| Reader Mail: Shadow Person, Unknown Creature and a Haunting Posted: 16 Aug 2010 11:14 AM PDT  The following emails were recently received by me:Hi, Lon, just wanted to tell you what I saw Friday night. I was out in my back yard, sitting a little bit off my back porch. It was warm, but there was a really nice breeze that night. I had shut off our outside security light, and I was just sitting in a lawn chair, enjoying the breeze. It was around 11:30 at night. Our next door neighbors are on vacation, and I've been watching their house for them. They live on the corner, and there is a street light at the edge of their property that lights up their yard really well. The only part that is mostly dark is the side of their detached garage. The streetlight is so bright that even with my security light off, it lights up half of our property. (We have a double lot.) I was looking at the sky, when I noticed something moving out of the corner of my eye. I saw what I thought was a person squatting down, then getting up and moving around my neighbors trash cans that are on the dark side of the garage, towards my home. I watched for a few minutes as what I thought was a person kept moving around. I had my cell phone, and I pulled up the number of the local police department so I could call them if this person looked like they were out to rob my neighbors. The shadow began moving, and it went past the garage into the light I realized with horror that there was no person attached to the shadow, it was just a big black shadow. It was much larger than a real man would be, around 7-8 feet tall. (Our neighbor is 6'6, and I see how tall he is up against his garage, and whatever this was was at least a foot taller than him, maybe a bit bigger.) I gasped out loud, and it turned towards me. I was so scared that I couldn't even move. The shadow suddenly started lurching through the neighbor's yard, like it was coming for me. I jumped up off the chair, got tangled in it and fell. I glanced over at this thing as I tried to get up. It seemed as if the noise stopped it for a second. I jumped up and ran right into the house. Our door has a window, and as I was shutting the door, this shadow thing appeared in the yard right next to the overturned chair. It stood there for a few moments, and I swear it was actually looking at me, even though it had no facial features. Then it suddenly took off, and vanished from the part of the yard I could see. My husband died 4 years ago, and I live with my 14 and 19 year old daughters. They were watching TV, so I snuck past them upstairs and looked out all the windows. I didn't see this thing anywhere in the yard. I stayed upstairs for a while because I knew by looking in the mirror that I looked like a crazy woman and I didn't want to scare my daughters. I didn't tell them what I saw, because I didn't want them to be scared too. I didn't sleep much that night, nor Saturday or last night either! I don't know what this was, but it scared the heck out of me! No name provided NOTE: My best guess is that it was a so-called 'shadow person' type entity which, for the most part, remains unexplained. There are theories that these are simply spirits that have found a way to materialize into a dark shadowy figure...other conjectures are that these are evil entities that wish to cause harm. Hopefully the readers can give you some direction on your sighting...Lon ********** Hello there Lon, It came to interest me about how you can send in your own story about a close encounter or possibly something unusual. So I have a story my mother told me a long time ago about encountering a creature (which of course I was really skeptical about) when she was roughly 25-26 years old. (Now 55) She recently told me the story again and it was still the same way she told me when I was 15-16 which then made me believe, what if it was true? And if it is true, What was it? When my mother was still living in Vietnam, she was very poor like every working Vietnamese citizen there. People worked hard to try to earn money or at the very least get enough food to survive the rough lifestyle of Vietnam. Back then, My mother told me it was a very shady place to live. People died easily because of starvation or health problems occurred which killed many hard working people. Another way many people died was how citizens were forced to go to different areas of Vietnam to work. My mother was soon one of the many who had to be forced to go elsewhere. That very same night when she was soon to leave, her brother managed to tell her about a boat that was to be used to escape Vietnam and head away from there. At least a dozen people (including my Mother and Uncle) got on a boat and headed out from Hà Tiên towards Thailand.  That night, when the dozen escaped, they celebrated and rejoiced by drinking and eating on the boat through the first night. Through the 2nd or 3rd day, their engine broke and was now traveling where the water took them. Through the 4th day of being on water, they barely had any supplies and soon the group began to think they would all die with little water and food. My mother doesn't know what day this was during the 1 week of being out at sea before reaching Thailand but this is when the encounter with the creature occurred. My mother also didn't tell me what time of day it was, but it was bright enough to be able to see the creature in the water. (during mid day?) As the boat was still moving through the force of the water, my mother noticed a very big creature close to the boat. She described the creature to be "gray" in color and also very big. She told me that the creature must of been much bigger than the boat they were in considering it was right beside them. (Picture of supposed boat size included)  Also, my mother explained to me that the creature didn't move at all when my mother looked at the body of the creature, it just stayed in the shallow water. Surprisingly, I asked her if she saw a face, tail or anything else that could define it. But she told me that her friend grabbed her and told her not to look in case something bad were to occur. Another interesting detail my mother told me was that she felt, if the creature were to move, even it's tail if it did have one, she thought the boat would definitely flip or possibly destroy the boat. I asked my Mom what you thought it could have been and the first thing that came up in her mind was "Fish". But I know in my own conscience, it couldn't have been a fish. So I also asked her if the body of the creature was smooth, and she responded, "Yes". After the next couple days, the dozen managed to make it to Thailand and never saw that creature again. So in my own thoughts, I had to rule it out that it was no fish, and if somehow in the world, if it is a fish, it's definitely a unique one with a smooth gray body and no scales. Also, if my mother did see its entire body, there was definitely no top fins on the creature which almost wants me to rule out it was no shark, but it could of been a bit deeper to not reveal its top fin? I'm also not too sure what creatures lurk in the South China Sea and if they even have any big sea creatures. I wanted to come up with a possibility it was a whale or shark but to get so close to a boat, wouldn't the creatures get scared? Also it stood still in the water for a while, I don't exactly know if sharks have the tendency to do that. Whales on the other hand, maybe? Even for a Fish, Definitely no way it could be one. I was hoping I could get some answers on what it may of or could of been. If you guys get this, hopefully you guys can fill me in with anything that is related to this. I don't know if you remember me or not, but I was in touch with you last year via e-mail with regards to strange things that had been going on in our house. I can't quite remember if it was you I had sent some pictures to or not as it's been a long time. I won't go into too much detail here in case I don't have the right person. The person I was in touch with last year said perhaps they could help me out with getting rid of whatever it is that's living here in this house with us. I have my daughter and her nine month old baby living here with us as well as her five month old dog. The dog has been looking around a lot and growling at something that we can't see. My daughter found one of her babies' pacifiers stuck up underneath his high-chair, when the last place she saw it was in his crib. Yesterday we went out for awhile and later on that night, we discovered the baby's bib wrapped up in the roll up blind as I went to put it down. How it got there, no one knows. We have an alarm system on our house, so no one is getting into our house while we're away. I won't make this a long e-mail, in case I've got the wrong person. Please tell me what I should do, I'm a Christian and a follower of God, and this is disturbing to me and I'm afraid especially for the baby. We did have a pastor come here and bless the house once already, but things haven't stopped. The lady who owned this house before we bought it died here and the last owner lost his wits. My husband and I separated for four months last year and I left. As soon as I was away from here, I began to feel better and healthier, but since I've returned, I've not been well...but strangely enough, it only seems to be me that seems to be getting sick and I end up with some unexplained bruises on my body sometimes when I wake up in the morning. Once again these things seem to only happen to me. I would really like your help / input about this. Thanks for your time. | Elvis Presley's Lifelong Belief In Extraterrestrials Posted: 16 Aug 2010 10:31 AM PDT  Elvis Presley reportedly had a lifelong belief in extraterrestrials and witnessed a number of UFOs during his life.The 'King of Rock and Roll' is said to have had several sightings of UFOs during his life, with his interest sparked by an unusual sighting made by his father, Vernon, on the day he was born, January 8, 1935. The singer's hairstylist and friend, Larry Geller, explained: "His father told us he'd gone out to have a cigarette at 2am during the delivery and when he looked up into the skies above their little shack, he saw the strangest blue light. He knew right then and there that something special was happening." Renowned Elvis historian Cory Cooper, who's been researching the life and times of the rock 'n' roll icon for nearly 30 years, also verified the legend of the blue UFOs in Tupelo that night. He said he's personally heard that same story told multiple times by Geller and other insiders who were close to Elvis. Author Michael C. Luckman - who wrote a book, 'Alien Rock: The Rock 'N' Roll Extraterrestrial Connection', about musicians who have had contact with otherworldly beings - believes Elvis was later visited by aliens when he was a child. Luckman's story is that the extraterrestrials allegedly showed Elvis a hazy image of a man in a white jumpsuit singing to a crowd, but the young boy "had no idea what it all meant at the time." Gellar, who eventually became Elvis' 'spiritual mentor', confirmed he had extraterrestrial experiences while he was with the singer. | Fortean / Oddball News - 8/16/2010 Posted: 16 Aug 2010 09:40 AM PDT  HAARP Being Blamed For Heatwave and Wheat Crop Failure by Russian Conspiracy Theoristsnewsminer - The HAARP project in Alaska, the subject of many conspiracy theories, is getting blamed by some in Moscow for the failure of the wheat crop and the smoke that has been choking the city in recent weeks. The Russian government said it will suspend wheat exports until December because of the severe drought that has hit much of the country. "Moscow's tabloid press has even speculated that the United States orchestrated the heatwave in order to favor its own grain exporters by blasting Russia with harmful rays from a research station in Alaska," the Guardian newspaper of London reports. But the paranoia goes beyond the comments of some newspaper editors. Andrei Areshev, the deputy director of the Strategic Culture Foundation, said the real purpose of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Project in Alaska is to build a weapon "in order to destabilize environmental and agricultural systems in local countries." "At the moment, climate weapons may be reaching their target capacity and may be used to provoke droughts, erase crops and induce various anomalous phenomena in certain countries," he wrote in an article published throughout Russia, according to a news report on the Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty website. "The article has been carried by publications throughout Russia, including International Affairs, a journal published by the Foreign Ministry and by the state-owned news agency RIA Novosti," the RFE/RL news story stated. It went on to state that Areshev told the reporter in a phone interview he was merely stating a hypothesis. The High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program is in Gakona, about 15 miles northeast of Glennallen. Conspiracy buffs have provided no credible evidence to back up their assertions, but they have blamed HAARP across the years for creating hurricanes and snowstorms thousands of miles away and have said it has been used for mind control. All of the theories seem to be extrapolations of statements made in some of the original patent applications as to what might be possible with much more powerful equipment than is found at the site. HAARP also has been blamed for the earthquake in Haiti and others around the world, the floods in Pakistan and the landslides in China. Anytime there is strange weather or a natural disaster, someone can be counted upon to conclude it was caused by HAARP. The operators of the site say ionospheric research is the purpose of the site and that it is not a military project. However, there is little doubt a greater understanding of the physics of the ionosphere has important military and civilian implications for communication and transportation. "The goal of this program is to further advance our knowledge of the physical and electrical properties of the Earth's ionosphere which can affect our military and civilian communication and navigation systems," the HAARP website states. The most recent open house at the facility was July 17, events that are held in large part to counter critics who say the public is never able to get past the gate. You might recall Jesse Ventura huffing and puffing on camera for his TV show "Conspiracy Theory," when he was not allowed entry last year. As far as weather control goes, HAARP states on its website that its transmitter and array of 180 antennas has no impact on that part of the atmosphere. "Transmitted energy in the frequency ranges that will be used by HAARP is not absorbed in either the troposphere or the stratosphere — the two levels of the atmosphere that produce the Earth's weather," HAARP states. "Electromagnetic interactions only occur in the near-vacuum of the rarefied region above about 70 km known as the ionosphere." The HAARP operators will never persuade everyone the site is not a sophisticated death ray, capable of warping minds or weather patterns. Just as there always will be people who believe a giant concentration camp, capable of holding 2 million people, has been built by the government outside Fairbanks and is ready for use. ********** New Robot Developed In Order To Probe The Great Pyramid  msnbc - Following in the footsteps of Howard Carter and Abbot and Costello, a specialized robot will penetrate deeper into the Great Pyramid of Giza than ever before. The robot, part of a years long exploration called the Djedi Project, will explore a shaft inaccessible to a previous robot, unlocking a room that has remain sealed for 4,500 years.The robot explorer, built by researchers at the Leeds University, England, in collaboration with French aviation company Dessault and British robotics company Scoutek, will incorporate a small fiber optic camera for looking around corners, an ultrasonic probe for testing the quality of the rock and a releasable mini-robot that can fit through spaces as small as 0.7 inches in diameter. Additionally, the robot uses special nylon and carbon fiber wheels that won't deface the pyramid's sensitive rock. "All the robots were designed from scratch to do as little damage to the shafts as possible," Shaun Whitehead, Systems engineer and mission manager, told TechNewsDaily. "The previous robots both used tracks that scrubbed away at the floor and ceiling as they moved. We use soft brace pads to grip the walls, like an inchworm or the technique that rock climbers use for ascending 'chimneys.' The wheels don't need to grip, they need to slip as much as possible.'" Whitehead designed the robot so that the team could easily swap out different components, depending on what they find down the shaft. To create the different components, Whitehead and his team used 3-D software provided by Dessault, and then "printed" out the parts on a 3-D fabricator at Leeds University. The robot will travel down a shaft located in the tomb of the Queen. Unlike the King's tomb, where shafts lead to the outside of the Great Pyramid so his soul could escape into the afterlife, the shafts leading from the Queen's tomb borrow deeper into the pyramid. This is the third time a robot has tried to find the end of the Queen's tomb shaft. The first expedition found that a giant stone door blocked the tunnel, and the second robot discovered another door behind that one. With it's microbot and drill, the Leeds University researchers designed this new robot specifically to breach those obstacles. ********** Elderly Man With Walker Robs B.C. Bank montrealgazette - A speedy getaway is usually critical for bank robbers, but perhaps not for an elderly B.C. man who this week held up a bank - and while using a black walker. While no weapon was produced, the 75-year-old told staff at a Prince George Bank of Nova Scotia that he was armed. Staff surrendered a small amount of cash and the robber made his getaway as RCMP were called around 11:45 a.m. Friday. The suspect was described as a Caucasian male weighing about 230 pounds. He was wearing a straw hat, white T-shirt, grey jogging pants and dark glasses - and he was using a walker that many rely on for mobility. Prince George RCMP spokesman Gary Godwin said the man was apprehended approximately 45 minutes later in the same suburban strip mall where the bank is located. The man is in custody while police investigate the decidedly unusual case. "It's not every day you get a 75-year-old male on a walker holding up a bank," Godwin said. "We're looking at all the circumstances that are involved." He said the man is known to police. Godwin, who has just retired from the RCMP after 25 years and has 36 years of policing experience, has never seen as elderly a bank robber as in this case. But he said staff did the right thing in allowing the man to leave the bank even though they never saw a weapon. "You never know what you have on the other side of the counter," Godwin said. "If he says he has a weapon, the best thing is to give him what we wants. Err on the side of caution is what we teach." ********** Woman Accused Of Practicing Withcraft Tossed Into Well deccanherald - A 65-year-old woman, who was accused of practicing witchcraft, was thrashed and then thrown into a well by members of a family in Uttar Pradesh's tribal and Naxal-affected Sonbhadra district, about 450 km from here. The woman, identified as Kaushalya Devi was fished out of the well by the villagers but she had died by then, police sources here said. According to reports, some people, all members of a family, suspected that Kaushalya Devi practised "withcraft." They also suspected that she was behind the death of a little girl in the village a few days back. On Saturday evening, one Dallu, his wife and another person allegedly caught hold of Kaushalya Devi and started thrashing her with lathis (sticks) and bricks. They later threw a profusely bleeding Kaushalya Devi into the village well. Kaushalya Devi's grandson, who was there, shouted for help following which some labourers working in the nearby fields reached there. A police team was immediately rushed to the spot, who arrested three people, including the two main accused. ********** Real-Life Quasimodo Uncovered telegraph - With his hunched back and deformed face, Quasimodo, the tragic hero of Victor Hugo's novel The Hunch Back of Notre Dame, has always been considered a mythical creation drawn from the depths of the author's imagination. But a new discovery appears to reveal the real-life inspiration behind the character from Hugo's seminal novel, which tells the story of the deaf bell-ringer of Notre Dame and his unrequited love for the gypsy girl Esmeralda. Clues suggesting that Quasimodo is based on a historical figure have been uncovered in the memoirs of Henry Sibson, a 19th-century British sculptor who was employed at the cathedral at around the time the book was written and who describes a hunched back stonemason also working there. The documents were acquired by the Tate Archive in 1999 after they were discovered in the attic of a house in Penzance, Cornwall, as the owner prepared to move out. However, the references to a "hunchback sculptor" working at Notre Dame have only just been discovered, as the memoirs are catalogued ahead of the archive's 40th anniversary this year. The seven-volume memoirs document Sibson's time in Paris during the 1820s, when he was employed by contractors to work on repairs to Notre Dame Cathedral. In one entry, he writes: "the [French] government had given orders for the repairing of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, and it was now in progress ... I applied at the Government studios, where they were executing the large figures [for Notre Dame] and here I met with a Mons. Trajan, a most worthy, fatherly and amiable man as ever existed – he was the carver under the Government sculptor whose name I forget as I had no intercourse with him, all that I know is that he was humpbacked and he did not like to mix with carvers." In a later entry, Sibson writes about working with the same group of sculptors on another project outside Paris, where he again mentions the reclusive government sculptor, this time recalling his name as "Mon. Le Bossu". Le Bossu is French for "the hunchback". He writes: "Mon Le Bossu (the Hunchback) a nickname given to him and I scarcely ever heard any other ... the Chief of the gang for there were a number of us, M. Le Bossu was pleased to tell Mon Trajan that he must be sure to take the little Englishman." Adrian Glew, the Tate archivist, who made the discovery, said: "When I saw the references to the humpbacked sculptor at Notre Dame, and saw that the dates matched the time of Hugo's interest in the Cathedral, the hairs on the back of my neck rose and I thought I should look into it." Hugo began writing The Hunch Back of Notre Dame in 1828 and the book was published three years later. He had a strong interest in the restoration of the cathedral, with architecture featuring as a major theme in the book. Hugo publicly opposed the original neoclassical scheme for Notre Dame's restoration led by the architect Etienne-Hippolyte Godde – the same scheme which Sibson describes Le Bossu and Trajan working on – favouring a more Gothic style for the cathedral. The publication of The Hunch Back of Notre Dame in 1831, which made Hugo one of France's most acclaimed authors, is widely credited with prompting the Gothic restoration of the cathedral in 1844, designed by the architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, which Hugo had championed. His close links with the cathedral make it likely that he would have known Le Bossu and Trajan, and further research undertaken by Mr Glew in the national archives of France has uncovered additional links between Hugo and the characters described by Sibson. The Almanach de Paris from 1833 – which gives a list of all professionals working in the city – names a sculptor "Trajin" as living in Saint Germain-des-Pres, where Hugo also lived at the time. An early draft of Les Misérables, another of Hugo's acclaimed novels, holds another clue indicating that Hugo drew on the Government sculptors described by Sibson for inspiration. The lead character in an early version of the novel is named as "Jean Trejean" which Hugo later changed to "Jean Valjean". Professor Sean Hand, the head of the Department of French Studies at the University of Warwick, and an expert on Hugo, said: "It is a fascinating discovery. Many scholars have tried to link Quasimodo's deformities with certain medical conditions, but I have never seen any reference to a historical character that he may have been based upon. "It sounds entirely plausible, and if Hugo was indeed inspired by this deformed stonemason at Notre Dame, it further renews our appreciation of his amazing imaginative powers to take details from real life and weave them into magical literature." Gerry Croydon, a distant relative of Sibson's, said: "Henry's diaries are fascinating, as he travelled the length and breadth of Europe and came across some amazing characters. The discovery that his diary may reveal the inspiration behind one of literature's great characters, is quite amazing." Sibson's memoirs will be on display outside the Hyman Kreitman Reading Room at Tate Britain until the end of August. NOTE: Hopefully, the memoirs will be transcribed. Much of this was included in a piece written by Chris Holly, but there have been a few changes. Note...click images for larger version: Hi Lon, thanks for responding so quickly. Here are my drawings and report. Chris Holly reported my story pretty much verbatim, so I will repeat it here for you in a slightly different form. Date: Dec. 3, 2004 Time:6:00 - 7:00pm Weather Conditions: clear and already dark. Moon hadn't risen yet Location: Traveling south on Rt.2 in WV from Point Pleasant to Huntington WV. Near Ashton WV (see map) A friend and I were traveling on Rt. 2 towards Huntington WV. I was on my way to set up my booth for an art show and my mind was occupied with the booth set up and show logistics. We had just gone over the railroad tracks outside of Ashton WV and were on a long straight stretch of road. There was distant oncoming traffic and the headlights were on. There were no cars behind us in sight. I was in the passenger seat and my friend was driving. I noticed a sudden movement in the sky over the Ohio River to my right in front of the car. It was a greyish, smooth, winged shape. the shape swooped in a figure 8 in front of the windshield and then was suddenly gone to the left of us. It didn't fly out of sight, it was just gone. This happened very quickly, but as I am a visual artist, it was impressed into my memory banks! Size: Bigger than the car. The wingspread was wider than the 2 lane road we were on. The wings seemed to stretch wider somehow as it did the figure 8 swoop. It was never more than 25 feet away from us as it flew towards the windshield. We thought it was going to crash into the windshield! At one point during the swoop it was only about 5 feet off of the pavement. Color: Grey, translucent like a jellyfish. As it banked and swooped I could see many angles of it and somehow it looked more transparent as it turned some parts to us. I immediately thought it was like a manta ray. The body was flattish like a manta ray or a bat. The wings were long and smooth and sort of pointed at the tip. I saw no texture or roughness on it, only smooth surface. Characteristics: Only body and wings- no head, eyes, tail, or feet. It did not look humanoid in any way. On the other hand, it wasn't a bird either. It moved more like something in the ocean would move - Did not flap the wings like a bird, or flutter them like a bat, but stretched them instead. My friend (who alas passed away a year ago) said to him the wings looked ragged like there were pieces coming off of them.  He also said he got a good look at the underneath and it looked grey and smooth. This absolutely was not a machine! It was articulated like a living creature and seemed like something organic. As I look back on this sighting, I wonder if it was something playing with us - It happened so quickly that the only scary part was when we thought it was going to crash into the windshield. It was so beautiful and strange! It reminded me of a sea creature more than anything else, maybe our air is like water to them. The only other time in my life I have ever seen anything remotely similar was in 2000 in Clay Co. WV, driving along a one lane road along the Elk River (a river was present in both instance -I just realized) In that case, I was alone and for about a mile as I drove, I kept noticing a shimmer in front of the car about 15 feet ahead of the car. This was late morning in the summer. It preceeded the car at the same distance for several minutes, then I noticed a shadow on the road too, large and shaped sort of like a bird. I looked up out of the windshield and there was a large crow flying above me. But what I first saw in front of the car was not a shadow, it was a disturbance in the air in front of my car that looked like a heat mirage sort of but was very close. This was a curvy country road right by the river. I had never seen heat mirages on that road before or since. At the time I thought that it was just sort of weird, then very close to that time I had a very lucid dream that I was in my car flying over the river right near the place where I saw the shadow.  As an artist, my mind is open to many possibilities and explanations - I think the unseen world is just a small vibrational frequency away. As a child I was fascinated by fairies and nature spirits and spent a lot of time alone outdoors. NOTE: though there have been several variations in describing the 'Mothman', this particular description is unique and most likely represents another cryptid or non-terrestrial entity.
