Emperor Norton I: San Francisco's Favorite Oddity

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 10:58 AM PDT

In 1859, an unknown, young and failing San Franciscan businessman named Joshua Abraham Norton attempted to corner the market on rice after hearing of a famine in China. He lost everything he owned when a large shipment of Peruvian rice arrived in port unexpectedly, making his investments worthless overnight. This apparently unbalanced him enough that he declared himself Emperor of the United States (he later would add "and Protector of Mexico") and for the next 20 years 'til his death, he wandered the streets in full regalia, inspecting his domain. In January 1880 he collapsed on a street corner and died. Nearly 30,000 marched in homage to bury him and writers such as Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stevenson would eulogize his memory.

Before then he wrote a large number of proclamations, all of which were duly published in the state's newspapers. In 1869 for instance he, "being desirous of allaying the dissensions of party strife now existing within our realm," abolished both the Republican and Democratic Parties. Another edict was instructions for the countries of the world to form a "League of Nations." Perhaps his most famous decree was an order directing the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to begin construction of a suspension bridge across the bay as well as a tunnel, both of which were actually completed 50 and 80 years (respectively) after his death (no thanks to Norton).

Much beloved by his fellow citizens, Norton I paraded frequently through the streets in elaborate blue uniforms with gold epaulets given to him by officers of the nearby Presidio with a beaver hat decorated with peacock feathers. Although routinely broke he ate at the best cafes in town; these restaurateurs then added brass plates above their doors proclaiming "By Appointment to His Imperial Majesty Norton I of The United States." The brass plaques were much sought after and a huge boost to trade. One police officer in 1867 arrested Norton and tried to have him committed but this led to a number of blistering editorials in the newspapers and led to the police chief ordering him released and issuing him a formal apology. Norton then magnanimously granted an "imperial pardon" to the young police officer and as a result, all police officers in San Francisco thereafter would salute him in passing.

The 1870 U.S. Census records list Joshua Norton as 50 years of age and his occupation is given as "Emperor." Norton I would also issue his own money to pay certain debts, typically ranging from 50 cents to $10 and these notes are now highly coveted collectors' items. He also wrote numerous letters to the widowed Queen Victoria (none were ever answered) proposing marriage.

When he collapsed on the street and died in 1880 the San Francisco Chronicle published his obituary on its front page under the headline "Le Roi est Mort" (The King is Dead!) and sadly reported, "In the darkness of a moonless night and under a dripping rain, Norton I, by the Grace of God Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, departed this life." Most city newspapers likewise reported the news on the front pages in banner headlines. - riverjournal.com

THE DECREES OF EMPEROR NORTON

Many of the "decrees" attributed to Norton I were fakes; written in jest by newspaper editors at the time for amusement, or for political purposes. Those "decrees" listed below were actually issued by Norton.

September 17, 1859 – Joshua A. Norton, who lost his money in an attempt to corner the rice market, today declared himself Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico.

December 2, 1859 – Norton I dismissed Gov. Wise of Virginia for hanging John Brown and appointed John C. Breckenridge of Kentucky to replace him.

February 1, 1860 – Decree from Norton I ordered representatives of the different states to assemble at Platt's Music Hall to change laws to ameloriate the evils under which the country was laboring.

July 16, 1860 – Decree from Norton I dissolved the United States of America.

October 1, 1860 – Decree from Norton I barred Congress from meeting in Washington, D.C.

January 21, 1867 – An overzealous Patrol Special Officer, Armand Barbier, arrested His Majesty Norton I for involuntary treatment of a mental disorder and thereby created a major civic uproar. Police Chief Patrick Crowley apologized to His Majesty and ordered him released. Several scathing newspaper editorials followed the arrest. All police officers began to salute His Majesty when he passed them on the street.

July 25, 1869 – Decree from Norton I that San Franciscans advance money to Frederick Marriott for his airship experiments.

August 12, 1869 – Decree from Norton I dissolved and abolished the Democratic and Republican parties because of party strife now existing within our realm.

December 15, 1869 – Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, left San Francisco to seek his yearly tribute from the legislature and lobbyists. He inspected the new capitol during the gala ball celebrating the buildings' inauguration.

December 16, 1869 – Decree by Norton I demanded that Sacramento clean its muddy streets and place gaslights on streets leading to the capitol.

August 1, 1870 – Norton I was listed by the Census taker with the occupation of "emperor," living at 624 Commercial St.

March 23, 1872 – Decree by Norton I that a suspension bridge be built as soon as convenient between Oakland Point and Goat Island, and then on to San Francisco.

September 21, 1872 – Norton I ordered a survey to determine if a bridge or tunnel would be the best possible means to connect Oakland and San Francisco. He also ordered the arrest of the Board of Supervisors for ignoring his decrees.

January 2, 1873 – Decree from Norton I that a worldwide Bible Convention be held in San Francisco on this day.

March 18, 1873 – David Belasco made his stage debut at the Metropolitan Theatre playing Emperor Norton in the play "The Gold Demon."

January 8, 1880 – Norton I dropped dead on California St. at Grant Ave. He was on his way to a lecture at the Academy of Natural Sciences.

January 9, 1880 – Headline in the Morning Call: "Norton the First, by the grace of God Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, departed this life."

January 10, 1880 – Norton I was buried today at Masonic Cemetery. The funeral cortege was two miles long. 10,000 people turned out for the funeral.

June 30, 1934 – Emperor Norton I reburied in Woodlawn Cemetery by citizens of San Francisco.

January 7, 1980 – The city marked the 100th anniversary of the death of its only monarch, Emperor Norton, with lunch-hour ceremonies at Market and Montgomery streets. - sfmuseum.org

THE DEATH OF EMPEROR NORTON
Le Roi Est Mort

San Francisco Chronicle
January 9, 1880

Last night at 8:15, Joshua Norton, universally known, and known almost only as Emperor Norton, died suddenly in this city. The similar death of the first citizen of San Francisco, or the highest municipal officer of the city, would not have caused so general a sensation as that of the harmless old man whose monomania never distorted at least a heart which was wholesome, and hardly affected a mind which had once been of the shrewdest, other than in the method of his sovereignty of the United States and Protectorate of Mexico. He had started from Kearny Street up California Street, with the intention of occupying a seat in the rooms of the Academy of Science during the debate of the Hastings Society. Almost as he reached the East line of Dupont Street on the south pavement of California, he halted for a moment, then staggered forward, halted again and then fell prone on the sidewalk. Wm. Proll, doing business at 537 California Street, was going up California Street immediately behind the Emperor, saw him fall, and hastened to aid him. With the assistance of others who quickly arrived, the Emperor was placed in a sitting posture on the wet pavement and his back supported against the wall of the corner house. His speechlessness and his head fallen forward on his breast indicated to the rapidly gathering crowd, every one of whom knew him and knew him to be highly temperate, that something serious had befallen him and the police officer on the beat hastened for a carriage to convey him to the City Receiving Hospital. Speedily as the hack had been procured, when it arrived at the place Norton was dead.

On the reeking pavement, in the darkness of a moonless night under the dripping rain, and surrounded by a hastily gathered crowd of wondering strangers, Norton I, by the grace of God, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, departed this life. Other sovereigns have died with no more of kindly care--other sovereigns have died as they have lived with all the pomp of earthly majesty, but death having touched them, Norton I rises up the exact peer of the haughtiest King or Kaiser that ever wore a crown. Perhaps he will rise more than the peer of most of them. He had a better claim to kindly consideration than that his lot "forbade to wade through slaughter to a throne and shut the gates of mercy on mankind." Through his harmless proclamations can always be traced an innate gentleness of heat, a desire to effect uses and a courtesy, the possession of which would materially improve the bitterful living princes whose names will naturally suggest themselves.

Just the Facts? - Gigantic Lobster Finds Home, Inherited OBE and Alien Intervention

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 09:49 AM PDT

18-lb American Lobster has a New Home

A giant, 18-pound lobster has found a new home in famously freaky Coney Island.

The colossal crustacean was caught weeks ago off the coast of Canada and sent in a two-ton shipment to the New England Lobster Co. in San Francisco, the New York Daily News reports.

Typical lobsters in a restaurant or seafood shop are between 1.25 and 2 pounds and around 5 to 7 years old.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, the general formula to estimate a lobster's age is its weight in pounds times four, plus three. That makes Coney Island's Big Red is an astounding 75 years old and still growing.

New England Lobster's bookkeeper, Jennifer Vargas, set out to save the giant creature when it was received on the West Coast. "This seemed like a [lousy] way to go," she told the Daily News. "A lot of the customers were interested in him -- the problem was, they didn't have a pot big enough."

The New York Aquarium in Coney Island, run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, responded to an online posting, and the 18-pounder was shipped back East.

Aquarium Director Jon Dohlin said the beast was an instant attraction for anyone visiting the aquarium.

"When we saw that ad for an 18-pound American lobster, we knew we had to have it," Dohlin told local station Pix11. "He's a magnificent creature that has been delighting our guests since his arrival. He radiates a certain charisma, a crustacean charisma," he added.

The lobster is the largest of its species ever to live at the New York Aquarium and is housed in its Sea Cliffs exhibit. There, it shares space with marine mammals like walruses and sea lions, along with hundreds of fish.

The giant lobster reportedly eats about three-quarters of a pound of shrimp and fish a day.

While the freakishly large lobster is certainly impressive, he is nowhere near record-size. According to the University of Maine's Lobster Institute Web site, the world record holder is a 44-pounder caught off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1977. Others have grown as big as 4 feet long. - ibtimes

Modified Ecstasy 'attacks blood cancers'

Modified ecstasy could one day have a role to play in fighting some blood cancers, according to scientists.

Ecstasy is known to kill some cancer cells, but scientists have increased its effectiveness 100-fold, they said in Investigational New Drugs journal.

Their early study showed all leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma cells could be killed in a test tube, but any treatment would be a decade away.

A charity said the findings were a "significant step forward".

In 2006, a research team at the University of Birmingham showed that ecstasy and anti-depressants such as Prozac had the potential to stop cancers growing.

The problem was that it needed doses so high they would have been fatal if given to people.

The researchers, in collaboration with the University of Western Australia, have chemically re-engineered ecstasy by taking some atoms away and putting new ones in their place.

One variant increased cancer-fighting effectiveness 100-fold. It means that if 100g of un-modified ecstasy was needed to get the desired effect, only 1g of the modified ecstasy would be needed to have the same effect.

Scientists say this also reduced the toxic effect on the brain.

Lead researcher Professor John Gordon, from the University of Birmingham, told the BBC: "Against the cancers, particularly the leukaemia, the lymphoma and the myeloma, where we've tested these new compounds we can wipe out 100% of the cancer cells in some cases.

"We would really need to pinpoint which are the most sensitive cases, but it has the potential to wipe out all the cancer cells in those examples.

"This is in the test tube, it could be different in the patient, but for now it's quite exciting."

'Soapy' cells

It is believed that the drug is attracted to the fat in the membranes of the cancerous cells.

Researchers think it makes the cells "a bit more soapy", which can break down the membrane and kill the cell.

They said cancerous cells were more susceptible than normal, healthy ones.

However, doctors are not going to start prescribing modified ecstasy to cancer patients in the near future.

The research has been demonstrated only in samples in a test tube. Animals studies and clinical trials would be needed before prescribing a drug could be considered.

First, however, chemists in the UK and Australia are going to try to tweak the modified ecstasy even further as they think it can be made even more potent.

'Genuinely exciting'

If everything is successful, a drug is still at least a decade away.

Dr David Grant, scientific director of the charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, said: "The prospect of being able to target blood cancer with a drug derived from ecstasy is a genuinely exciting proposition.

"Many types of lymphoma remain hard to treat and non-toxic drugs which are both effective and have few side effects are desperately needed.

"Further work is required but this research is a significant step forward in developing a potential new cancer drug." - BBC

Reader: Inherited lightening strikes / out-of-body experiences?

Mr. Strickler...I know this story is nearly a year old but I am fairly new to the site and discovered this link while browsing your site. Although I do not have a multiple lightning strike experience I have been struck by lightning and nearly killed. When I was struck I went immediately unconscious. I know that I was not immediately killed because I fell into a mud puddle and my lungs filled with water. At that point my heart stopped beating. I was not breathing and had no pulse. I was saved by an airman on the base were my father was stationed. He is the only reason I know the details of the story while I was dead/unconscious. I was about 13 years old at the time. He pulled me out of the mud puddle and performed CPR to get me breathing and a pulse going. I awoke in the ambulance in a state of shock and was immediately sedated again. I woke the second time in the hospital ER. I have had some supernatural experiences throughout my life although they do not overwhelm me. The occurrences are rare. I do however have a lot of incidences of Sleep Paralysis and OBE's. I also seem to have some strong intuitive feelings at times which have saved my life on more than one occasion. The main point I want to make with this post is that my Grandfather was also struck by lightning when he was a young man. He actually read his own death in the newspaper. The saddest thing about this story is that three of his brothers and sisters were killed instantly in the same incident. This was half of all of his brothers and sisters dead in an instant. They were all on the porch of the house which had a wrought iron railing around the porch. They were all talking while leaning on the railing when lightning struck the house which had a tin roof and killed them all except for my Grandfather. I do not ever remember my Grandfather having any supernatural experiences at least that he spoke about. I know this is a little different than the story presented on your site but I can say it might run in my family. - Mitchell

Tree-Huggers' Close Encounter

Sunday, 4pm, March 1996, Canyon Road, Portland OR. - unedited: Friend and I are walking a three-acre parcel that is about to be clear cut for housing. We are hugging each tree good-bye.
Something makes us stop and turn to the west -- it's a humming and a presence. Time stops cold. We are out of normal reality. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a giant pulsing, humming, beeping, shape-shifting blue orb races towards us. It looks like it traveled right through my house, three stories from the ground, and the orb is bigger than the house. It's headed straight for us. I'm dumbstruck, but I face it square, unafraid. It's like it has a message for us about the trees and what we're doing. In a weird way, the appearance of the orb somehow doesn't surprise me, once the pause in time-space takes place.
It zooms right at us, goes right through us and disappears into the trees. We're just sort of stunned. "What was that?" "Did you see that?" "I'm so glad I had a witness."
We never noticed any objects in the sky before or after. - MUFON CMS

Aliens may destroy humanity to protect other civilizations, say scientists

It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.

Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by a Nasa-affiliated scientist and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University that, while considered unlikely, they say could play out were humans and alien life to make contact at some point in the future.

Shawn Domagal-Goldman of Nasa's Planetary Science Division and his colleagues compiled a list of plausible outcomes that could unfold in the aftermath of a close encounter, to help humanity "prepare for actual contact".

In their report, Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis, the researchers divide alien contacts into three broad categories: beneficial, neutral or harmful.

Beneficial encounters ranged from the mere detection of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), for example through the interception of alien broadcasts, to contact with cooperative organisms that help us advance our knowledge and solve global problems such as hunger, poverty and disease.

Another beneficial outcome the authors entertain sees humanity triumph over a more powerful alien aggressor, or even being saved by a second group of ETs. "In these scenarios, humanity benefits not only from the major moral victory of having defeated a daunting rival, but also from the opportunity to reverse-engineer ETI technology," the authors write.

Other kinds of close encounter may be less rewarding and leave much of human society feeling indifferent towards alien life. The extraterrestrials may be too different from us to communicate with usefully. They might invite humanity to join the "Galactic Club" only for the entry requirements to be too bureaucratic and tedious for humans to bother with. They could even become a nuisance, like the stranded, prawn-like creatures that are kept in a refugee camp in the 2009 South African movie, District 9, the report explains.

The most unappealing outcomes would arise if extraterrestrials caused harm to humanity, even if by accident. While aliens may arrive to eat, enslave or attack us, the report adds that people might also suffer from being physically crushed or by contracting diseases carried by the visitors. In especially unfortunate incidents, humanity could be wiped out when a more advanced civilisation accidentally unleashes an unfriendly artificial intelligence, or performs a catastrophic physics experiment that renders a portion of the galaxy uninhabitable.

To bolster humanity's chances of survival, the researchers call for caution in sending signals into space, and in particular warn against broadcasting information about our biological make-up, which could be used to manufacture weapons that target humans. Instead, any contact with ETs should be limited to mathematical discourse "until we have a better idea of the type of ETI we are dealing with."

The authors warn that extraterrestrials may be wary of civilisations that expand very rapidly, as these may be prone to destroy other life as they grow, just as humans have pushed species to extinction on Earth. In the most extreme scenario, aliens might choose to destroy humanity to protect other civilisations.

"A preemptive strike would be particularly likely in the early phases of our expansion because a civilisation may become increasingly difficult to destroy as it continues to expand. Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilisational expansion could be detected by an ETI because our expansion is changing the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, via greenhouse gas emissions," the report states.

"Green" aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. "These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets," the authors write.

Even if we never make contact with extraterrestrials, the report argues that considering the potential scenarios may help to plot the future path of human civilisation, avoid collapse and achieve long-term survival. - guardian

Hoax Photo Revives Legend of Tragic 'Llanelly House' Ghost

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 08:41 AM PDT

Hoax photo that has gone viral
It's a chilling image that recalls the tragic tale of a servant's suicide at one of Wales' most historic houses.

Sadly, it's also one that will be recognised by anyone familiar with the dozens of pictures of fake ghosts circulating online.

The picture, claiming to prove the existence of the ghost of a young woman who has haunted Llanelly House since the 19th century, was shown to staff at Llanelli library by a "visibly excited" man.

But it wasn't long before they spotted its uncanny resemblance to similar pictures found on the web.

Library regional manager Mark Jewell said: "The elderly gentleman came in and showed us the photograph which had been taken by his friend outside Llanelly House.

"He was in a state of excitement. He thought we would be interested in the photograph and showed it to quite a few of the staff.

"Staff have now carried out some research and found what appears to be the same image on the internet.

"It seems the gentleman may have been the victim of a hoax, as he appeared to be very genuine and excited about this."

At first the woman in the picture was thought to be Mira Turner, a servant in the 19th century who, according to legend, haunts the house. She was buried on August 9, 1851, aged 22 – 160 years to the day the hoax picture was taken.

A spokesman for Carmarthenshire council said: "Legend has it that Mira Turner has haunted Llanelly House since killing herself by taking poison.

"She took a quantity of laudanum after stories began circulating linking her and the married butler, Charles Howell.
Llanelly House

"Sadly, Mira protested her innocence to the end."

Different stories have circulated surrounding the exact circumstances of her death – some historians say she fell down the stairs whilst suffering the effects of the poison, others say she jumped out of the window.

Burial records for the parish show that Mira was listed as being buried on August 9,1851.

Her body lies in an unmarked grave in a nearby church but her spirit has supposedly been seen countless times in Llanelly House according to William and Benita Afan Rees from the Llanelli Historical Society.

"Different stories have been recounted over the years by people who have seen the ghost, but the most fascinating one was told by the daughter of a lady who was responsible for cleaning Llanelly House during the 1960s," said Mr Rees.

"The daughter and her friend were waiting for the mother to finish cleaning the downstairs rooms and they wandered upstairs and got lost in the maze of rooms.

"Feeling frightened and about to panic the two young girls, who were about nine or ten years old, saw what looked like a young women in dark clothes beckoning to them to follow her.

"The frightened young girls followed the figure that disappeared into one of the rooms. "The girls found themselves at the top of the flight of stairs and ran down to explain what had happened.

"The mother told them not to worry – they must have seen the ghost of Llanelly House."

If real, the identity of the woman in the doctored photograph remains a mystery.

But it seems her image has become a popular internet hoax. She has been pictured in front of the Golden Gate Bridge at San Francisco, in Stonehenge and as far afield as Malaysia."

Mr Jewell added: "Even though it appears the image in this photograph is not genuine, it has renewed interest in the story of the Llanelly House ghost and brought attention to the restoration work going on both there and at the library." - walesonline

THE GHOST OF MIRA TURNER

The story of the ghost that haunts Llanelly House is well documented and describes how a young servant girl who was made pregnant by the master of the house killed herself because she feared the shame that would be brought on her and her family. One story describes how she threw herself down the stairs whilst the other story relates how she threw herself from an upstairs window falling to the courtyard below.

Different stories have been recounted over the years by people who have seen the ghost, but the most fascinating one was told by the daughter of a lady who was responsible for cleaning Llanelly House during the 1960s. The daughter and her friend were waiting for the mother to finish cleaning the downstairs rooms and they wandered upstairs and got lost in the maze of rooms. Feeling frightened and about to panic the two young girls who were about nine or ten years old, saw what looked like a young women in dark clothes beckoning to them to follow her.

The frightened young girls followed the figure that disappeared into one of the rooms. The girls found themselves at the top of the flight of stairs and ran down to explain what had happened. The mother told them not to worry they must have seen the ghost of Llanelly House.

This was an intriguing story and all the more so when the UK Census details of 1851 show that a young servant girl called Mira Turner who had been born in Reading, Berkshire, was working as a housemaid for the Chambers family. At that time Llanelly House was divided into two parts with William Chambers Senior, his son William Chambers Junior, his wife and children living in one part and Doctor Thomas Bedlington Cook, his wife and four children living in the other part. One of the doctor's children was also another doctor, John Kirkhouse Cook aged 37 and unmarried.

Looking through records of burials for the parish of Llanelli, Mira Turner was listed as being buried on 9 August 1851 aged 22 years. At first it was thought that Mira might have died through natural causes or one of the diseases that were prevalent at the time. Llanelli Registry Office provided a death certificate for her which revealed that she had committed suicide by taking Laudanum whilst temporarily insane. The coroner was William Bonville of Bryn Towy, near Carmarthen and the Registrar was David Arthur Davies of Llanelli.

It was common practise in the 1800s for girls who became pregnant out of wedlock to be considered insane or immoral and would have been ostracised by society.

Many young women were placed in mental institutions, or forced to seek shelter in a workhouse having no means of support because they would have lost their job. Many girls, like Mira, could not cope with this situation and killed themselves rather than face the wrath of society.

It is intriguing to consider how Mira was able to obtain the laudanum, which is not a drug that would have been readily available to a servant girl. Did one of the doctors provide the laudanum? Laudanum would have made her feel drowsy. Did she fall down the stairs or fall out of the window because the drug made her unsteady? Was she given the laudanum deliberately and was she pushed or thrown down the stairs or through the window to make it look like suicide?

It would have been unthinkable in those days for the 'gentleman' responsible to face up to his responsibility and his family would have ensured that no blame was attached to him. - llanelli-history.co.uk
