Big Cat Mystery in Central Savannah River Area

Posted: 28 Sep 2010 03:26 PM PDT

chronicle - Georgia wildlife officials say we don't have panthers - and people who claim to have seen one continue to insist otherwise.

It's a perennial stalemate that has lingered for decades, with dozens of sightings reported annually across Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

Without evidence, however, the reports are routinely dismissed as mistaken identity linked to hound dogs, bobcats, large feral cats or small deer.

The lone exception was a 140-pound panther killed during a black powder hunt in 2008 near West Point Lake in Troup County. Genetic tests confirmed it was not - as biologists first said - an escaped pet.

It was a Florida panther and a member of the last subspecies of cougar still surviving in the eastern U.S., with fewer than 120 animals.

Almost two years later, authorities still have no explanation of how the cat ended up in Georgia - 600 miles from its known habitat.

Such mysteries bring up the obvious question of whether there could be other panthers - or something other than panthers that could explain the persistent sightings.

The most recent ones I'm aware of occurred just this past month.

One was a woman's call to Columbia County authorities claiming to have seen a panther at the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in the Campania community.

The other was this actual photo - taken by a hunter's trail camera - in Screven County.

The image, snapped about an hour before daylight, shows a dark cat meandering through swamp grass. Its tail is not visible, but it has an unmistakable flat, feline face.

Could it be a panther? Perhaps not. It doesn't appear large enough to be a mature cat from a species that routinely grows to be more than seven feet long.

Other opinions are that it could be a bobcat in low light, or perhaps a mature feral cat that has somehow interbred with bobcats.

The seemingly pointed ears on the cat in the photo might lend credence to that argument, since panthers have more rounded ears. But the angle of the photo could also have made rounded ears seem more pointed.

One common denominator among many reported "panther" sightings is a description of a cat much smaller than a typical panther, leading some theorists to surmise the creatures could be jaguarundi, a panther-like wildcat native to Mexico and Central America that has been found in Texas and Florida.

The jaguarundi is known to inhabit swamps and remote river basins and is so elusive that relatively little is known about the species. It is also commonly found with dark brown or black fur, which could help explain the large percentage of sightings in which the cat was a "black" panther.

Wildlife biologists continue to say it is unlikely that panthers, jaguarundis or other such predators are living in our midst undetected. And people who have seen them will continue to disagree.

Our friend Sam from New Zealand has come up with few new sightings. He states: These two pictures showed 7 invisible UFO light balls arranged in a straight line formation. One was captured on year 2007, with a shutter speed of 1/800 of a second. one on 27 Sept 2010 with a shutter speed of 1/1000 of a second. Looks like those UFO light balls are not less than 30 cm in diameter.

MUFON CMS - PA Turnpike near Valley Forge, PA - 9/26/2010 - (unedited): I was driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike around 10:15pm just a few minutes away from the Conshohocken Exit When I noticed an unusual craft smoothly and quietly gliding across the sky from the front the front left of my car. It appeared to be either black or a very dark grey color and in the shape of an elongated diamond. The longer tips were pointing towards the front and rear of the craft. At the rear under belly of the craft were three large lights in the formation of a triangle and at the front tip of the craft were smaller lights that seemed scattered. The smaller lights were hard to make out from the angle and short amount of time I had to observe the object. I watched the craft gracefully fly across the turnpike in front of me and then head to the right and back of my car as I continued driving. One thing I noticed before I lost sight of the UFO was that the back right light ( one of the three in the triangle formation) was abruptly shut off, leaving only two lights at the rear. This was right before the craft appeared to descend in its flight and that's when I lost view ( and almost crashed my car) Oh and all the lights appeared to be white in color. When I first noticed the craft I thought it must be some new type of military airplane or something but the odd triangular shape of the lights and the fact that none of them were blinking or red tipped me off that this was unusual. Also I have never seen a flying object that had no wings or propellers, like I said, the shorter tips of the diamond shape were pointing to the sides. Also it is hard to explain but the way it flew was eerie, smooth, graceful, seemingly silent and quick, the flying pattern had a slight curve to the right but mostly it just headed straight on. I pulled out my cellphone to take a pic but didn't get much of a shot, instead of fiddling with my phone to try again I decided to abort the effort and just stare at it for as long as possible, I would have pulled over if it were safe but there were plenty of cars on the road zipping around me ( I had slowed down and drove a bit recklessly) I would be very surprised if none of the other cars on the road noticed this peculiar flying object. I can't really explain how I felt, part of me was excited but I wasn't scared ( which is how I always thought I would feel if I saw a UFO) I know it was definitely a UFO but I'm not so sure it was extraterrestrial. I have never seen any craft look or fly the way this one did but at the same time something felt "human" I mean it was so OBVIOUS and didn't look like it was trying to be stealth at all... anyway that's it, the craft looked like it was flying lower and lower and was lost behind a bunch of trees and the hills to the right of my car. I got to my exit and stared at the sky for the rest of the drive home hoping to catch another glimpse.

MUFON CMS - 9/23/2010 - Egg shaped, multi-colored object near Canal Winchester, Ohio on Rt. 33  - (unedited): At exactly 7:32PM on September 23, 2010, I was traveling northbound on Rt. 33 between Carrol and Canal Winchester (One tenth of a mile before the Hill/Dilely Road Exit), when I spotted the object. The object caught my eye out of the 10'Oclock position (NNW-North Northwest). It was in plain sight maneuvering in an unfixed pattern, about 200' off the ground. It appeared to be located about 500' west of the Hill/Diley Rd exit bridge, hovering over an empty field and partially the road.
The object itself was unlike anything I have ever seen. It was sort of egg shaped, without wings or other definition. However the luminosity of the object was the most prominent characteristic. When I first sighted it, the object was an extremely bright (mega-led bright) blue. After a few seconds, it gradually faded into an equally bright red color. It was NOT the standard blue and red lights of FAA regulations common on all commercial/private aircraft. These lights were extremely bright and the source of the colored light encompassed the ENTIRE object.
I estimate the object's size as being relatively small at about less than 4 feet in diameter. It never changed shape, morphed into individual lights nor did it have any dimensional shape. It hovered in a gliding pattern, lowering its altitude, however I never seen it land. I had direct visual contact with object for about 10-12 seconds max. I actually pulled the car onto the highway berm and came to a 5-10MPH crawl, in order to soak in what I was seeing. Other traffic (10-15 additional vehicles) going in both North and South directions on Rt. 33, did not seem to be affected by the object (No one else stopped of slowed down).
The weather was partly cloudy, dry and the lighting was dusk.
I might also add that 10 minutes prior to the sighting, I noticed an unusual amount of increased outgoing air-traffic originating from Rickenbacker Air Base, located about 6 miles to the West from the sighting location. I saw several (5-7) separate large cargo aircraft depart the air base within a 5 minute span. This occurred 10 minutes or so before I was even in the area of the sighting.
In closing, I have never seen anything unusual in the sky before. I am a fairly avid astronomy buff and am constantly looking into the night sky. This was certainly an event/object I can't seem to get a grasp on. I'm not sure if I really believe that extraterrestrial aliens are visiting the earth. I lean towards "No" due to the immense distances between even the closest stars, however after seeing this object, I am close to at LEAST believing that the object I saw is beyond what mankind can/has produced.

tucsoncitzen - On the night of September 23rd, residents of Tucson saw strange lights in the sky. Various eyewitnesses reported 3-5 lights in a line, while others reported an object with a triangular shape.

Reports of malfunctions started at the same time as the object flew overhead in a northwesterly path. Reports of interrupted satellite television transmissions were reported as the object flew over homes. Traffic lights were seen flickering at an intersection near Star Pass Blvd as the object passed overhead. A report of an elevator malfunction was reported.

All just a coincidence? Maybe.

One eyewitness tried to document the object on video camera, only to realize that his batteries were dead.

Calls began to flood the newsroom about the strange sight, which witnesses insist was not a plane. This is a city that sees planes and helicopters so many times a day that the residents are immune to them, barring the noise they make. The Tucson airspace is shared between the busy Tucson International Airport and the active Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Law enforcement takes to the air, as well as medical personnel on life saving flights to and from local hospitals. Tucson residents are all too familiar with the sight of planes, helicopters and military flares.

News anchor Dan Marries was quick to begin collecting eyewitness accounts. He used Twitter to spread the news, as well as his Facebook page and the KOLD Facebook page, to document real-time eyewitness accounts. Calls about the object kept pouring in to the newsroom at the same time. KOLD staffers began to call everyone from Davis-Monthan to the Department of Public Safety to get answers, which no one seemed to have.

At the same time, Tucsonan Sheila Martin was immune to the news of the UFO, as she sat outside of her apartment to document any objects in the night sky. This is a long-time nightly hobby for Martin, who knows what planes, helicopters and flares look like, as well.

By 10:00 pm, Dan Marries and meteorologist "Chief" Chuck George discussed the incident, which Chief Chuck said was not a weather anomaly.

With the exception of Sheila Martin's video, no other videos have publicly surfaced at this time to document the object witnessed by so many. Martin's video of the night sky indicates an object, which many eyewitnesses say does not match what they saw. However, some of the witnesses looked beyond the object. They noticed an orange light or two in the background that do seem to match.

It should be noted that Martin did not submit the video to local news agencies. Instead, the link was taken from her YouTube page, as the time of her video was shot matched the time of the event.

A photo circulating around the UFO community as the UFO should be discounted. While checking on the original photo on a local woman's Facebook page, it was noted in the comment section that the photo uploaded on September 23rd was a shot of the moon. Only later was there a light-hearted note in the comment section that the photo was taken on the same night of the Tucson UFO sighting. Somehow, the photo began to circulate as a photo of the UFO.

Ironically, the event occurred a week after posting my helpful article about what to do if you see a UFO. My readership is largely non-Tucson based.

With a lack of submitted photo and video evidence at this time, there are only the eyewitness accounts to go on. There are many full eyewitness accounts, which have been pieced together on my computer to create a detailed time line of events.

I have, for now, pieced together a brief synopsis of the evening's events, as new accounts are still coming in:

The object was spotted early in the evening, with the earliest eyewitness account coming from the Green Valley area. If others saw it south of there, they haven't come forward yet. It was seen in southwest Tucson with most of the reports coming from that region (Pima College West, Starr Pass, the intersection of Ajo and Kinney), before it continued north toward rural Marana. Accounts varied between either a line of 3 to 8 lights, or triangular-shaped craft, depending on the vantage point and proximity. By the time it reached rural Marana, there were reports of military planes in the vicinity of the lights, as if the military were involved an exercise, or perhaps they were investigating the lights. The military has not verified these accounts and also denied flights in the area. The air traffic eventually cleared from the area with two military helicopters circling the lights in the sky.

Perhaps a military exercise is all that it was.

It should be noted, at this point, that not one eyewitness has made the correlation between the object and extraterrestrials. A UFO is a flying object that is viewed by a witness or witnesses, who cannot positively identify the object as something like a plane, kite, flare, planet, helicopter, etc.

Witnesses stated that it was not identifiable as any of those things. If it was one of those things, no one has come forward yet with proof that it was one of those things. It is a UFO until it can be identified as something concrete.

It's probably one of those things that will remain a mystery.

Fortean / Oddball News: 'Potentially Hazardous' Asteroid, Saving Trauma Patients and War Robots

'Potentially Hazardous' Asteroid Spotted Due to Pass Earth in One Month

dailymail - Astronomers have spotted a 'potentially hazardous' asteroid less than one month before it is due to pass close to Earth.

The object, given the name '2010 ST3', is 150 metres in diameter and will pass within four million miles of Earth in mid-October.

It was discovered using the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) PS1 telescope in images taken on September 16th, when it was about 20 million miles away.

It is the first 'potentially hazardous object' (PHO) to be discovered by the Pan-STARRS survey, using a new telescope designed to scan the skies for dangerous asteroids.

'Although this particular object won't hit Earth in the immediate future, its discovery shows that Pan-STARRS is now the most sensitive system dedicated to discovering potentially dangerous asteroids,' said Robert Jedicke, a University of Hawaii member of the PS1 Scientific Consortium, who is working on the asteroid data from the telescope.

'This object was discovered when it was too far away to be detected by other asteroid surveys,' Jedicke noted.

Most of the largest PHOs have already been catalogued, but scientists suspect that there are many more under a mile across that have not yet been discovered.

These could cause devastation on a regional scale if they ever hit our planet. Such impacts are estimated to occur once every few thousand years.

Timothy Spahr, director of the Minor Planet Center (MPC), said, 'I congratulate the Pan-STARRS project on this discovery.

'It is proof that the PS1 telescope, with its Gigapixel Camera and its sophisticated computerized system for detecting moving objects, is capable of finding potentially dangerous objects that no one else has found.'

Pan-STARRS expects to discover tens of thousands of new asteroids every year with sufficient precision to accurately calculate their orbits around the sun.

Any sizable object that looks like it may come close to Earth within the next 50 years or so will be labeled 'potentially hazardous' and carefully monitored.

NASA experts believe that, given several years warning, it should be possible to organize a space mission to deflect any asteroid that is discovered to be on a collision course with Earth.

PS1 and its bigger brother, PS4, which will be operational later in this decade, are expected to discover a million or more asteroids in total.

They will also spot more distant targets such as variable stars, supernovas, and mysterious bursts from galaxies across more than half the universe. PS1 became fully operational in June 2010.

Pumping Ice-Cold Fluid Into Patients' Veins Could Bring Them 'Back From the Dead'

dailymail - Victims of violent crime and road accidents could be 'brought back from the dead' with a pioneering new treatment.

Surgeons often only have minutes to save patients who have sustained gunshot, knife or car crash wounds.

But scientists said doctors could gain extra time to operate by pumping ice-cold fluid into a patient's veins.

The huge drop in body temperature slows the dying process and stops the brain from shutting down before the heart stops beating.

Research leader Dr Hasan Alam, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, claims the procedure could save 90 per cent of patients with fatal wounds.

He said: 'By cooling them rapidly in this fashion, we can convert that almost-certain death into almost-certain survival.

'We're talking about 90 per cent-plus survival with normal cognitive function, normal brain activity, normal organ function. It's challenging but it's doable.'

Dr Alam has successfully performed his 'suspended animation' technique in operations on hundreds of pigs and now hopes to begin tests on humans.

The surgery involves pumping a chilled fluid called a 'plasma expander', which contains nutrients and chemicals to preserve organs, into a patient's blood vessels.

Under normal circumstances, humans suffer brain damage if they are deprived of oxygen for five minutes and death follows 15 minutes later.

However, cooling the body slows metabolic activity, thereby reducing the need for oxygen.

Once surgery to repair a wound is complete, the patient is gradually warmed up by infusing their own blood back into their bodies.

Dr Kevin Fong, consultant anaesthetist at University College London Hospital, believes the discovery could "revolutionise" surgery.

He said: 'Death is not a moment but a process which we might be able to stretch out, giving doctors a chance to intervene.

'Hypothermia is helping us re-draw the line between life and death, and it has the potential to revolutionise everything from trauma surgery to resuscitation medicine.'

Pray Vigil at Possessed M25 Junction

getsurrey - Junction nine of the M25 may have been hexed, the pastor of an Evangelical church has claimed.

Gerald Coates, of the Pioneer Engage Church in Epsom Road, Leatherhead, believes someone "motivated by dark forces" could have been recording messages of evil onto cassette tapes and then strewing the reel around areas they wish to curse.

Mr Coates, who lives in Effingham, said he had found large amounts of tape reels in the area, including around the roundabouts that lead onto junction 9 of the motorway.

He believes this could be the explanation for what he described as a "wholly disproportionate" number of crashes on the Leatherhead section of the M25, as well as the number of people who have taken their lives by jumping from footbridges.

Mr Coates and Tom Winter, a 17-year-old member of his church who lives with him, organised a vigil on the Kingston Road bridge over the carriageway on Saturday (September 18) to pray for the safety of those driving below.

The pastor said 25 to 30 people attended, and he was hopeful the event would have an effect on the accident and fatality rates.

"We are going to be monitoring the number of crashes carefully now," he said.

"I do believe we will see far fewer incidents, but if the trend is not reversed then we will return for another vigil in mid-December."

Mr Coates said the reaction to Saturday's prayers had been better than he expected.

"Appropriately enough, there had been a major crash at junction 11 and the traffic was backed all the way up to junction 9," he added.

"We prayed silently and aloud, in groups and alone and standing and on our knees.

"People were waving and shouting and beeping their horns, the whole atmosphere was great."

"Black apparition"

Mr Coates said he was not certain there was a hex on the road but that he could not think of another explanation for the collision rates.

"When I moved here eight years ago it quickly became clear to me that there is a wholly disproportionate number of crashes between junctions 10 and 9 and 9 and 8 compared to other areas," he added.

"I cannot think of any natural reason why that would be, because the human failures of not checking a mirror or a blindspot or whatever happen everywhere rather than being concentrated in one small area.

"One man said he had seen this black apparition standing over the M25 and it was that which caused a crash.

"I think people could be cursing it. One thing that people who are involved in the occult do, these people who are motivated by dark forces, is make recording on cassette tapes and then pull them out and put them around the area they have cursed.

"I have been finding huge amounts of this stuff in the area, including around the roundabout that leads onto the motorway."

The M25 around junctions 8, 9 and 10 has seen a number of serious and fatal crashes over the past few years.

In July, four people were left with serious injuries after the airport bus they were travelling in overturned near Redhill.

In February last year, 21-year-old Shivali Dave died after a crash between junctions 8 and 9, and last November one man was injured when five cars collided in the same area.

One of the worst incidents in the history of the M25 was in May 2007, when six people were killed after a van carrying a group of friends on their way home from a stag weekend crashed into the back of a lorry.

A number of people have also taken their lives by jumping from bridges over the motorway.

Grieving widow Janet Catsaras plunged to her death two days before Christmas in 2008, and in 2005 a 52-year-old man from Ashtead died after falling from the Green Lane Bridge.

SKYNET? Robots Changing the Face of War

abc.net.au - A United States military analyst says robots are driving a fundamental shift in the way the Afghanistan war is conducted.

Many countries are increasingly relying on robotic technology, such as unmanned drones and remote-controlled buggies, to further their war efforts.

Military analyst Peter Singer says the US has over 7,000 remote-controlled robots in the air and over 12,000 on the ground.

He says the US uses remote-controlled drones to launch missile strikes from the air as well as remote-controlled buggies to detect roadside bombs.

"There are 44 other nations in the world, including Australia, which use unmanned systems," he said.

"The key with all these unmanned systems is not just that there's not a person inside, it's also that they're growing more and more intelligent; more and more autonomous."

Mr Singer says recent advances in technology are redefining the role of humans on the battlefield.

"You may have a Reaper drone, which is the replacement for the Predator drone, which can - as opposed to the Predator - take off and land on its own," he said.

"That plane, with no pilot inside of it, is over Afghanistan. The pilot, though, is geographically located - dislocated, so to speak - outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, at an airforce base there."

Mr Singer says there is a fundamental change in the experience of going to war.

"I remember speaking with a commander of a Predator squadron out in Nevada, he said: 'I wake up in the morning, I drive into work, for 12 hours I'm going to war; I'm putting missiles on enemy targets, then I get back in the car and I drive home. And 20 minutes after being at war, I'm sitting at the dinner table with my kids, talking about their school work'," he said.

Mr Singer says while war is changing for individuals, it is also changing for nations as a whole.

He says the US has carried out more than five times the number of unmanned strikes on Pakistan than it has manned strikes during the Kosovo war.

"We don't call it the 'Pakistan war'. [But] it's five times the size," he said.

"For some reason we've redefined 'war'.

"I think it's because of the role of this technology and how it changes our notion of what it means for a nation to go to war."

Technology out of control

Mr Singer says while remote-controlled drones are saving soldiers' lives, people still need to figure out where accountability falls when robots suffer an "oops moment" on the battlefield.

"An example of an oops moment that's already happened was a couple of years ago in South Africa. An automated anti-aircraft cannon was supposed to fire up into the sky for a training exercise. It had a, quote, 'software glitch'," he said.

"We've all had software glitches before. [But] in this case, it actually caused the automated cannon to level and fire in a circle. It killed nine soldiers before it ran out of ammunition."

Mr Singer says people will need to adjust to the presence of robots on the battlefield.

He says soldiers used to share a sense of danger with those they were targeting, but now that is not necessarily the case.

"There was a duality of those who were putting themselves at risk and those who they were putting at risk. That's changing with this technology," he said.

"Every revolution, whether we're talking about the introduction of gunpowder, or the introduction of computers or the machinegun, or now robotics - every revolution has two sides to it.

"Every revolution has both positive ripple effects and negative ripple effects, and really, it's up to us to figure out how to navigate between them."

On Monday, at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., a distinguished panel of former U.S. Air Force officers involved in UFO incidents at nuclear missile sites near Malmstrom, F.E. Warren, and Walker AFBs, as well as the nuclear weapons depot at RAF Bentwaters held a press conference in which they have asked the US government to clear its stand on UFO phenomena.

I have posted a full video as well as several shorter versions of the press conference.

NOTE: my father was with the 509th Bomber Wing in the early 1950's...which was part of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at that time. Some of the events related to me by him and others are compelling. I personally have had the opportunity to talk to other former USAF personnel in reference to UFOs and non-terrestrial beings that were witnessed by them. Frankly, the anecdotal evidence on these videos parallels much of the information that I have heard and read over the years...Lon
