Baseball: Field of Screams

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 11:47 AM PDT

aolnews - If you see a baseball game at Comerica Park in Detroit and also think you see a ghost, you may not be completely off-base.

Employees who work there swear they occasionally see a shadowy apparition in the lobby, and sometimes the elevator mysteriously opens and closes as if it's carrying an invisible passenger.

Some people think the ghost in question belongs to a construction worker who died in the late 1990s while Comerica was being built. Others believe it's the spirit of a security guard who suffered a coronary.

Brian Arnold, who works in the lobby, is convinced the mysterious spook belongs to the greatest player in Detroit Tigers history, Ty Cobb -- even though he played his home games at Tiger Stadium.

It sounds far-fetched -- especially since Comerica Park only opened in 1999 -- but Dan Gordon, co-author of "Field of Screams: Haunted Tales From the Baseball Diamond, the Locker Room, and Beyond" (Lyons Press), a new book about haunted baseball landmarks, said Tigers fans and employees alike have seen great players from the team's history at the new park.

"Many people think Comerica is haunted," Gordon said. "The workers see Ty Cobb, and even the players think the ghosts of old players who previously haunted Tiger Stadium have moved to the new park -- especially after the old park was demolished in 2008."

Conventional wisdom says that a building or structure has to be old to be haunted, but Gordon said Comerica and the new Yankee Stadium have both had numerous ghost sightings despite being young structures.

"The new parks emulate the old parks," Gordon told AOL News. "That sense of awareness contributes to the feeling that people are seeing ghosts because they want that connection to the sport."

Gordon's co-writer, Mickey Bradley, knows that firsthand. He was named after Mickey Mantle, and, while he won't say he believes in ghosts, he admits there is something timeless about baseball that lends itself to supernatural encounters.

"I was lucky enough to attend two of the last three games at the old Yankee Stadium, and, I'll tell you, it's hard to forget your personal history when you're there."

Bradley thinks baseball lends itself to paranormal sightings more than other sports because of the way it keeps its greatest players "alive."

"Baseball is all about the stats, and it allows fans to compare players from different eras in a way they can't in other sports," Bradley said. "That helps keep the players alive to the fans.

"Also, baseball players are more prone to superstitions. They play so many games compared to football. If a last-place team in football beats the first-place team, the fans could talk about it for years. With baseball, any team can beat another on any given day. After a while, players get used to the idea that some things on the field can't be explained."

Take Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. He has been known to accept the presence of "angels" in the outfield and has even told fellow players during stressful moments in a game that "the ghosts will come."

Turns out, one of those ghosts is Babe Ruth, who, Gordon said, seems to get around. Not only has he been seen at Yankee Stadium; he's also been spotted at Fenway Park in Boston and a whole bunch of places on the Gulf Coast where he used to barnstorm during the offseason.

The most unusual sighting may be an antique home in Marlborough, MA., that Ruth used to visit when it was a bordello.

It might seem a strange place for a ghost to hang out, but Gordon said the current owner isn't shocked that the Sultan of Swat wants to visit one of his former hot spots.

"I want to phrase this the right way, but she thought it was quite appropriate that Ruth would visit a place where he was happy," Gordon said.

Searching For Horace Williams' Ghost

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 11:16 AM PDT

mcdowellnews - In Chapel Hill, folks still talk about the legend of Peter Dromgoole, the University of North Carolina student who was killed in a duel in 1832. Many students have reported seeing Dromgoole's ghost and the ghost of his girlfriend at Gimghoul Castle, where the young man's remains are supposedly buried under a blood-stained rock.

But there is another well-known spirit supposedly haunting a section of beautiful and historic Chapel Hill.

Built in the 1840s, the Horace Williams House is located in the college town's historic district. It is within walking distance of the University of North Carolina and the downtown section. The historic home is owned by the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill and is open to the public, according to a Web site.

Originally built as a simple farmhouse, the residence went through several owners and renovations until it was purchased by Horace Williams in 1897. Williams was the chairman of UNC's Philosophy Department and was much beloved by his students. One of them was the future author Thomas Wolfe. In his novel "You Can't Go Home Again," Wolfe wrote this about his favorite philosophy professor: "He was a great teacher, and what he did for us, and for others before us for fifty years, was not to give us his 'philosophy'...but to communicate to us his alertness, his originality, his power to think." Sen. Sam Ervin was another one of his students, according to a Web site.

When he died in 1940, Williams bequeathed the house and his property to the University of North Carolina. In the 1970s, it became the home of the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill.

Many folks in Chapel Hill believe that the good professor never really left. They report that his ghost moves items around in the house as he sees fit. One former occupant of the place reported that as a child, she noticed many strange happenings in the old house. This included fire utensils being moved from one side of the fireplace to the other. Her sister supposedly had several conversations with Horace Williams' ghost. The caretaker of the house has stated that a rocking chair sometimes rocks by itself and the toilets have flushed by themselves on some occasions, according to a Web site.

For us Tar Heel fans, all of this should come as no surprise. Once you've spent time in Chapel Hill, it is very hard to leave it. That is why we call it "the Southern part of heaven." - by Mike Conley

The Horace Williams House - Chapel Hill, NC

The Horace Williams House was first built as a simple farmhouse in the 1840s. Benjamin S. Hedrick (a chemistry professor at UNC) bought the house and property from the University in 1855 for $300. Hedrick added on the House's unique "Octagon Room". The House went through several owners and renovations before finally passing into the ownership of Horace Williams in 1897. Horace Williams was the Chair of the University's Philosophy department and a favorite of most of his students. Upon his death in 1940, he bequeathed the House (along with all of his property) to the University. The House became a rental property for UNC faculty until finally coming under the management of the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill in 1973.

Many people feel that Mr. Williams still inhabits the House, and moves items around as he sees fit. One former occupant of the House, Catherine Berryhill Williams has stated that as a child there were many strange incidents in the house, including fire utensils being moved from one side of the fireplace to the other, and her sister having several conversations with Horace's ghost. The caretaker of the House has stated in radio interviews that there is a rocking chair that sometimes rocks by itself and that the toilets have flushed themselves on rare occasions. The rumors of haunting became so pervasive that a local organization, undertook an investigation that, unfortunately, turned up very little.

Investigation by Haunted North Carolina Paranormal Research & Investigations: his investigation was performed in cooperation with the Rhine Research Center in Durham, NC as part of a series of seminars hosted by various investigative groups. Attendees of the seminar were treated to a lecture Friday night by Kady Harrington and Jim Hall on investigative techniques, and were able to take part in an actual investigation on Saturday night. The investigation was led by Jim Hall and Micki Rowlette, with assistance from Seven's intern, Matt Abele. There were approximately 21 people present at the investigation, including RRC and PSCH staff, and representatives from the Chapel Hill News. The investigation began at 7:00 PM with a full walk through of the house. Jim took EMF readings in each room, Matt took temperature readings, and Micki sketched the layout of the house. EMF readings were highest in the Octagon Room and directly below the Octagon Room in the basement. After close scrutiny, these readings were attributed to the House's HVAC ducts and electrical wiring. After the walk through, the group was broken up into three smaller groups, with each group being assigned a different part of the house. The three locations were selected based upon prior reports of phenomena. Group A, led by Jim set up recording equipment on the side porch. Group B, led by Micki set up in the Dining Room and Office (formerly the bedroom where Mr. Williams was often seen). Group C, led by Seven associate Tony LeTourneau, set up in the Parlor. After 45 minutes, the three groups rotated positions. Although some present did claim to sense a presence in the house, no notable activity occurred and the entire group reconvened and called it a night at approximately 9:30 PM.

This investigation, while a great learning experience for the attendees, was an excellent example of several things NOT TO DO. It illustrated why large groups are difficult to work with, and also why we have to be so selective (and critical) with the investigations we accept. In order to maximize our opportunities to collect evidence, we tend to look for cases with recent and recurring activity, and unfortunately, the Horace Williams House just doesn't seem to have much of either. It is a beautiful, historic home that is well worth visiting for its historic value.

UFO Expert: 'Scotland is a world hot spot for UFOs, ghosts and monsters'

stv - Ron Halliday has spent the last 30 years of his life trying to explain the unexplained. The author, whose books include UFO Scotland and Edinburgh After Dark, believes Scotland is now a haven of UFO activity.

In an exclusive interview with STV, Ron - a 60-year-old retired assistant registrar at Stirling University - said: "I think Scotland is like a world hot spot. All the UFO sightings. All the ghost sightings. All the monster sightings. Poltergeists.

"There is just so much that goes on in Scotland, it is absolutely incredible. It is very hard to explain why Scotland has all these reported incidents."

Ron became interested in UFOs from a young age and started to research it seriously when he was 30. But what is it about the unexplained which interests him and millions of others around the world?

"The whole mystery of it. People claim all these strange experiences which are at odds with our everyday reality. You don't walk down the street and expect to see an alien. The whole thing just seems completely bizarre.

"Things like Independence Day and The X-Files have stimulated people's interest in the whole subject. It the media show interest in UFOs then it definitely generates more UFO reports because people come forward and say they have seen things.

"There are so many people taking photos these days, but there is also greater scepticism. It is very easy to fabricate a UFO picture. The thing that people interested in UFOs find hard to accept is why aliens don't just land in George Square in Glasgow so TV crews can come and film them?

"I am sceptical too. But when you speak to people who have had these experiences, get their perspective on the thing - there is no particular reason why they would make this up."

Horrific Incidents in India

Tribal girl stripped over 'affair', molested by hundreds in Bengal

timesofindia - A 17-year-old tribalgirl was stripped, beaten and forced to walk nude for 8km across three villages with hundreds of men molesting her all the way and taking videos on their mobiles. It was a shocking reminder of the Guwahati incident in November 2007 when a teenager was stripped and molested by a mob during an ethnic clash. An MMS clipping of the Birbhum girls ordeal is now doing the rounds under the name 'Adibasi girl'. And it is this footage that is finally getting the victim some justice.

According to sources, the girls fault was that she loved a boy from another community. Police were shocked to learn that the panchayats and other local bodies knew of the incident but hadn't bothered to inform the administration. The incident happened four months ago but the girl was too traumatized to go to the authorities. It is only when the administration came to know of the MMS that police swung into action on their own and arrested five of the culprits on Sunday.

Some frames in the video are, too, horrific to watch. The girl has a dazed, dead look on her face as she staggers along dusty dirt tracks. A jeering crowd of tribals follows her, beating drums and thrashing her with sticks whenever she stops. Little boys throw stones at her. She takes the blows, defenceless, as she uses her arms in a futile attempt to protect her honour. Men pounce on her, pull her arms apart and molest her amid laughter as the drums beat up a frenzy.

This torture went on for hours in broad daylight, in the scorching heat of April. The footage shows just 11 minutes of it. On Saturday, some journalists showed the clipping to SP Humayun Kabir and DM Saumitra Mohan demanding why they were not taking any action.

Honour killing: Farmer hacks daughter to death in Tamil Nadu

timesofindiaIn an incident of honour killing, a farmer allegedly on Saturday hacked his daughter, who attempted to run away with her lover, to death and then killed his wife who tried to intervene at Nattarpatti village in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

Police, who described the incident as honour killing, said the farmer Vinaitheerthan (63) had a heated exchange with his 21-year-old daughter Arunadevi when she was leaving home early this morning for eloping with her lover Devarajan, a mechanic, of the same area.

The farmer objected to their affair for the past two years and had warned his daughter against meeting Devarajan who reportedly belonged to another community.

Arunadevi got up at around 0400 hrs to run away with her lover but her father stopped her, leading to an altercation, police said.

Police said he then hacked her to death. When her mother tried to intervene, he attacked her with a pestle. Both the women died on the spot. The farmer later surrendered to the police who arrested him.

Doctor Finds Plant Growing Inside Man's Lung

whdh - There was a problem sprouting in a local man's lung. Doctors originally thought the new growth was a tumor, but when they looked closer, they got a big surprise.

"I was told I had a pea seed in my lung that had split and had sprouted," said Ron Sveden.

It was not the diagnosis Ron Sveden was expecting. He had prepared himself to hear the words cancer and tumor, but a plant growing in his lung?

"Probably about a half-an-inch, which is a pretty big thing of course," said Sveden.

Ron had been sick for months. He was already fighting emphysema when his health took a turn for the worse.

"I was not doing too well, a lot of coughing, I was very listless," said Sveden.

On Memorial Day Sveden's wife called 911, and he was rushed to the hospital where doctors took x-rays and found his left lung collapsed.

For two weeks they ran tests but they all came back negative for cancer, until one doctor found the plant growing in his lung.

"Whether this would have gone full-term and I'd be working for the jolly green giant, I don't know. I think the thing that finally dawned on me is that it wasn't the cancer," said Sveden.

Ron said he never felt anything growing in his chest, just a lot of coughing.

Doctors suspect he had eaten a pea at some point in the last couple of months and it went down the wrong way, and then began to grow.

"One of the first meals I had in the hospital after the surgery had peas for the vegetable. I laughed to myself and ate them," said Sveden.

His wife Nancy was beyond happy with this strange twist of fate.

"God has such a sense of humor. It could have been just nothing, but it had to be a pea, and it had to be sprouting," said Nancy Sveden, Ron's wife.

Sveden continues to recover at home. In fact, friends and neighbors have had fun with this; they sent him pea seeds and canned peas all in good fun.

Brazil Air Force Regulates How To Deal With UFOs

laht - The Brazilian air force has decided to regulate the way its members should proceed in case they see a UFO or hear of one being sighted, the daily Diario Oficial said Tuesday.

Under the regulations published Tuesday, when an unidentified flying object appears or a sighting is reported, officers must register it in the books of the Aviation Command, which in turn must draw up a document to be sent to the National Archive.

In Brazil there are no official records of UFOs, but it is known that during the 1964-1985 military dictatorship, intelligence services investigated supposed sightings.

Last year in the old files of the dictatorship were found accounts of Operation Plato, which between the years 1977-1978 unsuccessfully attempted to determine the truth of several reports of UFOs sighted over the states of Maranhão and Para.

Other more recent accounts, also unconfirmed, say that on Jan. 20, 1996, a flying saucer fell in a rural area near Varguinhas, Minas Gerais, and that its occupants alighted from the spacecraft.

Residents of Varguinhas, which has an extraterrestrial being as a symbol, say that aliens were captured by the army, which took them to a military base and then turned them over to a scientific research institute amid the utmost secrecy.

And while there are no records of landings nor direct contacts with creatures from other worlds, Chapada dos Viadeiros National Park, near Brasilia, is said to be home to an "open door to space" through which flying saucers customarily enter and overfly the region.

In this park believers in UFOs tend to meet, passing the daylight hours asleep and at night watching the skies in hopes of observing some spacecraft from another planet.

Solar Storm Caused Black Outs

I had lost power on Tuesday evening, as well, many areas in the Baltimore metro were also affected. I contacted BGE and was told that they knew that the power would be back on by 11pm EDT. Honestly, this raised suspicion because I have never heard the local power company state that they knew when any power outage would be resolved so quickly and at a specific time.

So, I contacted a local atmospheric center this morning to find out if there was a wide spread 'blackout' on August 10th between 9pm-10pm EDT. I was told that a 'solar storm' knocked out power to 'numerous areas' worldwide and that affected satellites most likely were 'stunned' and booted back up quickly. So much for warning the public about the possibility of new 'solar anomalies'...Lon

Senior Citizens, Pets And Abduction....Not A Happy Story

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 08:55 AM PDT

Chris Holly's Paranormal World - About five years ago I talked to a very frightened young woman who was a North American Indian. Her family lived in a isolated part of the West in the United States on a reservation.

She belonged to a tight knit family who were very protective of one another. She was very shy and very nervous about talking to me. It took some time but I finally convinced her I would never use her name or location and would not write anything that would cause her family harm.

She then told me the story of what happened to her grandparents while they were on their weekly outing to do their shopping and errands in the town closet to their reservation and home.

She told me they were both in their late 70's. The couple had a weekly ritual of going to town to shop and do their errands making sure they were back home well before dark . They were nervous being out at night as age made driving and the long dark deserted roads from town to the reservation frightening for the couple.

This one particular trip to town was like most all other trips to town. They started off early with their beloved dog in tow. They took care of their errands and stopped for lunch at their favorite spot before packing up their truck for the trip home.

The older couple and their dog were happily driving back home along the winding deserted roads common to their part of the country. It was only 3 in the afternoon leaving them plenty of time to make it back home before nightfall.

Suddenly a small deer came bounding out of the woods and clipped the side of the old couples truck. The couple , dog and deer bounced around before the old man managed to pull off the road.

They got out to inspect the damage and found the truck was incredibly barely touched however the deer was dead. The old man his wife and dog all stood on the side of the road next to the wide open wilderness that surrounded them.

The elderly couple decided to pull out their tool box to try to butcher whatever they could of the deer so the meat would not be wasted.

The old man was busy pulling out what he needed as the woman tugged and dragged the deer off of the road. Their dog was busy sniffing around and wagging his tail rather happy with the entire event.

As he wondered about the edge of the woods the dog suddenly began barking and growling almost in a rage. Both the man and woman stopped what they were doing and called the dog over to them behind the truck on the side of the road.

The dog came running to them with his tail tucked tightly beneath him. The old couple comforted the dog . The woman heard it first, a strange noise like a low hum coming from the woods.

As the couple stood by their truck with their dog they could see what appeared to be a bright white light coming up from the ground making its way towards them and the road.

At once the couple decided to leave the deer and threw their tools in to the back of their truck. They pushed the dog into the cab of the truck between them and took off down the road. All three of them were terrified at what was coming towards them from the woods.

The next thing the couple remembers is driving into the reservation and pulling up in front of their daughters house. It was 10 P.M at night.

The family had been out looking for them and were frantic about where they may have gone. They always were home before dark and never went anywhere the family did not know about.

The family heard the old couple pull into the driveway and went running out to greet them and to find out where they had been.

The old couple seemed dazed. The old man was completely disoriented and confused. He felt weak and needed help getting out of the truck. When questioned to where they had been he seemed confused and could not answer. The old woman had been asleep. When they woke her she said her head hurt and did not know where she was. Laying across the old woman was the couples beloved pet. He was dead.

The couple had no idea where they had been or why they had lost hours of time. They were crushed to find their dog had died and had no idea what had happened to him.

The old couple told their family about the deer and the strange light coming from the woods towards the road. The old man described it as if the sun was rising from the earth and streaking across the woods towards him. The old couple were heartbroken that their dog had died and had no idea why the perfectly healthy pet died on the way home.

The couple felt ill for a few days after this event. The man had a decline in his health after this encounter.

They do not understand what happened or where they were during this lost time event.

The family does not want this made public or for the old couple to endure any discomfort due to this story becoming known in their area.

I do not know why I never wrote about this incident before. I have thought about it often but kept it on my list of things to get to until now.

I recently received a phone call and the story of this elderly couple came clearly back to my mind.

The phone call came a few weeks ago from long time acquaintance who wanted to tell me about a very odd experience that happened to her parents while they were on vacation.

It seems her parents both in their late 70's decided to go on a last minute trip to Maryland to visit old friends who were living there.

They packed up their minivan and their little dog and took off for a visit with their friends. They were leaving from New Jersey and planned to travel down the east coast via the long scenic route with less traffic and less large trucks to deal with.

They were driving along when they decided to stop for lunch around noon.

Nothing unusual took place . They ate lunch and continued on their way. The elderly pair and their little dog drove for a bit longer when they realized they needed to stop for gas.

They were now driving along roads that were lightly traveled and no longer saw many other cars.

The couple stopped for gas. Both the woman and the man and dog got out while filling up to stretch their legs and take the dog for a short walk. As they walked along the side of the gas station with the dog both of them mentioned to the other how odd and bright the sun had become.

They could barely see even though both of them had on sunglasses.

They got back into their car with the dog sitting on the woman's lap and started off down the deserted highway towards their destination. They had just entered Delaware.

They recall taking off in the car and driving along the road away from the gas station.

Hours later the couple's first memory is of pulling over to the side of the road. The man who had been driving was confused and disoriented. The woman was slumped over her seat in a deep sleep.

The man got out of the car and began to walk around the front of the car confused and disoriented. He started to call out for his wife. She heard him calling and started to wake up. When she finally was able to shake herself awake she saw that her husband was pacing back and forth in front of their van calling her name. She looked down into her lap to find her little dog limp and gasping for air.

She opened her door and called to her husband. He seemed to snap out of his pacing and ran over to her door.

The woman and the old man tried to figure out where they were. They were at a loss to what had happened to them. They both felt ill and weak. The couple was very concerned about their now extremely ill pet.

They had no idea where they were and decided to get back on the road and drive to find a sign or town.

They drove a few miles to find a sign telling them they were somewhere in North Carolina.

The couple knew that was impossible as their watches told them only three hours had passed yet they had traveled a huge distance to a place they had never been before. The little dog was barely alive.

The old couple found the next town and first veterinarian they could to try to get help for their little dog.

The vet was kind and took the old people right in to see if she could help the little dog. The vet told the old couple the little dogs lungs were filled with liquid and his little heart was failing. She could do no more but make the little guy comfortable as he was dying. The old couple was devastated.

They stayed with the dog until he passed away. They were overcome with the sorrow of losing their little pal in such a strange way.

The old couple found a motel and stayed overnight in this North Carolina town they did not know.

In the morning they still felt ill and confused. They had the body of their little dog in the back of their van and wanted only to return home where they could bury him in their own backyard.

The elderly couple knew something horrible had happened to them as they had lost a period of three hours and traveled miles of distance in an impossible amount of time ending with the death of their beloved little dog unexplained.

The trip home was long and difficult for this old couple. It took them 13 hours to cover the same distance they did the day before in 3. They just wanted to go home.

The old couple took turns driving only stopping for gas on the way home. When they returned home late that night they called their daughter and told her of their bizarre trip.

The man in this story had a turn in his health after this trip and has been weak with many different health issues since. The woman remains frightened and confused to what could have happened to them during this strange day of events that seem to be impossible yet happened.

The old couple is mourning the loss of their little dog and do not understand at all what caused the animal to go from perfectly happy, active and wagging to limp and dying in a few hours time.

I found the similarities in both of these cases chilling. I find the accounts of both these older couples to be strange lost time events that certainly lean towards abduction.

Both couples talked of strange bright light and both couples have no memory at all where they had been or what happened to them during the missing hours.

It is not the first time I have had the death of a pet reported to me as a result of a lost time or abduction case. It may be that the transition that takes place during these events are simply something a dog or cat cannot survive. I tend to think it is lucky that both of these senior couples were returned alive and basically in one piece.

The experiences of the older couples years apart , miles apart are remarkably alike. I have not heard nor could I find any other reports as similar as these reports were to each other.

I realize that there may be many other cases like the two of these that just have not been reported . I also realize the longer I do this work that we are very limited in our knowledge to what really is going on all over the world to people on every part of our planet.

I cannot help but wonder if odd lost time events like the two I reported here are happening to the senior citizens of the world . I realize that many elderly people are careful not to report a strange event in fear that family members or society in general will consider them unable to handle being alone or continuing on as productive citizens.

They fear the reaction of the rest of the world making them more inclined to keep an incident like the ones in this article to themselves.

I feel a deep sadness knowing that there may be older people all over the world dealing with lost time or abduction without feeling they can look for help in fear of losing their freedom or facing unkind ridicule.

That is the nature of our society and we are all to blame for it. We have made these subjects a joke. We clearly decided as a society not to deal with it.

This decision has left us alone if we find we are the one looking in to the eyes of the unknown. Trust me nothing on earth can make one feel more alone.

I have only heard of two other events where pets where involved in possible abduction cases and in all of the cases the pets did not survive. I have no idea what goes on during the encounters with the unknown. I do know not everyone or everything taken is returned or survives. A sad side of the reality of the unknown but one we need to understand.

One day if we change our thinking and approach to these subjects we may understand what the truth is concerning our place in this universe. For now all I can do is report to you the encounters of those who are good enough to share what happened to them as they alone faced the terror of the unknown.

Be careful out there and always pay attention to your surroundings.
