| Recent UFO Encounter Reports: Roswell Connection, Triangles and Odd Flashes Posted: 05 Oct 2010 01:17 PM PDT    **********   I was sitting down on the sofa/couch watching some cartoons, since there was no UFO documentaries on Discovery Science, etc. The tv started freezing, so my first thought as a Ufologist, was "maybe theres a UFO out there" and then I started to notice really strange noises which changed for some reason. Ive seen several UFOs and this was the first non-silent one. It sounded like a cross between a plane, a helicopter, a TIE Fighter from Star Wars, and buzz... and with the combined volume of all these, as it was much louder than either one. Already on my way to the door, I unlocked it and walked out to see what appeared to be just a green glow with a white flashing light. I watched it hover in one direction until it suddenly turned and circled over my house. When it went over my roof, I went back through the house and out to my back garden, where I could see it up close - It was long, black, and either triangular or cigar shaped. with a green light on each side, a smaller dim red light on the back, and a flashing, larger white light in the middle. I didn't expect it to, but it went around in circles above my house several times for about 25 minutes. It appeared to be flying in a straight line until I walked out onto the middle of the road and started to record it... It was as if it knew I was watching... ********** MUFON CMS - Angel Fire, New Mexico - 8/26/2010 - (unedited): I live about a mile north of the end of the airport runway in Angel Fire, NM. Angel Fire is in a valley at an elevation of 8,400 ft surrounded by mountains of roughly 10,000 ft to the east and 13,300 feet to the west. Just before 9 pm on August 26 I heard and felt a window-rattling noise, which caused me to go outside to investigate. Once outside, I looked up and saw a large helicopter (with bright exterior lights and dim interior lights, noise, spinning rotors) traveling slowly in a northward direction a few hundred feet above Hwy 64. Immediately in front of the helicopter was an object approximately four times as long as the helicopter. The object was bullet-shaped on both ends and cylindrical between the bullet-shaped ends. The object had no lights, no wings, no markings or windows that I could see, and made no sound. It blocked out the stars behind it. I was able to discern its shape by the shape of the area of blocked-out stars and by the moonlight which illuminated its underside. The night was clear, with no clouds and easily-distinguishable stars. The moon (just a couple of days past full) was rising over the mountains to the east at the time I saw the object. It appeared to me that the object was being "escorted" by the helicopter behind it. Both the helicopter and the object moved at a steady, but slow, pace. The unknown object traveled steadily with no wobble or other movement. I watched the helicopter and the unknown object for about three minutes until they disappeared over the horizon. (The helicopter lights were visible for about three minutes Ð the object in front of the helicopter became unseeable after about a minute and a half.) My feelings? Incredulity! Curiosity! Why was a large UFO flying so low and why was a large helicopter 'assisting' it? ********** MUFON CMS - Daly City, California - March 2005 - (unedited): My boyfriend at the time and I were living in a friend's tiny fifth-wheel trailer on a hilltop in Daly City, California. It was directly in the flight path of San Francisco International Airport; we were watching "Cops" on TV, and Phil had passed out after dinner and a few beers. I remember watching this particular episode with a growing feeling of dread. A SWAT team was preparing to bust a major drug dealer, and I was suddenly overcome with a terrible premonition that I was watching a destiny that might well be ours if I didn't act to prevent it soon. I had no idea why, or what, or even when--so I did what I always do when I get scared and don't know what to do--I prayed, saying the Lord's prayer, pleading with Him to save us, to give us a reason to persevere, motivation to stay together and try to make things work. I remember practically begging Jesus to return for us. I worked on the flightline for six years while in the Air Force, so I am quite familiar with the sounds planes make when they fly overhead, and the Doppler effect on sound as it moves. And that's why I found it a bit strange when an aircraft flew directly overhead--and stopped, hovering over the trailer, shaking the thing like a giant rattling maracas. It was very loud, and sounded very powerful, because even the loudest of airplanes didn't come close, and in any event nothing that powerful can hover This lasted for roughly ten minutes, then the sound and rattling faded. Minutes later, the exact same thing happened, and repeated twice more for a total of four times. A few months later, I learned that I was pregnant, and had conceived in that time frame. Why is this incident remarkable? I wouldn't have even given it a second thought, except for Phil's history, and mine. His uncle was working on Roswell AFB the day that ship crashed, and what he saw he refused to tell anyone until a few years ago when hr did an interview for a UFO documentary that aired on the science channel in 2007. And when I was three, my dad took me to a clearing in the woods next to our home on Millstream Road in Woodstock, New York, in the spring or summer of 1971. I was terrified of the big gray "hippopotamus", but my dad wanted me to not be scared, to believe it would be ok. Also, Phil was born in Roswell; his birth certificate states November 27th, 1964. He was in the army, and before we met for the first time in 2003, I believe we'd never met. Our paths, however, had crossed many times. And my son, in an ultrasound picture of his fou month fetus, he is sitting cross legged with wide eyes looking right into the camera, and i kid you not looks for all the world like one of the small, large-eyed aliens like we often see in sketches, as if he wants to know who's peering in at him. **********   ntnews - The accidental photograph on today's front page of a UFO over a popular tourist destination occurred only hours before a bright light buzzed the crowd at the Katherine Show. Victorian tourist Adam Rewuk did not realise he captured the image of the flying saucer over Katherine Gorge until he looked back over his photos after the trip. "My Dad used to be a big UFO believer, so when I saw the picture, I thought of him," he said. "I took the photo around lunch time, but I saw nothing in the sky. I didn't realise it was there until I saw the photo." Mr Rewuk said the image was definitely not that of a plane or a mark on the lens of the camera. "If I zoom in on the picture, it almost looks like a diamond shape with a bubble on the bottom," he said. Mr Rewuk said the photo was taken only a few hours before a UFO was spotted at the nearby town show. The NT News reported on July 17 that a bright light had travelled slowly across the sky about 6.20pm. The UFO spooked hundreds of people at the showgrounds as the sun was starting to go down. Mel Auty, from Camira, Queensland, said the UFO looked at first like a plane. "But it was more like a falling star, just not falling. "And it wasn't dark enough for stars to be out. "It was going across the sky for maybe five seconds, before it disappeared." Vicki Mulholland, of Borroloola, said she was watching the last campdraft events at the show when something caught her eye. "I looked up and something went across the sky," she said. "It kept going and going and suddenly it was gone just as if someone had switched if off." | Murder Victim Attends His Own Funeral Posted: 05 Oct 2010 09:46 AM PDT  The murder trial following the reported killing of 22-year-old shebeen owner Siphamandla Hlatshwayo – who was allegedly stabbed to death at another tavern in Nompumelelo in 2008 – was postponed to next year for the claims to be investigated. Murmurs and gasps were heard in the East London Regional Court last week when the first State witness testified that he had seen Hlatshwayo just a week after the alleged murder. Accused Bongekile Nqwiliso, 22, was arrested in 2008 for allegedly stabbing Hlatshwayo and his friend Sonwabo Walter Mpisane – who survived the attack – during a heated argument at Aaron's Tavern. Hlatshwayo was reported to have died on the scene, while Mpisane sustained minor stab wounds. Nqwiliso was released on warning and has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Mpisane, called as the first State witness, said he was "shocked" when Hlatshwayo turned up at his own funeral in August 2008 – about a week after his death. He said Hlatshwayo was wearing the same clothing as the night he had died. After rushing to Hlatshwayo's sister's aid – who allegedly fainted when she saw her brother – Mpisane said he chased after Hlatshwayo, who fled the scene. Taking the stand in the afternoon, tavern owner Aaron Simandla confirmed Mpisane's version of events. He said he also saw a man "who looked very much … exactly like Hlatshwayo." He said he also attempted to "catch" Hlatshwayo but that he "vanished". Chaos then erupted and community members wanted to burn the coffin with the body inside. However, family members called off the funeral. Instead, they had the body cremated about a week later, the court heard. Yesterday a family friend of Hlatshwayo's, who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation, said she had witnessed the commotion at the funeral, but denied the victim had turned up to see his own burial. "There was screaming … someone fainted … people were running around yelling that they had seen Siphamandla, but I never saw him. "I was very close to Siphamandla … If he was there why didn't I see him? He would have appeared to me." The postmortem report will be presented to the court next year on January 20.  |

But this spooky spectre took one tourist by surprise when it appeared in her photograph. The grainy grey image appears to show a woman in historical dress walking along New College Lane in Oxford. Sue Tomlinson, 50, was visiting the city with her sister-in-law Tina Bennett, 52, from Shropshire earlier this month. They decided to brave Bill Spectre's Ghost Tour to discover more about the city's past and the lamppost caught Mrs Tomlinson's eye. She said: "I thought it looked so beautiful glowing with All Soul's College in the background I had to take a photo. "When I first saw it I thought it looked strange and wanted to get home and put it on the computer so I could see it bigger. "I don't know if it's someone walking past – I didn't notice because I was concentrating on taking the photo – or if it's something wrong with my camera, but all my other pictures are fine. "I don't believe in ghosts – if someone else had taken the photo I would say someone had fixed it. "It looks like someone carrying a bag or a basket and wearing a dress from olden times." Bill 'Spectre' Ritchie said: "I can guarantee I had nothing to do with this photo, she sent it to me out of the blue in an email. "Interestingly, it was on that same lane, New College Lane, that a couple of years ago a Russian girl sent a similar slightly blurry photo. "An Australian woman who claimed to be sensitive to the spirit world was on the ghost trail not long ago, and claimed that New College Lane was the most haunted place she had ever been. "Another local woman said that at 2am last Christmas morning, she was walking along Holywell Street, which runs parallel to New College Lane, when she heard the sound of horses hooves echoing along the silent streets of New College Lane. "You can imagine her reaction when I told her the lane was indeed haunted by the ghosts of Royalist Cavalrymen who would assemble there before battle." Oxford's top five haunted spots are said to be: * The headless spectre of John Crocker haunts the site of his tomb in the chapel at Exeter College. The Elizabethan scholar appears in a yellow jacket, gown and breeches. * In 1645, Archbishop Laud was beheaded for his belief in the church against Parliament and was buried beneath the altar in the chapel of St John's College. The ghost has apparently been seen bowling its head towards the feet of anyone unlucky enough to meet it. * Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by Bishop Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester. The original site included the13th century St John's Hospital whose buildings extended east as far as the river. Isis magazine reported on June 5, 1968, that very Sunday morning, a student who was walking across the college lawn saw with astonishment a black-clad figure moving from the cloisters towards him, without a head. He said that the figure glided rather than walked in complete silence. * The landlord of The Priory in Grenoble Road has had his fair share of encounters and believes the building, which began life as a dormitory for Benedictine nuns is haunted by their spirits. He has heard the sound of children running up and down his landing and often hears a woman in high heels walking past the pub in the middle of the night. * Empress Matilda allegedly haunts the stairs of Oxford Castle in her white gown. She began living at the castle in 1141 but it was besieged by her cousin King Stephen and she was forced to flee in the night, in white to disguise herself against the snow. ********** Firefighters Watch as Home Burns to the Ground wpsdlocal6 - Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won't respond, then watches it burn. That's exactly what happened to a local family tonight. A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground. The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning. Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay. The mayor said if homeowners don't pay, they're out of luck. This fire went on for hours because garden hoses just wouldn't put it out. It wasn't until that fire spread to a neighbor's property, that anyone would respond. Turns out, the neighbor had paid the fee. "I thought they'd come out and put it out, even if you hadn't paid your $75, but I was wrong," said Gene Cranick. Because of that, not much is left of Cranick's house. They called 911 several times, and initially the South Fulton Fire Department would not come. The Cranicks told 9-1-1 they would pay firefighters, whatever the cost, to stop the fire before it spread to their house. "When I called I told them that. My grandson had already called there and he thought that when I got here I could get something done, I couldn't," Paulette Cranick. It was only when a neighbor's field caught fire, a neighbor who had paid the county fire service fee, that the department responded. Gene Cranick asked the fire chief to make an exception and save his home, the chief wouldn't. We asked him why. He wouldn't talk to us and called police to have us escorted off the property. Police never came but firefighters quickly left the scene. Meanwhile, the Cranick home continued to burn. We asked the mayor of South Fulton if the chief could have made an exception. "Anybody that's not in the city of South Fulton, it's a service we offer, either they accept it or they don't," Mayor David Crocker said. Friends and neighbors said it's a cruel and dangerous city policy but the Cranicks don't blame the firefighters themselves. They blame the people in charge. "They're doing their job," Paulette Cranick said of the firefighters. "They're doing what they are told to do. It's not their fault." The gem, classified by the Gemological Institute of America as "fancy intense pink" has been assessed as type IIa – meaning it is in the top two per cent of the world's diamonds. It was sold by celebrity jeweller Harry Winston some 60 years ago and has been in a private collection ever since. It is now on show in Hong Kong and will tour the world before being sold by Sotheby's auction house in Geneva. It is estimated to fetch between £17 million and £24 million – almost one million pounds per carat. The current world record for the most expensive diamond sold at auction per carat is the Star of Josephine, a blue diamond weighing 7.03 carats which sold in May 2009 at Sotheby's for six million pounds – £850,000 per carat. David Bennett, of Sotheby's, said: "During my 35-year career I have had the opportunity to examine many magnificent and rare gemstones. "But, put simply, this stone is one of the most desirable diamonds I have ever seen. "What makes it so immensely rare is the combination of its exceptional colour and purity with the classic emerald-cut – a style of cutting normally associated with white diamonds and one that is so highly sought-after when found in rare colours such as pink and blue. "The stone's character is further enhanced by the gently rounded corners which impart a unique softness and charm to this truly outstanding gemstone." The coloured diamonds are described by experts as the most sought-after jewels around the world, with blues, pinks and greens proving most popular. Once sold, the stone is expected to rocket into the list of the top ten most expensive diamonds in the world. This list ranges from the Allnatt Diamond at number ten, worth a comparatively paltry £1.9 million, to the priceless Koh-I-Noor, one of the British crown jewels. The famous Hope Diamond is currently classed at number four in the list, with a £220 million price tag, Fellow pink diamond, the Steinmetz Pink, is currently at number six, valued at £16 million. **********  GPS Directs Driver to Death in Spain's Largest Reservoir guardian - It is perhaps the secret fear of all users of GPS systems: what if the device gets it wrong and leads you into danger? The Spanish Red Cross said today this was exactly what happened to a 37-year-old man who died on Saturday night after driving his car into a reservoir near the western town of Capilla. "It seems the GPS system pointed them on to an old road that ends in the reservoir, and that in the dark they were unable to brake in time, with the car taking just a couple of minutes to sink," the Red Cross said in a statement. The victim and a single passenger were driving home towards the southern city of Seville after working at a street fair when the Peugeot 306 ploughed straight into the waters of La Serena reservoir. Although both men managed to get out of the car, only one made it to the shore. Red Cross divers found the body of the unnamed driver at the bottom of the reservoir on Sunday morning. The passenger was treated for bruising and light injuries. Pictures of the scene show the old road running on a slight downhill slope straight into the reservoir, which is the biggest in the country. There was no explanation of why the GPS still showed the road as usable. La Serena reservoir, which stores water from the Zújar river, was built in 1989. NOTE: Michael Scott?  |

But this picture overlooks a whole class of materials: crystals one atom or molecule thick, essentially two-dimensional planes of atoms shaved from conventional crystals. These are turning out to be wonder materials. Take graphene, the single layers of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice that my colleagues and I first isolated in 2004. Graphene is stronger and stiffer than diamond, yet can be stretched by a quarter of its length, like rubber. Its surface area is the largest known for its weight. Despite graphene's thinness it is impermeable to gases or liquids. It conducts heat and electricity better than copper, and can be made into transistors which are faster than those made from silicon. It makes possible experiments with high-speed quantum particles that researchers at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, can only dream of. With such an array of properties, there are high hopes for what we might accomplish with graphene. Optimists say we are entering a carbon age. Even pessimists argue only that the impact will be somewhat less. ********** Graphene Finally Goes Big sciencemag - Graphene: single-atom–thick sheets of carbon prized for its off-the-charts ability to conduct electrons and for being all but transparent. Those qualities make graphene a tantalizing alternative for use as a transparent conductor, the sort now found in everything from computer displays and flat panel TVs to ATM touch screens and solar cells. But the material has been tough to manufacture in anything larger than flakes a few centimeters across. Now researchers have managed to create rectangular sheets of graphene 76 centimeters in the diagonal direction and even use them to create a working touch-screen display. That scientists can make any devices at all from graphene is impressive. The carbon sheets were isolated only in 2004. Since then, researchers have struggled to produce large swaths of the ultrathin membrane. Last year, a group led by University of Texas, Austin, chemist Rodney Ruoff took a key step, growing graphene squares one centimeter on a side atop flexible copper foils. Now researchers led by Jong-Hyun Ahn and Byung Hee Hong of Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea report online today in Nature Nanotechnology that they have essentially scaled up the approach taken by the Texas team to make graphene sheets large enough for full-screen displays. The Korean-led researchers first used a technique called chemical vapor deposition to grow graphene atop large sheets of copper foil. They then added a thin adhesive polymer layer atop the graphene and dissolved away the copper backing. Peeling off the adhesive polymer gave them a single graphene sheet. To make their film stronger, they repeated the initial steps, layering four sheets of graphene atop one another. The researchers then chemically treated their graphene sandwich with nitric acid to improve its electrical conductivity. The film allowed 90% of light to pass through and had an electrical resistance lower than that of the standard transparent conductor made from indium tin oxide (ITO). The team members also revealed that graphene outperformed ITO when they incorporated it into a real touch-screen display. ITO is used in touch screens, such as those used to record signatures when customers make a credit-card purchase. But it's brittle. Ahn and colleagues showed that their graphene-based touch screen could handle twice as much strain as conventional ITO-based devices. "It's potentially a really important step along the way for massive scale up" of graphene technology, Ruoff says of the new work. But he cautions that beating out ITO won't be easy. Electronics companies have been working for years to replace ITO with transparent conductors made from films of carbon nanotubes. But they've been undone by small defects in the films that create dead pixels in displays, something the eye can readily see. Still, the indium in ITO is extremely expensive, which ought to give companies every incentive to give graphene a shot at replacing it, says Ruoff.
