| Posted: 02 Feb 2011 06:36 PM PST  I received the following correspondence this evening: Dear MUFON Colleague Last week, Leslie Varnicle, State Director of Colorado and a 41 year member of MUFON, was fired by Clifford Clift. Many of you have seen Leslie's tireless work at the MUFON annual symposia. She was head of a vibrant state chapter with more than 160 members and a $20,000 kitty. She was the originator of the webinar concept in MUFON; she spent thousands of dollars of her own money for equipment for her state; she is a MUFON "Benefactor." Why did Clift and the MUFON Board fire Leslie Varnicle and demote this 41 year member to the status of "Journal subscriber"? No one knows! But we do know this: a whole lot of people think it was wrong. And Leslie is not only SD fired. This month the SD of Oklahoma, Marilyn Carlson, a 20-year member, resigned rather than be fired. Christine Dickey, a 15-year member and SD of Arizona, asked for a leave of absence and was fired instead. Elaine Douglass, a 25 year member and SD of Utah, was also fired. That makes four high-performing, long time, highly experienced SDs arbitrarily fired or pushed out by the MUFON hierarchy for unknown or insufficient reasons. In response to these, and many, many other disturbing events and trends in MUFON, a handful of us have formed "The Committee to Reform MUFON." We are writing to you now to let you know of these outrageous firings and most important to send you the enclosed "Petition to the Board of Directors and the International Director of MUFON." We ask you to read the four points of the Petition (below), consider them carefully, and sign and return the Petition to this email address in the next 3 days. Petition Item 1 - Calls for a New democratic corporate structure of MUFON in which the Board of Directors will be voted upon by all members of MUFON with the rank of field investigator and above. Under MUFON's current structure, MUFON is a 501©3 non-profit corporation with 12 members—the 12 members of the Board. These individuals appoint themselves and no one in MUFON has any say about who is on the Board or what policies they pursue. There is no accountability of the Board to the 2800 Members of MUFON. Accordingly, Petition Item 1 calls for a new corporate document and structure in which individuals throughout MUFON would be eligible to run for the Board, and Members of MUFON with the rank of field investigator and up could vote for each person running. As for the current members of the MUFON Board, they would be free to run for election along with everyone else. Petition Item 2 - Calls for the ID to cease arbitrary personnel practices and instead develop and use due process in all personnel matters. "Due process" means procedures which are fair, thorough and transparent. Here is the letter Elaine Douglass sent the ID when she was fired: Dear Cliff— Let's see if I understand this. The accused is not informed of what the charges are against her, she is not allowed to confront her accusers, she is not questioned as part of the investigation, she is not allowed to know what evidence was presented against her, she is not permitted to defend herself, and in the end she is Convicted! But she's not told what she's been convicted of. Did I miss something? Elaine Douglass This letter captures what it is like when there is no "due process." This practice must be stopped! It has created a climate of fear and intimidation throughout MUFON in which people are afraid even to ask questions about MUFON policy for fear they will be fired. Petition Item 3 - Without going into detail, we know of instances where "Benefactors"—persons who contributed $1,000 to MUFON and were given Lifetime memberships—were stripped that status. The granting of a Lifetime membership is a contract which MUFON may not unilaterally renounce. Petition Item 4 - Calls on the MUFON Board to do high level fund raising. High level fund raising is the prime activity of the board of any well-run non-profit. As far as we can see, the MUFON Board engages in no high level fund raising and we don't know why. We know of three offers to help with fund raising which were turned down. Item 4 also reads ". . .with the stipulation that all sources of funding to MUFON embrace MUFON's mission of publication and transparency of all data collected by the Members of MUFON." This refers to the well-known recent debacle in which the MUFON Board sold MUFON's data and the services of our investigators to another organization that definitely did not respect MUFON's mission. The Committee to Reform MUFON knows there are many things wrong with MUFON not captured in the Petition. For example, it has come to our attention MUFON headquarters is now reaching down into the state chapters—without the knowledge or approval of the SDs—and is investigating individuals, and appointing and firing individuals to positions in the states. Will all the Members of MUFON sign the Petition? Probably not. However, not everyone in MUFON has to sign it for the Petition to have a major impact. Our question to you is: Will YOU sign the Petition? Please do! Return the Petition with your name and address by replying to this email address in the next three days. THEREFORE, we the undersigned Members of MUFON call upon the 12 Members of the Board of Directors of MUFON to terminate the current legal corporate structure of MUFON (in which the Board is self-appointing) and replace the corporate structure with a new legal incorporation in which the Members of the Board of Directors will be chosen by vote of the Members of MUFON having the rank of Field Investigator and above. 2. WHEREAS the arbitrary dismissal of MUFON officers by the International Director is harmful to MUFON in many ways, THEREFORE we the undersigned Members of MUFON call upon the International Director to institute, publish and follow due process procedures in connection with the dismissal of any officer of MUFON having the rank of Field Investigator and above. 3. WHEREAS Life Membership in exchange for a financial contribution (Benefactor status) represents a contract between MUFON and the Member, THEREFORE the contract shall not be broken except in extremis. 4. WHEREAS MUFON cannot fulfill its mission without adequate funding, THEREFORE we the undersigned Members of MUFON call upon the Board of Directors of MUFON to pursue a program of professional-level fund raising to obtain sources of funding among foundations, wealthy individuals and the like, with the stipulation that all sources of funding to MUFON embrace MUFON's mission of publication and transparency of all data collected by the Members of MUFON. NAME ADDRESS NOTE: There have been several problems at MUFON for the past few years, including the BAASS controversy and James Carrion's resignation as International Director, the lack of new young members, the same speakers and experts at the symposiums, the infighting among UFO groups and, frankly, questions as to where MUFON's loyalty actually lies. | SCADA: A Clear and Present Danger Posted: 02 Feb 2011 03:20 PM PST  Currently, the main vulnerabilities of SCADA systems come from the fact that we've taken something of very limited control and have now connected it to an internet that is accessible by other people. The bottom line is that more people have access to the SCADA system than was ever intended. In order to make the SCADA systems cost-effective in the future, there are no longer special purpose operating systems built for them. Standard vendor operating systems, with additional vulnerabilities that are well known, are now in place. So now we have systems that are well understood by enemies of the state, connected to the internet, but still providing a rather critical function in the current infrastructure. There were protections around SCADA systems for a long time. Now holes have been poked in those walls to give us more cost effective access to those SCADA systems, with all of the vulnerabilities that entails. Over the past decade, software vulnerabilities have been detected and reported privately and through the media. There were several main misconceptions that generally deemed the system as secure, giving the public a false sense of safety. The first misconception was that the SCADA system resides on a physically separate, stand-alone network. These systems were originally built before and often separate from other corporate networks. As a result, IT personnel typically operated on the assumption that these systems cannot be accessed through corporate networks or from remote access points. Unfortunately, this belief is, for the most part, fallacious. The second misconception was that connections between SCADA systems and other corporate networks are protected by strong access controls. Many of the interconnections between corporate networks and SCADA systems require the integration of systems with different communications standards. The result is often an infrastructure that is engineered to move data successfully between two unique systems. Due to the complexity of integrating disparate systems, network engineers often fail to address the added burden of accounting for security risks. The third misconception was that SCADA systems require specialized knowledge, making them difficult for network intruders to access and control. This misconception assumes that all attackers of a SCADA system lack the ability to access information about their design and implementation. These assumptions are inappropriate given the changing nature of utility system vulnerabilities in an interconnected environment. Due to the fact that utility companies represent a key component of one of the nation's critical infrastructures, these companies are likely targets of coordinated attacks by "cyber-terrorists", as opposed to disorganized "hackers." Such attackers are highly motivated, well-funded, and may very well have "insider" knowledge. Further, a well-equipped group of adversaries focused on the goal of utility operations disruption is certain to use all available means to gain a detailed understanding of SCADA systems and their potential vulnerabilities. I recently received a correspondence from an individual (who I will refer to as 'RD') who is convinced that the government is attempting to suppress much of the SCADA vulnerabilities by quieting whistleblowers. The information offered may be pure speculation but there is a reason why RD has taken on this personal crusade…RD sincerely believes his brother was executed because of what he knew. The following is the letter from RD. I have edited some of the wording simply because of RD's understandable passion: "I believe that the murder of John P. Wheeler III was a planned surgical hit. Wheeler was a Former Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, Member of Council on Foreign Relations. At the time of his death, he was working as a consultant for the Mitre Corporation. Mitre performs Information Technology work for several Federal Agencies, including Defense and Homeland Security departments." "Wheeler was very concerned that the Pentagon had not taken the threat of a cyber attack seriously, and he was trying to convince certain individuals of these threats. He stated that the United States is definitely not prepared to defend itself against a well orchestrated cyber network attack, and the results could be beyond devastating! I would be willing to go even further and say, that Wheeler was trying to get the attention of the right people, to understand how these cyber attacks could be carried out, by using the SCADA Network Operating Systems. SCATA is used nationwide to link network data control to all public utility, law enforcement, emergency, transportation and distribution services and technologies. This includes all National Defense, Military and Space Program Operations." "The average American has no idea how deep this goes, and has no idea of the damage that can be done by a Cyber SCADA attack. Neighbor will be killing neighbor in order to get the last of their stock piled food and water. The movie 'Road Warrior' is exactly what the outcome would be like! They will shutdown all utility services and cripple gas, food, and water supply distribution…then imbed their super virus into the software. No one could possibly get everything back to full operational condition again, for at least six months to a year...."  The body of John P. Wheeler III, a decorated US Army officer, was found dumped in a Delaware landfill on New Years Eve day, a few days after he expressed concern that the nation wasn't adequately prepared for cyber warfare, according to news reports following the bizarre whodunit. Events surrounding the murder of Wheeler, who most recently worked part-time for defense contractor Mitre Corporation on cyber defense topics, read like a Tom Clancy novel. The 66-year-old worked for three Republican administrations, was special assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, served in the office of the Secretary of Defense, and penned a manual on the effectiveness of biological and chemical weapons, which urged US forces to show restraint. The day after Christmas, (five days before his body was found as it was being dumped from a trash truck into the Cherry Island Landfill in Wilmington) Wheeler sent longtime friend Richard Radez an email expressing concern that the US wasn't sufficiently prepared for "cyber warfare," according to The Associated Press. "This was something that had preoccupied him over the last couple of years," Radez told the news organization. Wheeler's focus on computer warfare, and his ties to Mitre, have already attracted conspiracy theories involving the military industrial complex, but there are plenty of other intriguing details that don't immediately fit into such a plot. Among them are revelations that Wheeler was seen on December 29 and 30 in a "confused and disoriented" state in downtown Wilmington. During that last appearance, which occurred some 14 hours before his body was discovered, he was wandering inside an office building a few blocks from an attorney who was handling a contentious lawsuit Wheeler filed to stop neighbors from building a home near his. He refused help from several people who approached him. A day earlier, he approached a parking garage attendant "wearing a black suit with no tie and only one shoe," according to the AP report. He carried the missing shoe in his hand and wore no overcoat, despite the frigid temperature. He told the attendant he had been robbed of his briefcase and said repeatedly he wasn't drunk. To further the intrigue, Delaware police have reportedly found evidence that Wheeler may have been involved in an attempted arson on the same neighbors he was suing. The attempted arson on December 28 came after someone tossed several smoke bombs used for rodent control into the neighbors' house, scorching the floors. What's more, the AP has reported that yellow police evidence tape was seen surrounding two wooden chairs in Wheeler's kitchen, where several wooden floorboards were missing, even though Delaware police have said the victim's home is not considered a crime scene. A neighbor, according to Examiner.com, said Wheeler's television blared continuously in the days preceding his death. Those details, combined with the fact that someone went to considerable effort to hide Wheeler's body in a trash dumpster in nearby Newark, Delaware, would suggest the homicide wasn't a random mugging. - uncompiled.com / theregister.co.uk THE LETTER CONTINUES... "My brother worked as a water treatment plant operator and he discovered secret plans by our (shadow) government, to launch this cyber attack. Water treatment plants across the country all have a SCADA building, and certain individuals are trained by our own government to operate the systems within these SCADA buildings. Unfortunately most of these individuals are dedicated radical Islamic Muslims! Just like the individuals trained by our own government, for the 911 attacks and pre-set demolition charges. When the planes were crashing into the World Trade Center Buildings, the SCADA operators locked down the building, at the Water Department and held a party. The following morning, when they finally unlocked the doors and were heading out to go home, they were shouting "death to Americans" and "you stupid Americans brought this upon yourselves". My brother was there and he was shocked at this activity, especially since his supervisors and the superintendent never even took disciplinary action against these people." "My brother worked for the water department for 28 years, and he died just three months after his retirement. He was suffering from an illness that no doctor could (or would) diagnose. He became deathly ill about five months before his retirement date. Six weeks before his death, he asked me to promise him, that I would seek justice for his death, should he die from his mystery illness. He said that he knew for a fact, someone was trying to kill him. He wasn't sure if they were using viral (bacterial), chemical (poisons), or possible biological (germ warfare grade) agents to accomplish their slow kill assassination mission. I will not get into the details of his autopsies, other than to say the Medical Examiner working for the same public officials as the water department, declared his death was from natural causes. The private pathologist we hired for a second autopsy stated that the cause of his death was "inconclusive"!" "There is no doubt in my mind and all of the other family members, that my brother was murdered, just like John P. Wheeler III. All of my brother's close friends are certain of his murder as well. My brother was trying to warn people about the impending cyber attack being planned by the SCADA operators. I am guessing that is exactly the same mission Mr. Wheeler was working on. We have to find a way to make their SCADA cyber attack plans be known to the public." "I desperately need to get the word out there. My life is being threatened on a regular basis and I am now being stalked by the government for my attempts to research my brother's findings. They are killing the highest profile people in this matter, and I am slowly becoming one myself. I have gone through six different cell phones in order to keep them from tapping my conversations. She had just seen the wispy image of a person - who had hissed into her ear: "Can you hear me?" It was the first of hundreds of ghost sightings that would plague the young girl and lead her to believe she may have psychic powers. Incredibly, Fae's younger brother, Ashley, has now started reporting similar eerie sightings - despite not knowing of Fae's. Mum Lynn has come to accept her kids have supernatural powers and that, just like the movie The Sixth Sense, her children can "see dead people". To Lynn, this is anything but a special gift - she sees it as a curse she would love to break. The 39-year-old, from Waltham Cross, Herts, says: "It feels like someone is bullying my children and I can't do anything about it. "It would have been easier to deal with if they had an illness. At least I would know where to go for treatment. "Fae has got used to it and now she enjoys having this ability - but Ashley hates it." Last week we revealed one in five Brits have seen or felt the presence of a ghost - and that 53 per cent believe in psychic ability. The research coincides with Matt Damon's new film, Hereafter, about a reluctant medium. Fae, now 13, and Ashley, eight, can relate to that. Stay-at-home mum Lynn says: "The first sign was when Fae started primary school. "She used to tell me one of her friends was purple or the teacher was red. So one day I told her, 'No darling that boy isn't purple'. She said, 'Mummy I mean the colour around him'." Now they both believe Fae was recognising auras, the glow said to radiate around a person. Ghostly sightings started when Fae turned ten, and appeared nearly every day. Once Fae reported her bed being shaken by a frustrated female ghost. Another time she said she could feel the energy of an old woman against her back while showering. She even says that at times she can feel ghosts playing with her hair. A figure who regularly appears is "the druggy man", who has droopy eyes and slumps next to Fae in her room. I did start off thinking it might be attention-seeking, but you know your own children. She was shy and not a story teller." In her skinny jeans and patent Dr Martens, petite Fae today seems at ease with her powers but her huge blue eyes still betray her fear during one of the most terrifying incidents. She says: "I had walked out of my bedroom and there was a mirror at the other end of the hall. In my reflection I saw a person's head on my shoulder. It was red. I was so scared. But now I understand that it is my grandad and that he is my spirit guide, who is protecting me." Fae matter-of-factly goes on to relate how she encounters these unexpected visitors. She says: "It's not like seeing something solid like a chair, it's like a glimpse of the person. "Mostly I can sense something or feel the energy there and the picture and details come into my head. Like their name can pop into my head or how they died. "If I close my eyes I see their picture building up. It happens so quickly. I have all this information in a couple of seconds. "I used to be really scared, I wouldn't like the dark and I wouldn't like looking in the mirror in case I saw something." The double blow came when Ashley began to see ghosts too. He refuses to discuss the idea that he may be psychic. Lynn says: "We had been careful to keep everything that was going on with Fae from Ashley. I didn't want him to be frightened. Then, about a year ago, he refused to go into our conservatory and wouldn't go to the toilet alone. "I asked him what the matter was and he told me, 'There's a head following me around'. I asked Ashley what the matter was and he said: there's a head following me around "My blood went cold. How do you tell a seven-year-old that some people can see dead people?" Lynn's husband, David, 45, is clearly concerned and supportive yet, like Ashley, prefers not to discuss the issue. But supernatural powers may run in the family. Both David's dad and Lynn's gran believed they saw spirits. Lynn says: "Fae has tried to tell Ashley it's OK and happens to her but he doesn't believe her. "She's intrigued by it now but he hates it and is terrified." Through talking to other mediums, Fae has learned to cope with the sightings but Ashley is very much in denial. Instead, a friend who does distant healing - called Theta Healing - has focused on Ashley, asking that he doesn't see anything frightening. Lynn believes this has reduced the sightings but says he still has what he calls "bad thoughts". Fae, who has learned to channel her ability into learning Reiki healing, says: "I can close down my chakras - points in the body from the head to the feet. "You do it by thinking of those points as lightbulbs and you shut them off so you are closed to the spirits. I can also ask them to go away and I can imagine a white light around me to protect myself. "When it first started I was seeing spirits every day but now it isn't as often." Fae adds: "I have only told one friend at school, she was fine about it and accepts it. "But I wouldn't tell anyone else because I think they would tease me. I would be the witch girl." Lynn and Fae plan to write a book together on their experiences. They have also launched Facebook group Children With Spirit. Lynn says: "One of my issues is that there's no real help out there for people like us. "Talking to other psychic children has really helped Fae, so hopefully it can help others too." ********** Another Weeping Madonna wcpo - READING, Ohio - Some are calling it a miracle. There is a statue of the Virgin Mary that appears to be crying tears inside a Reading shop. In the back of the small shop is a statue of Mother Mary. It looks like she is weeping and there are two teardrops on her face. The statue of Mother Mary crying inside Our Lady Queen of Reading religious lending library is bringing tears to some visitors' eyes. "I believe it's true. They were there. I saw them. It's true. I would imagine it's a miracle," said one visitor from Amberley Village. WCPO cameras were not allowed inside, but visitors snapped photos of the Virgin Mary. There are two tear drops on her face, one rests on her chin, the other on her cheek. There is another statue of Jesus sitting at the top of the stairs with tears falling from its eyes. "I heard about it on the radio and I didn't think much of it. Being here at work and we saw the lineup of people. Out of curiosity I went over and looked and its unbelievable. It's forming. The tear is there. It does not look like it's water or anything. It's real weird, very weird," said Gayle Walker from Reading. Most want to believe what they see. "Well I have faith that it is. We can't always be sure, but I prayed to her and I feel better about it and I'm glad I came," said one visitor from Reading. There are more visitors arriving every day as word spreads about the crying statues. Visitors who know the owner tells 9 News the owner wanted to keep it a secret for fear the statues would stop crying. Others say they believe the tears are a sign of hope. They believe it should be shared with the community. "You hear about it in other countries and then it's here in Reading of all places. It is a miracle. I think something will come of it, hopefully, something good," Walker said. While at the shop, several stories about the tears were shared with 9 News. Some say they started to form about a week ago when a visionary visited the library. Someone else said they started after a rosary, which belonged to Reverend James Willig, who died nearly 10 years ago, was placed in her hands. Whatever is causing the tears, it's bringing smiles to many peoples' faces. ********** Pig farms breeding drug-resistant diseases infozine - A new university study may make you think twice about the occasional fly that lands on the Sunday dinner table. Research by scientists at Kansas State University and North Carolina State University found a high prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the intestines of house flies and German cockroaches as well as in pig feces – all from the same farms. For the study, which was conducted on two commercial swine operations in Kansas and North Carolina, scientists isolated the common gut bacteria Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium from the digestive tract of house flies, and the feces of German cockroaches and pigs. "Our data showed that enterococci were common from all three sources and frequently carried antibiotic resistance genes," said K-State associate professor of entomology, Ludek Zurek. "The bacteria were found to be frequently resistant to tetracycline, erythromycin, streptomycin, and kanamycin, which are common antibiotics used to treat infections in humans." Other collaborators on the study were K-State postdoctoral research associates Aqeel Ahmad and Anuradha Ghosh, and North Carolina State University distinguished professor, Coby Schal. The research was published in the BioMed Central journal BMC Microbiology on Jan. 26, 2011. "Because antibiotics are widely used as growth promoters in U.S. swine operations, the digestive tract bacteria in pigs are often exposed to selective pressure and many become resistant to antibiotics," Zurek said. "Insects such as house flies and German cockroaches can move freely between animal waste and food and may play a significant role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria within and between animal production farms and residential settings." The study showed that cockroaches and house flies shared some of the same enterococcal clones that were detected in the swine manure, indicating that insects acquired enterococci from swine manure. Zurek said that this study was the first analysis of antibiotic resistance and virulence of enterococci associated with insect pests in swine farms. "Since we found such a good match in enterococci, it is possible these insects acquire other bacteria from swine feces with even greater public health significance and could disseminate them to the surrounding environment. This research will enhance our understanding of the role insects play in the ecology of antibiotic resistant and virulent bacteria and in public health. He said that further studies in this area will depend on available funding. **********    Scariest Fish in the World green-buzz - You may have been under the impression that, where freshwater fish are concerned, the one you would least like to encounter would be the Piranha, famous flesh-eater from the Amazon river, but you might need to think again. Recently, another kind of fish, so savage that it makes the terrifying t piranha seem tame, was recently caught in an English river, for the first time ever, setting off alarm bells. Commonly found in South-east Asian waters, this vicious predator fish, called the giant snakehead, is repotedly completely unfussy when it comes to food, with a shark-like attitude to eating any and everything it encounters, even to humans, if the rumors are to be believed, which say that people have died from getting too close to these fish in the water. A wide mouth, full of flesh-tearing, fearsome teeth is the first thing you notice about this monster, which can grow to three feet in length, weighing up to fifty pounds, though the one caught in the UK was smaller. These amazing fish can also survive for up to four days out of water, because in normal habitats they may need to "crawl" between available pools. Snakeheads are thought, perhaps justifiably, to be the ultimate in invasive species, rapidly going through all other wildlife in the river, so if breeding were to start in any UK river, the results would be catastrophic, which is why this danger fish is among those species that cannot be imported. The one caught had almost certainly been ex-aquarium, illegally released. Do not, for one second think that the case is being over-stated here. Your everyday fish is nothing like the snakehead, females having attacked, and sometimes killed humans that came too close to the juvenile fish the females were guarding. An infestation of these horrors, near any bodies of water in close proximity, is dreadful environmentally, because their ability to travel overland means that they will completely empty on pool of prey fish, then move on. An unexpected invasion of snakeheads in the USA was combated with real zeal, even to the extent that sharpshooters were positioned round affected pools, shooting the fish dead on catching sight of them. Lakes had to be poisoned, at the cost of killing many other fish, just to prevent the spread of snakeheads, in the process, though wether or not they were wiped out remains debatable. The only bright spot, and possible cause for optimism here is that the fresh water habitats of the UK and USA are almost certainly too cold for snakeheads, which prefer warmer waters, to survive in the long term. Remember though, what that character played by Richard Attenborough, in the film Jurassic Park, was heard to say. Life will always find a way. Take note, and be warned.  |

A new video of the UFO over Jerusalem surfaced tonight from a tourist that was filming while on a late night tour of Jerusalem on January 28th 2011. The video is not the clearest because it was dark out, but it catches the same glowing orb that was caught on tape from across town. Another statement of the event: "Witnesses noticed the large oval shaped UFO suspended on the night skyline.
