The signed photograph, believed to depict the ghost of a young girl, is expected to fetch a substantial figure when it goes under the hammer at Fraser's Autographs next month.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's ghostly photograph, believed to have been 'taken with one exposure only', is purported to be the ghost of a young girl sitting on the lap of a young man.

The 2.5 by 4.5 inch 'spirit' photograph is signed clearly, in full across the bottom margin.

The photograph is being auctioned by London-based Fraser's Autographs, part of the renowned philatelic group Stanley Gibbons, on 17th June 2010 in their postal auction, PA76.

Auctioneer Olivia Odell commented that 'though the jury is still out on whether the photograph shows a genuine ghost, it remains, none-the-less, quite chilling to look at'.

"It is certainly a completely unique piece signed by the great man himself".

Conan Doyle's most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, was strictly a man of scientific reasoning and logic, though following the death of his wife in 1906 Conan Doyle became fascinated by spiritualism. Convinced of the existence of fairies and spirits he became a member of The Ghost Club, founded in Cambridge in 1862.

The paranormal photograph is expected to reach at least £1,200 in the postal auction at 399 Strand, London, on Thursday 17th June.

Most Lunar Rocks Given to Other Nations Missing

chron - Neil Armstrong took his biggest step for all mankind, and as if to underscore the point his employer decided to share a small token of his lunar booty with nations of the planet. It was not much, at least by size, but the offering of small chunks of lunar rock to the head of every government was a symbolic gesture intended to promote goodwill.

More than 130 nations received inscribed plaques adorned with small replicas of their official flags — which had made the trip to the moon and back — along with a thumb-sized bit of black igneous rock beneath a Lucite shield. In mineralogical terms, the pebbles had no real value. But there was no beating them for rarity.

Years later, the fate of those Apollo 11 moon rocks, as well as a second goodwill offering in 1973 that followed the Apollo 17 mission, is in many cases an embarrassing mystery. Some likely are in archives and cannot easily be located. But others have disappeared with deposed dictators, aging government officials or crooked former bureaucrats. Every once in a while, one shows up in the shadowy recesses of illicit private commerce accompanied by a multimillion-dollar price tag and a no-questions proviso.

Joe Gutheinz, a retired investigator with NASA's Office of Inspector General, has spent a fair portion of his adult life chasing missing moon rocks, determined to restore them to their rightful owners. The 54-year-old Gutheinz, who teaches an online class in investigative techniques for the University of Phoenix, has repeatedly used the missing rocks as an assignment for his students. They have been able to determine that 90 or so nations cannot account for the precious pebbles.

"The moon rocks are disappearing," Gutheinz said. "Most of the ones that are now truly gone will probably be gone forever."

It's been a fascinating pursuit, and mostly fruitless. But every so often he managed a hit. In 1998, for instance, he set up a successful sting operation to recover the moon rock from Honduras.

"We formed a company called John's Estate Sales and took out a quarter-page ad in USA Today saying 'Moon Rocks Wanted,' " Gutheinz recalled.

A response led to a website where pictures of the plaque and rock were posted. After two months of prompting, the owner went to Miami.

"He thought we might be undercover agents from the beginning," Gutheinz said, "but the lure of $5 million was too much."

More recently, Gutheinz played a role in flushing out the owner of the goodwill moon rock that was intended to go to the government of Cyprus in 1973. The official presentation never happened because of the sectarian strife that wracked the island nation at the time. Rather than return the rock to NASA or the U.S. State Department for safekeeping until order was restored, an American diplomat kept it for years, then gave it to one of his children, Gutheinz said.

The world's leading authority on space-related artifacts, Robert Pearlman, reported to NASA in 2003 that the Cyprus rock had been offered for sale.

Pearlman believes that the diplomat who originally had it probably had no ill intent in keeping it. Embassy personnel had been evacuated from the island, and he may have simply been at a loss at whom to give it to, he said. Apparently, later governments of the divided nation were not aware that such a gift had been offered.

Last September, Gutheinz made a formal request for a Congressional inquiry into the missing rock and why it had not been turned over to the government of Cyprus. He said he had two reasons for the request.

"First, to get our government to commit to recovering the moon rock, and by publicizing the inquiry place pressure on the person who had the moon rock to do the right thing and turn it over to either Cyprus or the U.S.," he said. "Chess is one of my favorite games, and I simply positioned my chess pieces. He started to realize he needed to give it back."

The rock's owner, who has not been named publicly, recently told NASA that he is willing to return the goodwill plaque. Now, Gutheinz is on the trail of two other rocks, one stolen from a museum in Malta in 2004 and one that had been in the possession of the late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

With the help of Gutheinz, Pearlman, who operates the website www.collectspace.com, put together a list of nations and the status of their moon rocks. In an e-mail, he said that a fair number of the rocks currently unaccounted for will, in time, be located in archives or storage. Unlike Gutheinz, Pearlman is optimistic of the eventual return of many of those that were purloined.

"Unlike in the art world, for example, where there are reports of collectors content with possessing the art for their eyes only or as investment pieces, those who tend to desire space artifacts, and specifically moon rocks, are often keen to show off their prized pieces," Pearlman said.

Although Gutheinz no longer has an official role to play in chasing down the lunar rocks, he has no plan to stop.

"We gave them away, and they weren't taken care of like they should have been," he said. "They belong to the people."

NOTE: After digging into this story a bit, I discovered that 90 of the 130 presentation pieces of lunar rock given to foreign governments are missing and most likely stolen by the person who was in charge of the country at the time. Speaking at one of his regular Cameron Direct public meetings, he pledged to be "open and frank" with any government knowledge about close encounters.

The Conservative leader was responding to a question about apparent government cover-ups of UFO activity.

Mr Cameron joked: "I'm convinced we've been visited by aliens - one of them is trade secretary Peter Mandelson."

Intelligent life

At the meeting in Tynemouth, North Tyneside, he was questioned about a spate of mysterious incidents.

A member of the audience asked: "In July last year the respected scientist and astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth man to walk on the moon, spoke on a British radio station.

"He said the American government had had contact with extra terrestrials on multiple occasions and that these were ongoing.

"He spoke about the Roswell event in 1947 where wreckage of a downed UFO was recovered and found to contain alien bodies.

"He said this event was real but was covered up by the government for many years.

"Do you agree with me that the British people have a right to know if we have been visited, and if so, when you become prime minister will you seek to lift the veil of secrecy and give the public the truth that they deserve?

UFO guarantee

Mr Cameron replied: "I have no idea there is intelligent life out there and no idea whether any of the sightings which have taken place or whether any incidents which have taken place have any basis in truth.

"When people have looked at the Roswell incident, or when people have looked at pictures... a rational explanation tends to be produced to try and show what has happened is not what those who believe in UFOs suggest.

"But I think we should be a open as possible, so I would be quite happy to give you a guarantee that if I became prime minister I would always be entirely open and frank about these things.

"I don't think any of us have any clue whether there's intelligent life out there and it is certainly not something that any government should seek to hide from anyone."

fosters - The Hackmatack Playhouse is haunted, according to a group of ghost-hunting paranormal investigators.

Everything Paranormal of New England said it detected the spirits of a singing woman and a very angry Native American on the playhouse property.

The good news?

"They're not going to hurt anybody," said the group's founder, Renee Alling.

She and her team, which has investigated several historic homes across New England, scoured the playhouse with infrared cameras, electromagnetic detectors, and audio equipment last month.

She recently presented the evidence to playhouse owner Michael Guptill.

He wasn't surprised by the findings. He said the playhouse property, which has been in his family since the early 1600s, was the site of the "Salmon Falls Massacre"(*note below). A group of Native Americans burned down a home, killing several of his ancestors.

Alling said an audio recording in a former slaughterhouse next to the playhouse picked up a Native American spirit. The group asked if the spirit burned down the home during the massacre, instructing it to knock once for "no" and twice for "yes." Alling said the recording picked up two knocks.

"It was the strangest thing," she said.

The voice of a singing woman was also recorded; Guptill said it likely belongs to his now-deceased grandmother.

Another piece of evidence was a photo taken inside the playhouse. Alling said the photo contains an "orb" of energy indicating a spirit trying to manifest itself.

Guptill was enthralled. When the paranormal group contacted him about collecting evidence, he agreed because he said it sounded fun and reminded him of the movie "Ghostbusters."

He said he has an "open mind" and "believes in things you can't see."

He is currently preparing for the playhouse's season opener June 24 — a performance of "Cinderella."

There's no word from the spirits if they will be in attendance.

*NOTE: South Berwick, Maine - Late 1600's - The Newichawonnock tribe had been summering there long before whites arrived. People heard of the great opportunities in the New World and came to the settlement. The river became a highway. The center of town was Pipe Stave Landing (Leigh's Mills). The community was made up of fishermen, lumberjacks, merchants, laborers, and sailors. Many Scottish settlers inhabited Vaughan Woods. Some of the cellar holes of those homes can still be seen. Lumber was an especially prosperous business. The gigantic trees were chopped down and floated down the river and over to Portsmouth. They were called the king's pines because they were used as masts for the king's ships. With the throngs of people arriving in early South Berwick, the wildlife slowly disappeared. The late 1600's brought conflict to South Berwick.

During King Phillip's War in 1675, Native Americans and colonists fought each other. King Phillip was a Native American. Most white homes were burned by 1690, including the Humphrey Chadbourne House, which has been an archeological dig site during the past few years. To protect themselves during an attack, the settlers built garrisons: 16 by 16 ft. square-shaped structures. What remained of the Hill Garrison still stands on Brattle Street. Today's Salmon Falls Nursery is the site of a massacre at the Tozier Garrison, which took place on September 24, 1675. During King William's War of 1690, the French got Native Americans to fight the colonists. At the Plaisted Garrison (near Leigh's Mills), fighting lasted for several days and the settlers lost. This could have been when the Humphrey Chadbourne House was burned. 54 prisoners were marched to Canada. One of these captives was Hetty Goodwin. Legend says that her husband, who had himself been held captive by Native Americans, gathered ransom money and was eventually able to bring Hetty back to the settlement. The Ultimate Revenge...Pubic Lice?

A British web site is serving up revenge in an unusual way...by selling pubic lice.

Crabrevenge.com claims it does not endorse giving "crabs" to people, and the lice are for "novelty purposes only." On the other hand, it also says, "Make that bitch itch. If you want a method of revenge that doesn't involve permanent damage or risk of personal injury or jail time, you have come to the right place," CNews reports.

The company based in the British Isles offers three options to choose from when ordering lice:

Green package – One colony that can lay as many as 30 eggs for about $20.

Blue package – Three colonies to share with your friends or freeze a batch or two for about $35.

Red package – A vial of "shampoo resistant F strain crabs" which can take up to two weeks to kill for about $52.

The web site, which has numerous spelling and grammatical errors, claims it's not a joke, but some find it hard to take seriously. If you don't like what you see there, yes, there's another similar site, revengecrabs.com.

The Spirits of 9/11

Chris Holly's Paranormal World - I rarely discuss 9/11. I have never written about it before in any fashion. I am a New Yorker and my feelings are very strong and very personal on this subject. I lived in New York City as did my family during the 9/11 attack on this country and my view is not a long distance viewpoint mine is from the horror of watching it happen to my people in my town.

I do not respond to the theories that float about freely on this subject. It sickens and hurts my heart like no other to listen to those who were nowhere near this horrible act of hate give long winded opinions of who and what happened that morning on September 11, 2001.

I do know what it was to watch two planes fly in to a no fly zone; I do know what it is like to watch those planes fly in to two buildings big enough to fill the space of an average town in America. I do know what happens when towers as big as towns fall down upon the surrounding area hitting and destroying everything in the way on the way down.

I also know what it is like to hear my son say to me "Why are they throwing laundry out of the windows". I also know what it is like to hear that same son say to me once he places his eyeglasses on to look again " Oh god Mom it is people jumping , Oh god- no, so many are jumping" I will never forget his voice at that moment. All I could do was tell him to look away and run. That is what I know about 9/11.

I know what 9/11 smelled like and what people in terror look like covered in the gray ash of the combined fallen towers and the dead. I also learned how brave, strong and kind my fellow New Yorkers proved to be.

So you will have to excuse me if I walk away from or twist in sickness and quickly retreat from those who spend hours in debate about something they did not see, live through and in my opinion have any idea at all what they are talking about.

It was a time when things became surreal while things unimaginable were happening all round us and a average morning caught New Yorkers dealing without warning in to a total survival mode.

Quickly the extreme conditions around you become crystal clear and you are aware of everything happening. It is how you live through these types of events. Your senses become acute and you become very clear about what is going on. I cannot and will not forget that day. I also cannot and will not forgive those who entertain themselves with theories and ideas that just do not apply to what happened. That is all I have to say on that area of this subject.

What I want to share is an event that happened at dusk on the day the Towers fell. All of New York was focused on the horror going on in our city. The city was locked down. New Yorkers were trying to deal with the ordeal of searching for survivors . The world watched as we faced the nightmare of being crushed by buildings as big as most small towns in America.

About 8 miles outside the city on the south shore coast of Long Island looking at the city my cousin ,her husband and her friends and family were gathered at a dock where they kept a large boat on the Atlantic Ocean side of New York. They heard from other people who had boats docked that you could watch what was left of the towers burn and also see the spirits rise if you went out in the water and anchored adjacent to the city skyline.

My cousin and her family and friends decided to take the boat out to see if they could have one last look at what was left of the towers which were a landmark on the skyline of New York City along the coast.

My cousin told me it was a silent ride out with heavy broken hearts for those lost and the realization terror was now a word that would stay with us forever. They made their way to the group of other boats anchored in the area that proved to be the best last look at the mighty World Trade Center Complex.

She told me the boats all floated silently in the water as they watched the smoldering building pieces that remained and broken buildings in the area smoke in a slow sad last gasp of what they once had been. She said the fires were out but a glow surrounded the ground zero site in a strange eerie fashion.

My cousin told me they sat there for a very long time without talking and openly wept at the horror before their eyes. Most people knew people who worked in or near the towers. No one was sure who was alive or who was dead. It was a day like no other for New York City and its adjoining communities.

As they sat on the boat watching they all started to notice at once something very odd going on at the ground zero site. Over the buildings, above the city they realized they were seeing flashes of what looked like light rising from the top of what was left of the tower complex rising up into the darkening sky.

The group of people sitting on the boats watched in silence as this strange activity increased until they witnessed hundreds of ghost like white wisps rise from the ground and lift into the night sky. The people watching started to cry as they all were sure at what they were watching.

My cousin talked to me a few days later and told me that she knew people would think she was crazy but she was sure of what she had seen.

She told me it was not smoke, it was not spot lights it was hundreds and hundreds of individual souls rising above the site until you could no longer see them. Straight up until they were simply gone.

She told me they looked like a white glowing shape about body size and that the entire thing lasted for only a hour or so and then it slowed and stopped. She told me she knew it was the confusion of the day that kept the souls earthbound until they realized it was over and that they needed to move on.

This event has forever changed her life. I cannot prove or disprove what the people saw on those boats. I do know it was profound and stayed with them all.

My cousin was a serious skeptic and extremely set in her beliefs until this event occurred. She returned from this event a very different person. The entire group who were on that boat that day have been changed and insist they were witness to the spirits of those who were taken that day rise and leave ground zero.

I did not see this take place and can only report what I was told. I do know firsthand that for days following the World Trade Towers Attack New Yorkers for miles around the city spent days washing the gray thick dust that hovered drop from the sky covering cars, patio furniture and flower pots. Our decks and windows all were covered.

I recall the odd still feel of the days after and the attack as well as the strange cry of the wind that would arrive and hum in a sad sorrowful way as we hosed off our vehicles , houses and belongings from the gray coat of dust covering everything.

I clearly recall hearing my neighbors and family members praying aloud as we hosed off our world knowing we were not only washing away the remains of the towers but those who perished in them. I recall the taste of the ash and forever will remember the smell. The smell of disaster and death that covered the area for miles and miles. We all cried as the dust would cover our hands and faces as we hosed off the gray ash covering everything. I remember spitting out dust as I washed down my car sick at heart knowing I may be spitting out someone's father or mother, son or daughter. It was a time like no other in modern American history and one that must never be forgotten.

I believe my cousin , her family and friends. Looking at their faces as they tell you what they saw leaves no question in my mind that they did watch the spirits of 9/11 rise to a better place.

That is all I have to say about 9/11 and the souls of those lost that terrible day.
