours a harrowing strain, And then she sits all mute again! Now peals the wild funeral cry Another Banshee Legend In about the middle of the nineteenth century lived the Reverend Charles Bunworth of Co. Cork. Mr. Bunworth became deathly ill. His wife was not too worried because it looked like his health was improving. A servant of the household knew his master was going to die. He heard the dreaded wail along with several others. He tells his story; "As I came through the glen at Ballybeg, she was along with me screeching and keening, and clapping her hands, by my side every step of the way, with her long white hair falling about her shoulders, and I could hear her repeat the master's name every now and then as plain as ever I heard it. When I came to the old abbey, she parted from me there, and turned into the pigeon field next to the berrin ground, and folding her cloak about her, down she sat under the tree that was struck by lightning, and began keening so bitterly that it went through one's heart to hear it. Mrs. Bunworth dismissed this as superstition because her husband's health was getting better. A few nights later a low moaning accompanied by the sound of clapping was heard outside of Mr. Bunworth's window. Two men visiting the house immediately ran outside to find the source of the sound. They found nothing and heard only silence. Meanwhile the people still in the house kept hearing the wailing and moaning and clapping. This continued for hours. All the while Mr. Bunworth began slipping away. He was dead by the morning. This just goes to show you that once someone has heard a banshee, death is not far behind. Why the Legends? It is believed that the myth of the Banshee developed due to the Irish tradition of the lament; women would sing a lament for the dead at funerals, and for some in the village, this song would carry through the air and become the first signal that someone had died. These funeral singers were known as "keeners", and their services were highly prized. From the natural honoring of the dead, the legend of the Banshee began. As time passed, the myth of the wailing Irish spirit became more colorful and supernatural. | ||
Fortean / Alternative News: Family Abductions, Alchemy Comeback and BTE Radio Guest Rev. Tim Shaw Posted: 25 Feb 2011 01:36 PM PST Family Abductions - Seeking Help! MUFON CMS - North Carolina: My wife and children as well as two other family members complain of having the same dream where they are all in a large room and can see each other but are unable to communicate. The next day they all contact each other and describe the same things to each other. There are unexplained marks on my wife and children and they bleed. They even complain about having the same type of test performed using the same type of instrument in similar locations. We are scared to death and have been trying to contact John Kledis but have been unsuccessful. I spoke by phone to someone at the MUFON Office in California and was instructed to contact Mr. Kledis. We need someone to either debunk this or help us to understand what has happened and continues to occur. These things do not like my dog and they know that I have weapons. My children have drawn pictures depicting my wife being pulled aboard a craft within some type of beam while I attempt to prevent it from happening. We all have specific areas on our bodies that vibrate occasionally. Most of us have unexplained nose bleeds. You have no idea how helpless it makes me feel to have my children tell me what they think is happening to them and for me to not to be able to make it stop. If I can get to my weapons the next time they are at my house I WILL have as many of these bastards to study as I can empty my gun into. And I hope they have a soul and I hope they go to hell pissing gas. They are not nice to us and frankly we do not deserve this. We need somebody to help us. Either prove to us that all concerned are having some type of ESP dream at the same time on the same night or help us to deal with this and tell us what to do. Contact me at or ###### preferrably at #######. This may not be the proper place to seek assistance but I cannot get in touch with John Kledis. PLEASE FOR GOD'S SAKE HELP US or give this information to someone who can. We are either at home or at a new construction site that we protect when this happens to us. NOTE: to the family...please contact Spirit Rescue International or contact this blog. We can help with non-terrestrial entity visitations and infestations...as well as spiritual possession/attachment/haunting experiences. SRI has dealt with these alien entities in previous investigations. ********** Alchemy is making a comeback InsideScience - No, wizards haven't learned how to transmute lead into gold and they haven't found any rejuvenating elixir of life. But the scholars who write the history of science and technology no longer lump alchemy in with witchcraft as a pseudo-science. Instead they see alchemy as the proper precursor to modern chemistry. The modern word "alchemy" comes from the Arabic word "al kemia," which incorporated a spectrum of knowledge of chemical properties and practices from ancient times. Chemist and historian Lawrence Principe of Johns Hopkins University in Maryland believes that the hardworking alchemists of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, a period stretching across the 14th to the 17th centuries, were defamed by being lumped in with charlatans of the 19th century -- quacks often depicted wearing eccentric costumes and casting spells. "We're in an alchemical revolution," said Principe during a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in February. Principe said that just in the past 30 years articles about alchemy were being accepted into Isis, one of the leading journals devoted to the history of science. Before that a prohibition on alchemical subjects had been in place. The reason for this change is that historians are now recognizing the huge role alchemists had in producing valuable things, even if the alchemists never succeeded in turning lead into gold. By the way, making new gold was of great concern to kings since it would have interfered with the valuation of coins. This is why transmutation was considered a crime -- and why alchemists often had to do their research in secret. Alchemists did something more important than make new gold. They were instrumental in the development of many technologies during pre-modern times in Europe. For example, alchemists could be considered as an early form of industrial researcher. William Newman of the University of Indiana points out that alchemists "integrated a host of pursuits that can be loosely labeled 'chemical technologies' with an experimental practice that was linked to various theories about the nature and operations of minerals and metals." Newman provides plenty of examples. Alchemists, he says, were active in assaying metals, refining salts, making dyes and pigments, making glass and ceramics, artificial fertilizers, perfumes, and cosmetics. An alchemists' shop was often the place in a town where you would go for medicine. Even today in many parts of Europe you go to "the chemist," for medicine, rather than to a "drug store." Principe said that alchemists perfected the process of distillation, in which a mixed substance is boiled in such a way as to separate out one component by letting a vapor collect in a portion of the apparatus where it can be drawn off. Distillation is of course well known as the means of making spirits like whiskey. But it was also used by alchemists to make powerful acids, which in turn were important for a variety of industrial purposes, such as for separating metals from their ores. The career of Robert Boyle illustrates the new, more respectful, view of alchemy. Boyle was long considered to be the first major modern chemist, one whose quantitative and careful laboratory practice made him the supposed antithesis of alchemy. But some 17th century documents, fully interpreted by Principe for the first time, show that Boyle was an avid alchemy practitioner. So was the man often cited as the father of modern physics, Isaac Newton. ********** Father 'barbecued wife and fed her to children' metro - Benoit Piet, a father of six, has admitted digging up his dead wife, barbecuing her body and then feeding it to his children in a bizarre bid to escape a murder charge. Mr Piet told a court it was time to stop the lies after previously claiming his wife committed suicide. In front of his two girls and four boys, aged 12 to 20, the 42-year-old said: 'I promise to tell the truth to my children. A court is a good place to do it after telling so many lies.' Police believe he murdered wife Adeline in 2006 after she asked for a divorce. He told officers then she had run off, sparking a nationwide hunt. Two years later, he was interviewed again and said she had hanged herself at their home in St Malo, Normandy. 'I found my wife hanging in the garage. So that I wasn't accused of murder, I buried her in the garden,' he told police. 'In May 2008, I dug the body up and burned the remains in the barbeque in the garden.' Piet later changed his story again to claim she had been murdered by two strangers before reverting to the suicide theory. He appeared in court on Wednesday in Ille-et-Vilaine, in northern France, charged with murder. He has admitted his wife died during a drunken domestic dispute but stopped short of saying he killed her. The case continues. ********** BTE Radio Welcomes the Rev. Posted: 25 Feb 2011 12:17 PM PST For several years I have kept a log of cryptid stories that have been forwarded to me or that I've found on the internet. None have fascinated me more than those pertaining to large flying humanoids...in particular, the Mothman. The following are a few I recently found as well as a review by Sonya Harvey of the new DVD Eyes of the Mothman. It was a normal day, around 5:00 PM, when I had gone outside and looked over to the line of trees across the street from where my mother lives, which is in York County, PA. I had noticed a large, black shape sitting in one of the trees. It had started to shift from side to side as a parrot does on a branch. It stretched out it's wings and made a loud, screeching sound, like that of a woman screaming. I had become frightened, but stayed to look as I had no idea what it was. It had flown straight up and went in the direction I was looking until it was no more than a blur, for I had bad eyesight. This was in 1998, and I am not making this up. It had a 7 foot wing span, had no visible hands, but had arms. It also had thick, trunklike legs. It's head was smallish, and had no beak, so it could not have been a bird. It had no claws or talons on it's feet, but it looked as though it was watching me as I watched it, studying me to see if I was any threat, as does a cat. I now live in fear as if it may come and find me for telling it's secret. ----- Near Pittsburgh, PA - We were heading back from my friend's house late at night when all of a sudden my Dad slammed on the brakes. I asked him why but he was silent, then I looked out of the windshield and I saw bloody lambs and sheep being tossed around like rag dolls. It was as if they were trying to scream bloody murder in sheep language, then silence again...then out in the middle of nowhere I saw a big brown feathery figure appear as it tore the insides out of one of the sheep...then it peered into the windshield. It stared at me with those big blood-red eyes. My dad floored it! It took off following our car but then the creature saw the lights of the city, turned & backed off. Those were the scariest five miniutes ever of my life. ----- I am a veteran of the Army. I was on my way for an appointment 250 miles away in Albuquerque, NM. The man driving me name was named Gabriel, who volunteered for veterans that can't drive. We were on Navajo land about 5 or 5:30 am. Hovering above the windshield (front) was an obvious strange figure of a man as he hovered for several minutes, then flew from the front of car to the back and disappeared. I didn't say anything until Gabriel said "did you see what I saw?" I said I was waiting for you to say something, we described the same thing to each other. Much later we drove back the same way and a small gas station was opened, and I described to the clerk and several mechanics there what we saw. They said they'd heard sightings about UFOs, lights and strange creatures on the ground but not what I had described to them. ----- The following is a review of the new DVD "Eyes of the Mothman" from Virgil Films. It explains the odd events that obsessed the small community of Point Pleasant, WV, during the period 1966-67. The documentary covers the curse of Chief Cornstalk, MIB, a mutated Sandhill Crane, UFOs and the Silver Bridge collapse. Regardless, there seems to be a lot of unanswered questions. New 'Mothman' documentary raises more questions than answers by Sonya Harvey mysanantonio - Eyes of the Mothman attempts to explain the mystery surrounding the infamous winged birdman that terrorized the small religious community of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, a story known as The Mothman Prophesies. The Hollywood movie, featuring Richard Gere as an inquiring reporter (loosely based on the real-life author John Keel who dove head-first into UFO conspiracies) and Laura Linney as a police officer responding to strange middle-of-the-night phone calls (loosely based on the real on-scene journalist during the night terrors of Mothman), attempts to piece together the fateful events that took place in Point Pleasant from 1966-1967 that resulted in the death of 46 people. In spite of the Hollywood hype, this new documentary actually works to break apart the historical events, piece by piece, and in an attempt to cover all possible angles of the still-unsolved mystery, it at least succeeds in formulating every feasible explanation one could fathom — apart from Mothman being a distant cousin of Mothra that is. It begins with the Curse of Chief Cornstalk. (Say what? We can't make this stuff up, folks.) See, there was this famed battle that took place in Point Pleasant, and as the story goes, Cornstalk and the English newcomers were in peace negations' after the battle between the two groups led to a draw. Unfortunately for Cornstalk, some of the Native Americans weren't too keen on the so-called peace talks and they ambushed two newbies enjoying an afternoon hunt. This led to Cornstalk being murdered point blank by the Englishmen who held him in contempt. It's said Cornstalk's last words were to utter a curse over Point Pleasant and anyone who calls it home. At least that's what the locals would have you believe. (Remember the Silver Bridge collapse of 1966, anyone?) Preposterous? Maybe, but how about the chemical mutations set upon the land where the McClintic Wildlife Preserve now stands. Sure, it once housed multiple TNT and bomb-making warfare bunkers put into play during WWII, through the chemical leaks didn't come about until the 1980s when teenagers and thrill-seekers rummaged the land as their own personal playground. Needless to say it should come as no surprise that the scientific community, in an attempt to explain the unnatural or unknown, coined newspaper headlines that read: Mothman is nothing more than mutated Sandhill Crane. Really? A mutated Sandhill Crane? You don't say? Even weirder still it the appearance of the Men In Black and a possibly sub-human who simply referred to himself as Indrid Cold. Granted, UFOs were bound to play apart in the story of a winged birdman flying through the skies, but the story of local resident Woodrow Derenberger and his meeting with Cold is the weirdest explanation yet, and as it turns out, the story can be corroborated. You see, Cold, dressed in a head-to-toe black suit with big weird bug eyes and a smile streaked across his face, spoke to Derenberger using telepathy and told him of fateful events that would later come true. When more locals swore UFOs could been seen hovering over their barns and reported missing dogs, more Men In Black would show up, not asking questions, but rather telling the towns folk to keep their mouth shut about what they'd seen. Still, no one could explain the sight of a seven-foot-tall birdman with grayish skin, big red menacing eyes and wings that spanned ten feet, who could fly straight up into the air without so much as a single flutter, and odder still, no one could explain why the witnesses were plagued with symptoms like swollen pinkeye, sleeplessness and reoccurring nightmares. Yeah, maybe it was the Curse of Cornstalk, or a mutated Sandhill Crane or UFOs, but we can assure you that it definitely wasn't a distant cousin of Mothra.
